World Cup
Intercontinental Play-off

Mexico were arguably the better of the two teams, but the United States will surely be the happier of the sides at the end of an evening during which they spent the majority of their time on the back foot. They defended diligently to keep at bay a determined Mexico side, and they're able to leave the Azteca with a well-earned point as a result.
90' + 3' Lozano twists and turns on the right-hand edge of the United States penalty area and does well to beat Beasley before winning the hosts a late corner. It's sent short to Herrera, but the referee blows his whistle for full-time before the midfielder can whip a cross into the box.
G. Zusi
C. Pulisic
90' + 2' Graham Zusi has come on to replace Pulisic in a late change for the United States.
90' The crowd are urging Mexico forward as the home side desperately try to find a late winner. They're throwing everything they've got at the United States, but it doesn't seem to be working.
88' Big opportunity for Pulisic! The Borussia Dortmund man, who has been uncharacteristically quiet this evening, picks up the ball in a pocket of space just outside of the box and quickly shoots, but his curling effort swerves the wrong side of the post and behind for a goal-kick.
87' More slightly careless play by the United States midfielders presents Pineda with a great chance to hit the target from the edge of the penalty area. His shot is poor, however, and Guzan is able to watch it sail comfortably over the top of the crossbar.
85' Sloppy play by Mexico gifts the ball to the United States, but they can't do anything with it and the home side push forward once again. Gallardo gets himself into a good position out wide and then tries to unleash a cross, but he's closed down well and has to settle for a corner.
83' Bradley charges into Pineda and brings the substitute drashing to the ground, resulting in another free-kick for Mexico in a promising position 30 yards away from goal. This time it's Vela who shoots, but his effort is wild and fails to hit the target.
81' Mexico are continuing to enjoy the bulk of possession inside the United States half of the pitch, but they're struggling to do much with it. The visitors have defended well this evening, and they remain on course for what would be a well-earned point.
J. Altidore
B. Wood
79' The United States have made an attacking alteration as they try to find a way back in front, with Wood making way for Jozy Altidore.
78' Big chance for Aquino! Reyes whips a dangerous cross into the box from the right wing that the United States defence aren't able to deal with fully. It deflects over to Aquino, who is all alone at the far post, but he can't make decent contact with the ball and sends it high over the top of the crossbar with a first-time shot.
O. Pineda
J. dos Santos
77' Mexico have made their third and final change, with Orbelin Pineda coming on to replace Jonathan Dos Santos.
76' Hernandez breaks through the United States back line and manages to latch on to a chipped pass forward, but he's flagged offside as soon as he fires a quick strike just past the near post.
75' Vital block by Cameron! Lozano fires a dangerous low cross into the penalty area and towards Hernandez in front of goal, but Cameron is at the near post to poke the ball behind at the vital moment.
74' What a strike by Bradley! A bouncing ball finds Bradley in the centre of the pitch, and the midfielder quickly shoots. His effort is brilliantly hit and flies past the outstretched fingertips of Ochoa, but the ball ends up smashing off the post before it can find the back of the net.
72' Mexico are continuing to impress whenever pushing forward, and they're still causing plenty of problems for their visitors. The United States have been on the back foot for most of the second half, which has severely restricted the time spent in and around the Mexico penalty area.
70' Hector Herrera hits the crossbar! Vela is bundled over by Bradley as he quickly cuts inside from the left wing, resulting in a free-kick for Mexico in a promising position. Herrera steps up and unleashes a rocket of a shot, but it smashes off the woodwork after beating Guzan.
68' After a period on the back foot, the United States are able to push forward on a decent attack. Bradley spots a run forward from Yedlin and tries to pick out the wing-back with a lofted pass into the box, but it's slightly overhit and sails just past his outstretched leg.
66' Mexico move the ball around nicely before Lozano tries to dance his way into the United States penalty area from the right wing, but he's closed down by a group of white shirts on his way and can't make it into the box before being dispossessed.
D. Nagbe
P. Arriola
64' The United States have made their first alteration of the evening, with Darlington Nagbe coming on to replace Arriola.
