Commentary

Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
Liverpool are next in Premier League action against Chelsea on the road next Sunday, while Leeds host Hull City in their next outing in the EFL Cup on Wednesday.
Liverpool kick off their Premier League campaign with a 4-3 win over Leeds United in a very entertaining contest at Anfield. Mohamed Salah was the star of the show for the home side, starting his season in perfect fashion with a hat-trick. The Egyptian scored two penalties and a well-placed volley, while Virgil van Dijk notched the other for the Reds. Marcelo Bielsa's men put forward a spirited effort against the reigning champions, coming from behind three times. However, a late mistake from club-record signing Rodrigo Moreno allowed Salah to win the game for the hosts from the spot.

Penalty Goal
88' GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!! SALAH CONVERTS FOR HIS HAT-TRICK!!!! 4-3!!!! Liverpool are on course to kick off the campaign with a win as Salah dispatches his penalty with ease. He goes for placement on this occasion, side-footing the ball into the bottom-left corner, sending Meslier the wrong way. The Egyptian starts the campaign in perfect fashion.
87' PENALTY TO LIVERPOOL! The Reds have their second spot-kick of the game as Rodrigo brings down Fabinho in the box with an outstretched leg. Salah has the chance to notch his hat-trick.
86' CHANCE! Salah and Mane combine to open up the Leeds defence for Firmino to strike at goal. However, he scuffs his effort and the Whites are able to bundle it behind.
85' Firmino latches on to a clearance from Koch and strikes at goal, but he sees his effort deflected wide for a corner.
84' Liverpool are beginning to up the ante in the closing stages of the contest. They have the visitors pinned back in their own half.
82' Alexander-Arnold lifts a deep cross to the back post and it loops towards goal, but Meslier watches it travel behind for a goal-kick.
J. Shackleton
M. Klich
81' Shackleton comes on to replace the goalscorer Klich, who was struggling for fitness for the past few minutes.
79' DISALLOWED GOAL! Van Dijk smashes the ball into the net from close range from an Alexander-Arnold corner, but his celebrations are short-lived as the referee disallows the goal. Jones fouls Koch in the build-up, which allows the Dutchman a free run at goal before he controls the ball and dispatches it past Meslier.
78' BLOCK! Salah runs with menace into the right inside channel and he cuts the ball back for Wijnaldum to strike, but Klich puts his body on the line to block the shot.
77' WIDE! Phillips lines up the resulting free-kick and curls his effort with power towards the top-left corner. Alisson scrambles across his line, but the ball sails comfortably wide of the post.
Roberto Firmino
Yellow Card
76' Harrison intercepts Firmino's wayward pass and it forces the Brazilian to bring down the midfieder. Referee Michael Oliver books the Liverpool forward.
75' Jones goes down under pressure from Klich in the box, but the referee is not interested in Liverpool's appeal for a penalty.
74' Liverpool have not been at their best in the second half. Klopp will be furious with their lack of intensity since the restart.
72' Leeds are the first promoted side to score 3+ goals away at the reigning champions in the Premier League since Hull lost 3-4 vs Man United in November 2008.
71' OVER! Robertson angles a cross deep into the box where Koch rises to clear. However, it goes only as far as Salah, who strikes at goal on his right foot, but blazes his effort over the bar.
71' Ayling is fine to continue and we're back underway at Anfield.
70' Ayling takes a knock to the head and the referee pauses the game so he can receive treatment.
68' The Whites have shown great team spirit this evening to rally from three deficits. Bielsa and his team will have belief that they can win this.
Hélder Costa
Assist
66' Costa threads the needle to pick out Klich in the box and the midfielder does the rest with a fine strike.
M. Klich
Goal
66' GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!! KLICH GETS LEEDS' THIRD EQUALISER!!!!! The midfielder provides an excellent finish from close range to bring Bielsa's men level. Klich makes a good run inside the box to latch on to Costa's precise low ball. The midfielder still has plenty to do, but he takes one touch with his right foot before burying a strike beyond the reach of Alisson with power into left side of the net.
C. Jones
J. Henderson
66' Jones comes on to replace the Liverpool skipper in the heart of the midfield.
Rodrigo
P. Bamford
62' Rodrigo makes his Leeds debut to replace Bamford as the spearhead of the attack.
T. Roberts
Pablo Hernández
62' Roberts replaces Hernandez in the Leeds midfield.
62' Salah and Mane have space on the break and play neat passes to one another before the latter strikes at goal. However, he gets his effort all wrong, slicing his attempt wide of the target.
61' Dallas and Klich combine down the left flank, and the former sends a powerful low ball towards the near post that Alisson has to parry before Van Dijk clears.
60' Koch does just enough at the back to prevent Mane from latching on to Wijnaldum's throughball, outmuscling the forward for possession.
Fabinho
N. Keïta
59' Keita is withdrawn by Klopp and is replaced by Fabinho to sit in front of the back four.
58' DISALLOWED GOAL! Leeds have the ball in the net again as Alexander-Arnold gets away with an embarrassing error heading into his own goal. Harrison breaks behind the Liverpool defence and chips Alisson before the full-back heads into his own net, while attempting to clear the danger. Alexander-Arnold is bailed out by the offside flag against Harrison - although there's a chance he knew it was offside anyway.
