That's all from Anfield today, so thank you for joining us and goodbye!
While Southampton have a more realistic chance of returning to winning ways in home games versus Leicester and Brighton during the coming week, they will be concerned at the meek nature of their defeat on Merseyside. Their hosts, meanwhile, are in fine form ahead of Wednesday's local derby with Everton, having scored 10 times in winning their last three matches - without conceding a goal.
Only some slightly wasteful finishing and a second-half shift down in gears prevented dominant Liverpool from racking up a greater margin of victory at Southampton's expense today. Jurgen Klopp's side saved all their heavy metal hits for before the break, with Jota and Robertson to the fore on several occasions, while they strolled through the second period against an inept Saints side.
90' Cutting in menacingly from the flank, Salah unleashes a 20-yard strike at goal, but the ball spins wildly off target and comically ends up clipping the corner flag on the way out of play!
89' Stand-in skipper Milner is too eager to regain the ball in the Southampton box, and concedes a needless free-kick which halts Liverpool's attacking momentum.
K. Walker-Peters
R. Perraud
87' Perraud has had a tough time at both wing-back and full-back today, and he may be relieved to be brought off early, with Walker-Peters now on in his place.
86' A clever quick free-kick catches Liverpool off-guard, but Van Dijk eventually reacts to turn the ball behind for a corner to Southampton.
84' Salisu is well placed to block Liverpool's route to goal again, and this time Mane is denied at close range after jinking inside from a position out on the left.
82' Milner drags a low, long-range shot just wide of the left-hand post, as Liverpool continue to dominate without totally eviscerating their hapless opponents.
T. Minamino
Diogo Jota
81' There will be no hat-trick for Jota today, as the two-goal striker is substituted and Minamino replaces him for the last 10 minutes.
78' Oxlade-Chamberlain side-foots a shot from the centre of the box straight at McCarthy, who stands firm to complete a routine save. The Liverpool substitute would have expected to find the corner from such a good position.
76' GOOD BLOCK! Salah picks up a scent of goal on the right, but his curled attempt from the corner of the area is well blocked by Salisu's head in front of goal - with the ball then going out for a Liverpool corner.
74' Broja is penalised for pushing, as he contests an aerial battle with Van Dijk to win Salisu's long throw-in just inside Liverpool's box.
72' CLOSE! Another chance for the hat-trick eludes Jota, as only his studs can make contact with a characteristically low, whipped cross from Robertson on the left. McCarthy was beaten all ends up, but the ball flies high over the crossbar.
71' For the second time today, Mane overhits a return pass in an advanced position, and his tidy link-up with Milner on the left ends with the ball drifting over the goal line.
69' A rare foray down the left from Broja ends with the Southampton forward being summarily shut down, and after the ball is recycled to the right, the visitors' attack is entirely snuffed out.
67' Liverpool have now shifted into preservation mode, as they increasingly stroke the ball around in their own defensive third, largely unchallenged by a dispirited Saints side.
J. Milner
J. Henderson
66' With the hard work done, Henderson - who has impressed upon his return to the team today - comes off to be replaced by Milner in midfield.
64' Having had a difficult Premier League debut so far, Lyanco is lucky to avoid a booking, as he crudely brings down Jota in midfield.
62' Liverpool have now recorded 20 second half goals in the Premier League this season, nine more than Southampton have in total this term.
60' Not for the first time today, Fabinho calmly intervenes on the edge of the area to block out Perraud's speculative shot. However, nothing comes of the corner for Southampton.
A. Oxlade-Chamberlain
Thiago Alcântara
59' After another attractive goal, Thiago's shift is over, allowing Oxlade-Chamberlain to enjoy a 30-minute cameo against his former club.
56' Demonstrating their comfortable territorial advantage, Liverpool have had 13 shots from inside the area already, as even a Southampton reshuffle cannot stop them flooding forward.
54' DOUBLE MISS! Armstrong is twice denied when he perhaps should have scored on the break, as first Konate prostrates himself, then Alisson gets down to block a scruffy second effort.
T. Alexander-Arnold
52' A typically accurate Alexander-Arnold corner found Van Dijk in space to fire in Liverpool's fourth.
V. van Dijk
52' LIVERPOOL FOUR UP! From a right-sided corner, Van Dijk is incredibly unmarked on the brink of the box, and he fires in a low shot under McCarthy's body and into the back of the net. The home side are coasting towards a big win here: Liverpool 4-0 ahead!