63' Dos Santos twists and turns on the right-hand side of the United States penalty area before eventually spinning and unleashing a cross, but it's overhit by the number six and sails safely behind for a goal-kick.
61' Arriola goes close! Acosta makes a lovely run down the right wing before setting up Arriola with a clever cross towards the six-yard box, but, under pressure, the forward can't make decent contact with the ball and sees his shot deflected the wrong side of the post.
60' Pulisic, who hasn't been able to find much joy going forward today, skips into the left-hand side of the Mexico penalty area and wins the United States a corner. It's sent short before the winger whips a cross over to Gonzalez, but it's slightly behind the centre-back and he can't control it fully.
58' Hernandez makes a clever run into the United States box as he manages to latch on to a great through-ball from Aquino, but his first touch lets him down and he's quickly dispossessed by Cameron as a result.
P. Arriola
Yellow Card
56' Arriola lashes out at Aquino as the substitute tries to break forward through the middle of the pitch, and his late challenge earns him a yellow card.
55' Slightly sloppy play by Mexico allows Yedlin to break forward on a quick counter-attack, and he then does well to win his side a free-kick in a promising position over on the right flank. Acosta lifts a cross into the box and towards a group of whit shirts, but it's underhit and fails to trouble the home side.
J. Aquino
M. Fabián
53' Fabian still seems to be suffering slightly from the injury picked up in the first half, and he's forced to make way for Javier Aquino.
52' Lozano makes a clever run into the left-hand side of the United States penalty area as he skips past Yedlin and towards a looping cross, but, despite his best efforts, he's unable to make decent contact with the ball and can't keep it in play.
50' Vela cuts inside from the right wing before lifting a clever pass over to Gallardo on the left flank. The full-back then cuts towards the box before trying to tee up Hernandez, but his pass is sent behind the striker and can only find Bradley, who then thumps the ball away from danger.
48' More good play by Gallardo out wide results in the full-back earning an early corner for the hosts. It's whipped into the penalty area and towards the six-yard box, where Salcedo's diving effort is volleyed comfortably wide of the goal.
47' Gallardo quickly puts Yedlin under pressure as he darts down the left wing and into a promising position. He then whips a clever cross into the mdidle of the box, but Hernandez can't make decent contact with it and the United States can hold on.
46' We're underway once again!
The two teams are making their way back out on to the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.
The scoreline remains level as the two sides head into the half-time break, and Mexico will certainly be the happiest. They started slowly but did well to get back into the game, with a lovely strike by Vela managing to find the bottom right-hand corner of the net. Since then, they've predominately been on the front foot, although the United States have looked bright when countering quickly.
45' Mexico patiently work the ball around as they try to carve out one last chance before half-time, but Yedlin does well to dispossess Gallardo as the substitute tries to dart down the left flank and denies him a way through.
D. Yedlin
Yellow Card
44' Yedlin has been flying into a few challenges over the last five or so minutes, and he's finally shown the first yellow card of the game after bringing down Hirving Lozano from behind.
43' Hernandez goes down inside the box, but nothing is given! The striker sprints into the United States penalty area and towards the near post before going down under a tackle from Cameron, but there didn't seem to be much contact at all and the referee tells him to get to his feet.
42' Gallardo is left in acres of space out on the left flank once again and is able to whip another cross into the penalty area, but this time it's Gonzalez who does well to clear the danger at the near post.
41' Gallardo comfortably skips past Yedlin deep down the left wing before cutting towards the box and unleashing a low cross, but it fails to pick out a team-mate in front of goal and is instead blasted away by Bradley.
39' Fabian is back on the pitch after it initially looked as if his game was over. He's immediately called into action as he tries to stop a quick United States attack, but, luckily for the home side, Yedlin's off-balance shot from the edge of the penalty area sails several yards over the top of the crossbar.
38' Big chance for Gonzalez! Beasley limps off the pitch to receive medical treatment and the game gets underway once again. Arriola quickly curls a lovely cross into the Mexico box and towards Gonzalez, who rises high and meets the ball well but can't hit the target with his downward header.