56' Gomez has to be alert at the back to stop the threat of Costa in the final third, timing his sliding challenge to perfection.
53' OVER! Van Dijk rises to head Alexander-Arnold's corner at goal at the back post, but he can only glance his effort over the bar.
53' Struijk has to head behind to clear the danger for the visitors, away from the presence of Salah after a throw-in from Alexander-Arnold.
51' Costa weaves his way through red shirts on the edge of the Liverpool box, but he gets closed down before he can strike at goal.
50' Meslier comes to the fore again for the visitors, beating Salah in a footrace to slide and clear the ball ahead of the Egyptian.
49' SAVE! Keita releases Firmino in the box and he sends a low ball across the area towards Wijnaldum. The Dutchman takes one touch before striking at goal, but Meslier makes a good save before gathering at the second attempt.
46' This is only the second ever Premier league game played on the opening matchday of a season to see five goals scored before half-time, after Man Utd 5-1 Fulham in August 2006 (4-1 at half-time).
46' We're back underway at Anfield.
Both managers will have mixed reactions to the performances of their respective teams in the first half. Klopp will be furious about his side's defending, but pleased with their clinical edge. Bielsa will be pleased with the standard of football that his side have played going forward, but frustrated with the manner of the goals they have conceded. We should probably expect further goals in the second half.
Liverpool take a 3-2 lead into the break against Leeds United in their Premier League opener at Anfield. It has been a frenetic opening first half as Mohamed Salah gave the Reds the lead from the penalty spot after three minutes. Jack Harrison equalised with a fine run and strike before Virgil van Dijk headed home to restore the home side's advantage. However, he then committed a mistake to allow Patrick Bamford to score, but Salah was on point again to give Liverpool their third lead of the game.
45' + 2' HALF-TIME: LIVERPOOL 3-2 LEEDS UNITED
45' There will be two minutes of added time.
44' PENALTY SHOUT! Costa plays a one-two with Harrison before going down under pressure from Alexander-Arnold. The referee is not interested in his appeal for a penalty.
42' The tempo of the game has been brisk considering that it's the first game of the season. Both sides have been very comfortable with the ball at their feet.
40' BLOCKS! Mane lines up a strike from inside the box, but is denied by Kock. The Senegalese gathers the rebound, only to see his second effort deflected behind by Ayling.
39' Salah works the ball to Mane in the right inside channel and he hammers the ball towards goal from a tight angle. Meslier makes the save, but the offside flag is raised anyway. Replay show that it was not the correct decision.
37' Although Leeds have been poor at the back, they've played a lot of good football. There's plenty of encouragement for the Whites to level this game once again.
35' It has been frenetic opening 35 minutes at Anfield. Both managers will be pulling their hair out at the standard of the defending on show, but it has made for an entertaining contest.
Mohamed Salah
Goal
33' GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!! SALAH HAMMERS HOME HIS SECOND!!!! 3-2!!!! The craziness continues at Anfield as Salah puts Liverpool in front for a third time in 32 minutes. Robertson lifts a free-kick into the box and the ball is cleared into the path of the Egyptian by Struijk. He takes one touch to control it before powering his left-footed strike past Meslier into the top-right corner. A super effort.
P. Bamford
Goal
30' GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!! A HOWLER FROM VAN DIJK ALLOWS BAMFORD TO SCORE!!!!! 2-2!!!!!!!!! The Dutchman hands Leeds and Bamford a goal to level the scores for a second time. Van Dijk attempts a lazy clearance from a long ball and flicks to straight to Bamford. The forward capitalises and lifts his effort over Alisson and into the back of the net.
28' SAVE! Robertson tries to clip a cross towards Alexander-Arnold down the right inside channel. Stuijk goes to cut out on the ball, but he slices it towards his own net. Meslier has to backpedal to produce a fingertip save to prevent the goal.
26' van Dijk has scored his 10th Premier League goal for Liverpool - more than any other centre back in the competition since his club debut in January 2018. Each of his last nine such goals have been headed.
25' Mane probes on the edge of the Leeds box before teeing up Henderson for a strike. He connects well with his effort, but it's straight at Meslier, who makes a comfortable save.
22' CHANCE! Ayling bursts down the right flank and sends a throughball forward for the run of Bamford. Alisson races out and forces the forward to make a decision. He tries to take it round the Brazilian, but his touch is loose and the opportunity is spurned.
A. Robertson
Assist
20' Robertson sends a precise cross into the box from the left flank, allowing Van Dijk to rise and head home from six yards.
V. van Dijk
Goal
20' GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!! VAN DIJK RESTORES LIVERPOOL'S LEAD!!!!! 2-1!!!! The Dutchman powers a header into the net from close range from Robertson's corner. The Scot floats a cross into the box and Van Dijk beats the attention of Koch before planting his effort past Meslier. Liverpool are back in control.
19' Liverpool win a corner down the left flank that will be whipped into the box by Robertson.