50' CLOSE! Liverpool have their first corner of the second half, and a quickly taken set-piece eventually finds Mane on the edge of the box, but McCarthy leaps to his left to save Southampton.
48' The tempo of this second half so far has been below that of a sometimes frantic first period, but Salah gets the fans off their seats with a neat ball to Henderson, whose cross from the edge of the box is then blocked.
N. Redmond
J. Bednarek
46' One of the Saints' back three has been removed, as Bednarek is off and Redmond comes on.
N. Tella
C. Adams
46' As part of a switch to a 4-4-2, Adams is brought off by Southampton and Tella comes on for the second half.
46' We are back under way at Anfield, and Southampton have made a couple of changes at the break.
Southampton are on the path to a 14th defeat from 18 Premier League away games in 2021, having already conceded 46 goals in the process - including three so far today. Indeed, the South Coast side have lost more matches and conceded more on the road than any other top-flight club this year, so today's display should come as no significant surprise.
An utterly dominant display from Liverpool has been aided by Southampton's curiously accommodating set-up, which has seen them overrun in the wide areas and midfield. Nonetheless, the home side have been ruthless in converting their chances, with three goals from as many shots on target; a broken Saints side are merely considering damage limitation during the second half.
45' + 1' Soon after Salah overhits a throughball in a promising area, Jota is then off target with a prodded strike from just inside the box. Liverpool could have had even more before the break!
44' SHARP STOP! Alisson gets down quickly to palm away Armstrong's shot towards the bottom corner, following a Livramento cross from the right. Finally, the full-back gets a chance to show his attacking abilities after being pulled apart by Liverpool's flying forwards.
43' Mane does well to win a corner, but from the set-piece, Southampton speedily break, requiring Fabinho to intervene with a timely challenge on the halfway line.
41' Jota goes close to a hat-trick, as his right-footed shot from the left side of the area just misses to the right-hand side of McCarthy's goal.
39' Liverpool have scored three or more goals on eight separate occasions already this season, and could be set to extend their Premier League-leading goal tally still further today.
Thiago Alcântara
37' THREE FOR LIVERPOOL! The Reds are cruising here, as Thiago nonchalantly rolls the ball under his foot and then cracks an effort at goal from the edge of the box, which is heavily deflected past the hopeless McCarthy in Southampton's goal. Liverpool 3-0 Southampton!
36' A teasing Mane cross from the left finds Henderson's head, and the Liverpool captain nods on for Jota to shoot at goal, but Lyanco blocks well to prevent the hosts' third.
34' Armstrong clatters Konate on the halfway line, but only a free-kick is awarded to the home side.
Mohamed Salah
32' Composure and control allowed Salah to interlink with Henderson, then precisely play in Jota to convert Liverpool's second.
Diogo Jota
32' JOTA AT THE DOUBLE! Southampton are wide open once again, as Salah and Henderson combine brilliantly on the left to play in an unmarked Jota, who once again is in the right place at the right time to tap the ball home. Just after the half-hour mark, it's Liverpool 2-0 Southampton!
29' Cutting the ball back from the byline, Salah trickles the ball into Henderson's path for a shot at goal, but the midfielder's strike flies far off target from 20 yards.
27' Southampton have started to grow into the match as they continue to press on in their adventurous formation, but to little effect so far.
25' Illustrating their far sharper start to today's game, Liverpool have had nearly two-thirds of the possession so far, and have also bettered Southampton's passing accuracy stats by a full 20 per cent.
23' GOOD SAVE! A charging run down the left by Broja, stemming from some careless Liverpool play in their attacking third, ends in a fine save low down by Alisson. He narrowed the angle and made the chance considerably tougher, but Broja may regret that miss later on.
22' In a good position to shift the ball forward into dangerous territory, Thiago is clipped by Romeu, who concedes a free-kick. However, Liverpool then fail to make anything of the opportunity.
20' A promising break falters, as Mane's ball through to Robertson has too much pace and trundles out frustratingly for a goal kick to Southampton, who are merely hanging on here.
18' Since September 2013, Southampton are winless in their last seven away league games against Liverpool, losing their last four at Anfield by an aggregate score of 12-0.