36' Bradley whips a clever lofted pass over to the left wing, where it picks out Beasley in an advanced position. The wing-back meets it well before trying to cross, but he's clattered into by Reyes and becomes the latest player to pick up what could be a really worrying injury.
35' This doesn't look good for Fabian, who seems to be in real pain after tangling with Wood. He seemed to jerk his ankle nastily as he stretched for the ball, leaving him in a heap on the floor and in serious discomfort.
33' The ball pinballs around the United States penalty area dangerously after the visitors are unable to fully deal with a looping corner, but a towering header from Hernandez can't pick out a team-mate and is easily collected by Guzan.
J. Gallardo
O. Alanís
31' Mexico have made their first substitution of the game, and it looks to be a tactical one, with Oswaldo Alanis making way for Jesus Gallardo.
29' An attempted Mexico attacking move fails to result in a chance on goal and allows the United States to counter quickly once again, but this time Pulisic can't make it count and loses out to Diego Reyes on the edge of the penalty area.
27' It was a poor start to the game from Mexico, but they've done well to fight back and now find themselves on the front foot. They're causing plenty of problems for their opponents, particularly when Vela and Salcedo link up over on the right wing.
25' Hernandez twists and turns 25 yards away from goal as he tries to find a bit of space for himself, but he's unable to do so and is eventually tripped over by Cameron. The resulting free-kick is fired towards goal, but the shot is poor and sails high over the top of the crossbar.
C. Vela
23' GOAL! Mexico are back in the game! After dealing with the danger at the other end, the hosts counter quickly. Hernandez sprints through the middle of the pitch before setting up Vela, who cuts inside from the right flank and skips away from Beasley before beating Guzan from 20 yards out with an excellent strike.
J. Hernández
23' Hernandez did really well to evade a challenge on his way forward, with Mexico causing all sorts of problems for their opponents as they burst into the United States half of the pitch. The visitors really should have done a lot better there.
22' DeAndre Yedlin battles his way down the right wing before winning his side another corner. Once again it's worked short to Pulisic, whose cross into the box causes problems for the Mexico defence. However, the United States can't take full advantage of the lapse in concentration and the home side just about manage to hold on.
21' What a chance for Hernandez! A lovely series of Mexico passes ends with Carlos Vela, who then lifts a beautiful chip over the top of the United States back line. It finds Hernandez all alone in front of goal, but Guzan darts out and does wonderfully well to smother the striker's first-time effort and clear it behind for a corner.
19' DaMarcus Beasley is bundled over by Dos Santos over on the left flank, resulting in a free-kick for the United States in a promising position. A wonderful cross is curled into the middle of the penalty area and finds Omar Gonzalez, but the centre-back is flagged offside as soon as his glancing header sails a yard or two wide of the goal.
17' The United States look set up to hit Mexico on the counter, and that's exactly what they're doing. Kellyn Acosta does well to break up play before bursting forward and setting up Pulisic, but the Borussia Dortmund man is quickly closed down and can't do anything with the ball.
15' Jonathan Dos Santos almost equalises! Cameron flies into Marco Fabian and brings the midfielder crashing to the ground, resulting in a free-kick that's taken quickly. It's poked over to Dos Santos, who takes a touch quick touch and then fires a rocket of a shot that flies just wide of Brad Guzan's far post.
13' Vital block by Geoff Cameron! A looping cross is fired into the United States box and looks set to find Javier Hernandez in front of goal, but, just as it's about to, Cameron rises high to head the ball over the top of the crossbar and behind for a corner.
11' Mexico move the ball around nicely on the edge of the United States penalty area as they try to carve out a chance on goal, but they have to settle for a corner. The set-piece fails to pick out a green shirt, however, as Bradley is there to head the ball away from danger at the near post.
9' The corner is sent short before Arriola eventually whips a low cross into the penalty area and towards the near post, but, once again, Mexico are just about able to hold on thanks to last-ditch defending.
