The Brazilians are back at home and host an unpredictable Thwihli Thwahla side keen to upset them

Mamelodi Sundowns’ Premier Soccer League unbeaten run comes under serious threat when they welcome Royal AM at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday.

Having played 13 league games so far in this campaign, Masandawana are yet to taste defeat, a run that has helped them open an eight-point gap at the top of the table.

But facing Royal AM could see them having that run stopped. Third-placed Theihli Thwahla have so far performed above expectations under their new franchise.

They have so far avoided defeat against the other two traditional giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

Beating Chiefs 4-1 at FNB Stadium in September and restricting Orlando Pirates 1-1, again away from home, could be the much-needed confidence booster for Royal AM as they arrive at Loftus Versfeld.

Squads & Team News

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango will miss this match as he is serving his last match of suspension.

After being red-carded against Sekhukhune United, the Ugandan missed the trip to Stellenbosch and will not be available again on Wednesday.

But there is enough cover in Kennedy Mweene and Reyad Pieterse.

Some good news in the Sundowns camp is the return of midfielder Mothobi Mvala from injury while Sphelele has recovered from illness.

Defender Ricardo Nascimento is also back together with Rushine De Reuck.

Masandawana co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi conceded that he was feeling the absence of Neo Maema when they visited Stellenbosch and the midfielder is a huge doubt for Wednesday’s game too.

Gift Motupa remains out nursing a muscular complication.

No Royal AM player is suspended for this match.

Veteran attacker Ndumiso Mabena and Given Mashinkinya hope to be given a run after not featuring in the last match against AmaZulu.

Match Preview

This will be the first time for Sundowns and Royal AM to meet since the latter acquired the Bloemfontein Celtic franchise and changed their name.

While the Brazilians always enjoyed dominance over Celtic, Royal AM appears to have a new lease of life and it is yet to be seen if they will give Sundowns a torrid afternoon.

Sundowns go into this match a bit worried after sharing the spoils in three of their last five games and in the process dropping six points.

This was after they recorded seven wins on the trot but now appear to have dropped in form a bit.

They host Royal AM who have been struggling to win at least two straight games of late and have managed two victories, as many draws and a defeat in their last five outings.

Nine points separate Sundowns and their opponents from KwaZulu-Natal.