16' Salah has a left-footed shot from the right side of the box blocked, following a pass from Liverpool's returning skipper Henderson.
14' A first spell of attacking pressure from Southampton is swiftly repelled by the intervention of Konate, after a pair of testing left-wing crosses by Perraud.
13' NO GOAL! After a quick review, the VAR affirms the referee's on-field decision, and Mane will have to wait longer for a goal against his former club.
12' Mane is narrowly denied by the offside flag, as he converts a free-kick from the left side of the area by Robertson. However, the VAR has been called upon to check.
J. Bednarek
Yellow Card
11' Another lunging challenge by a visiting player sees Bednarek go into the referee's notebook, as he apparently raked Mane's leg with his studs.
8' Salisu concedes a free-kick for tangling with Henderson in midfield, as Southampton desperately look to establish a foothold in this game.
6' Extending their record with today's early strike, Liverpool were the only team to have scored in all 12 of their Premier League games this season. The Reds have now found the net in each of their last 23 league games overall, netting at least twice in 18 of those - including each of the last nine.
4' CLOSE! The home side are in full flight without any need for a run-up! Mane is just off target with a headed effort from another Robertson cross, and the left-back is proving a constant menace on Liverpool's left flank.
A. Robertson
2' Already making his presence felt upon his return to the team, Robertson calmly cut the ball back to tee up Liverpool's opening goal.
Diogo Jota
2' AN EARLY LEAD FOR LIVERPOOL! After initially creating the opening with a seemingly endless run through the centre and a subsequent blocked shot, the ball is recycled on the left for Liverpool, and Robertson clips in a precise cross for Diogo Jota to score from close range. Already, it's 1-0 to Liverpool!
1' We are under way in Liverpool!
The players are out on the pitch at Anfield, to the familiar chorus of "You'll Never Walk Alone" from the home fans, with kick-off just moments away!
Meanwhile, Southampton opt for three changes from the team defeated by lowly Norwich last time out, with Romain Perraud and Armando Broja coming into the starting XI alongside centre-back Lyanco, who makes his first Premier League start for Saints since signing from Torino in the last transfer window. Broja will join Adam Armstrong - who has either scored or assisted a goal in each of his last three league appearances - and Scotland striker Che Adams up front.
Liverpool make several changes from the side which started against Porto in midweek, as Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho and Diogo Jota all come back into the first XI today. Captain and midfield lynchpin Jordan Henderson also joins Andrew Robertson in returning from injury, and the pair take their place in the line-up for the first time since before the international break. With Roberto Firmino sidelined once again, Diogo Jota starts up front for the hosts.
SUBS: Fraser Forster, Nathan Redmond, Ibrahima Diallo, Shane Long, Kyle Walker-Peters, William Smallbone, Yan Valery, Theo Walcott, Nathan Tella.
SOUTHAMPTON (3-4-3): Alex McCarthy; Lyanco, Mohammed Salisu, Jan Bednarek; Valentino Livramento, James Ward-Prowse, Oriol Romeu, Romain Perraud; Che Adams, Armando Broja, Adam Armstrong.
SUBS: Caoimhin Kelleher, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Joel Matip, Divock Origi, James Milner, Konstantinos Tsimikas, Neco Williams, Takumi Minamino, Tyler Morton.
LIVERPOOL (4-3-3): Alisson; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Andrew Robertson; Fabinho, Thiago, Jordan Henderson; Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Diogo Jota.
Following a fine run of three wins and a draw in the Premier League, Southampton fell to a surprise defeat at rock-bottom Norwich a week ago, which leaves them 13th in the table - as close to the top six as the bottom three in terms of points so far. However, 13 defeats from 17 away games in the top flight since the turn of the year means Saints boast the worst away record throughout the division in 2021 - a source of concern for Ralph Hasenhuttl's men before they take to the pitch at Anfield.
Liverpool have enjoyed an excellent week in both domestic and European competition, as they followed up a 4-0 Premier League thumping of Arsenal last weekend with Wednesday's defeat of Champions League rivals Porto by two goals to nil, Thiago Alcantara netting the first in midweek with a memorable strike. Third in the league before today's fixture, the Reds have now scored at least two goals in each of their last 16 outings, but will now encounter one of the top flight's tightest defences.
Hello and welcome to live coverage of today's Premier League clash between Liverpool and Southampton at Anfield!