8' Mexico look rattled when in possession in the middle of the pitch, and once again they lose the ball too easily. Wood takes advantage of the error by breaking down the right flank, but he can't skip into the penalty area and has to settle for a corner.
M. Bradley
6' GOAL! What a strike by Michael Bradley! Once again, Mexico lose possession in a dangerous position in the middle of the pitch. Bradley immediately charges forward before spotting Guillermo Ochoa off his line, and he then beautifully beats the goalkeeper with a spectacular chip from 35 yards out. What a way to open the scoring!
5' An attempted Mexico attacking move breaks down, allowing the United States to fly forward quickly. Paul Arriola initially does well to charge through the middle of the pitch before trying to set up Wood, but his lofted pass is poor and fails to find the striker.
3' Wood now finds himself in the wars after being clattered into by a flailing arm from Carlos Salcedo. A rough and tumble start to the game has denied either side the chance to fully get going.
1' It hasn't taken long for the first bone-crunching tackle to be seen. The offender is Bobby Wood, who charges into Hector Moreno and brings the defender crashing to the ground with a late challenge out wide. The referee decides to just give him a talking to.
1' We're off! The United States get us underway, attacking from left to right.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
Meanwhile, United States boss Bruce Arena has made seven alterations to the team that featured in their last outing, with Tim Howard, John Brooks, Jorge Villafana, Darlington Nagbe, Fabian Johnson, Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey making way for Brad Guzan, Omar Gonzalez, Tim Ream, Kellyn Acosta, DaMarcus Beasley, Paul Arriola and Bobby Wood.
Juan Carlos Osorio has decided to make four changes to the Mexico side that started the win against Hondarus on Friday, with Hector Moreno, Marco Fabian, Hirving Lozano and Javier Hernandez coming into the starting line-up to replace Luis Reyes, Giovani Dos Santos, Jesus Corona and Raul Jimenez, respectively.
United States substitutes: Brooks, McCarty, Morris, Hedges, Nagbe, Besler, Zusi, Dempsey, Howard, Altidore, Rimando, Johnson.
United States XI (3-4-2-1): Guzan; Cameron, Gonzalez, Ream; Yedlin, Bradley, Acosta, Beasley; Arriola, Pulisic; Wood.
Mexico substitutes: Molina, Jimenez, Luis Reyes, Damm, Duenas, Pineda, Cota, Peralta, Giovani Dos Santos, Talavera, Aquino, Gallardo.
Mexico XI (4-4-2): Ochoa; Salcedo, Alanis, Diego Reyes, Moreno; Jonathan Dos Santos, Herrera, Fabian, Lozano; Vela, Hernandez.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this evening…
The United States followed up that defeat with a 4-0 chastening at the hands of Costa Rica, but since then they’ve performed far better as they desperately try to consolidate their place inside the top half of the table. Honduras and Trinidad and Tobago were both easily beaten either side of a 1-1 draw away to Panama, setting them up nicely for tonight’s huge clash.
However, they’ll be well aware that it was their opponents today who found the back of the net in a tense game at the MAPFRE Stadium. With the closely fought clash looking as if it was going to end in a 1-1 draw, veteran defender Rafael Marquez popped up with just one minute left to play and scored what would prove to be the winning goal. It was a result that would prove to be the beginning of the end for United States head coach Jurgen Klinsmann.
After suffering the disappointment of being held to a goalless draw by Panama back in November, Mexico went on to win all of their next three games to reassert their dominance at the top of the table. Honduras were the latest team to fall in a comfortable 3-0 victory on this very ground, and it’s now exactly seven months since they last conceded a goal in a competitive fixture.
At the halfway stage of the final round of qualifying, Mexico remain unbeaten and currently lead the way at the top of the group. Four wins from five games has left them five points clear of nearest challengers Costa Rica, with only fourth-place Panama managing to avoid losing against them so far. Another victory here today would send them nine points clear of the United States, all but confirming their place at next year’s World Cup.
Good evening and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s World Cup 2018 qualifier between Mexico and the United States at the Estadio Azteca.