19' Harrison is the first player to score on his Premier League debut for Leeds United since Nick Barmby in August 2002 against Manchester City, and the first to do so in an away game since Alan Smith in November 1998 – which was also at Anfield against Liverpool.
18' Harrison surges down the left flank and whips a dangerous cross into the middle that evades the head of Costa. The Portuguese should have made contact with an effort there.
16' DISALLOWED GOAL! Mane clips a strike over Meslier into the net after the keeper commits himself to clear ahead of Robertson. The goal is disallowed as the Scot was offside in the build-up.
15' Mane has space down the left flank and he tries to get the better of Ayling. However, the full-back does well to hold him at bay and wins a goal-kick for the visitors.
14' Leeds break with menace through the middle once more. Klich looks for Hernandez, but the midfielder just lacks the pace and Gomez mops up the danger.
K. Phillips
Assist
12' Phillips sends a long ball down the left, but Harrison does the rest with a fine run and effort.
J. Harrison
Goal
12' GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!! HARRISON EQUALISES !!!!!!! 1-1!!! The winger scores a sublime goal to get the Whites level in the contest. He latches on to a long ball from Phillips and knocks it past Alexander-Arnold with ease. Harrison has the pace on Gomez and shoots with power low into the bottom-left corner, away from Alisson and into the back of the net. A fine strike.
11' Leeds move the ball slickly down the left flank. Harrison finds Hernandez in space and he looks for the run of Bamford, but he ball clips the heels of Van Dijk and allows the Dutchman to clear the danger.
9' DISALLOWED GOAL! Costa holds his nerve from close range, slotting an effort past Alisson. However, the forward is offside as he latches on to Harrison's throughball 12 yards from goal.
8' Leeds have to compose themselves here. Conceding an early goal would have been their nightmare scenario and they now have to force the issue to get a positive result.
6' Salah lines up another strike from inside the box from the right side of the area, but he sees his effort charged down by the body of Struijk.
5' Salah has scored 50 goals in 63 home games in the Premier League – only Alan Shearer (47 appearances) reached 50 home goals in fewer appearances in the competition’s history.
Mohamed Salah
Penalty Goal
4' GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!! 1-0 LIVERPOOL!!! Salah goes for power and he hammers his left-footed strike into the roof of the net. Meslier has no chance and Liverpool have the perfect start to the game.
3' PENALTY TO LIVERPOOL! Salah strikes at goal and the ball hits the outstretched arm of Koch to block the effort. The referee does not hesitate in pointing to the spot.
2' Keita threads a pass through to Firmino in the right inside channel and the Brazilian has space and time in the box. However, he goes for the cutback instead of a shot and sees his offload cleared by the Whites.
1' We're underway at Anfield.
Liverpool are unbeaten in their last eight games against Leeds in all competitions (W6 D2), since a 1-2 defeat in April 2001 in the Premier League.
Leeds are without skipper Liam Cooper for the contest, leaving 21-year-old Struijk to start alongside debutant Koch in the middle of the defence. The German is the only debutant that Bielsa fields from the off, leaving Rodrigo on the bench from the off. Bamford leads the attack supported by Costa and Harrison on the flanks. Hernandez, Klich and Phillips form the midfield at Anfield.
Liverpool name a familiar line-up for the contest, starting arguably their strongest team. Alisson starts between the sticks ahead of the usual back four of Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Gomez and Robertson. Keita gets the nod to start with Henderson and Wijnaldum in the middle of the park. The potent front three of Salah, Mane and Firmino lead the line as ever for the hosts.
LEEDS UNITED SUBS: Ian Carlo Poveda-Ocampo, Ezgjan Alioski, Tyler Roberts, Kiko Casilla, Rodrigo Moreno, Jamie Shackleton, Oliver Casey.
LEEDS UNITED (4-1-4-1):  Illlan Meslier; Luke Ayling, Robin Koch, Pascal Struijk, Stuart Dallas; Kalvin Phillips; Helder Costa, Pablo Hernandez, Mateusz Klich, Jack Harrison; Patrick Bamford.
LIVERPOOL SUBS: Fabinho, James Milner, Adrian, Curtis Jones, Takumi Minamino, Divock Origi, Joel Matip.
LIVERPOOL (4-3-3): Alisson; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson; Georginio Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita; Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane.
Leeds return to the Premier League for the first time since 2004. It has been a long wait for the Whites, but their Championship win last season was deserved. Marcelo Bielsa's men have made a number of strong signings during the summer, adding Illan Meslier, Robin Koch and Rodrigo Moreno among others. Rodrigo is the club's record signing and the Spaniard will be desperate to make an impact from the off in the Premier League.
Liverpool return for the 2020/21 campaign as the reigning champions following their romp to the crown last term for the first time in 30 years. Jurgen Klopp's men will have to adjust to being the hunted side in the division in their bid to retain the title. The Reds have only added Kostas Tsimikas in the transfer window thus far. Therefore their squad has a familiar feel to it ahead of the new campaign and Klopp will be eyeing the perfect start by beating the newly-promoted Leeds.
Good afternoon and welcome to the live commentary of the Premier League clash between Liverpool and Leeds United at Anfield.
