Commentary

Liverpool particularly struggled in the first half but looked much more dangerous after the break. The introduction of Salah certainly made a big difference, and, even though he didn't play a direct role in the goal, he created plenty of space for the likes of Solanke, Firmino and, especially, Mane to operate in.
It certainly wasn't easy, but Liverpool have just about managed to leave with a much-needed, and hard-earned, 1-0 victory. They were made to work incredibly hard by Palace, who looked a lot better than they did last weekend but, despite their best efforts, couldn't quite hold on to the clean sheet they craved so badly.
FULL-TIME: LIVERPOOL 1-0 CRYSTAL PALACE
90' + 4' Palace are presented with one final chance to lump the ball into the penalty area after winning themselves a free-kick, but Lovren wins one for Liverpool after being pushed to the ground and brings an end to what should be the visitors' final opportunity of the afternoon.
90' + 3' Kaikai and Townsend do really well to wriggle away from a series of attempted tackles before the latter sets up Dann inside the box, but the latter clumsily strays offside and the linesman's flag is raised as soon as he meets the ball.
C. Benteke
Yellow Card
90' + 2' Benteke tangles with Klavan as the two battle for the ball on the edge of the Liverpool penalty area, and he becomes the latest player to pick up a booking.
90' + 1' Great strike by Salah! The Egyptian has looked excellent since coming onto the pitch, and he's caused all sorts of problems for the Palace back line. This time he cuts inside from the right wing and unleashes a wonderful shot, but, once again, it's well saved by Hennessey.
D. Lovren
Roberto Firmino
90' Liverpool have made their final change of the game, with Firmino making way for Dejan Lovren.
90' The fourth official has indicated that there will be four minutes of added time.
89' And now Robertson goes close! Liverpool keep piling bodies deep into the Palace half of the pitch. Robertson finds himself in space on the edge of the box and quickly shoots, but his stinging strike is tipped over the top of the crossbar by Hennessey, who has been kept incredibly busy today.
88' Solanke almost makes it 2-0! The striker links up really well with Firmino on the edge of the penalty area before shooting, and his low effort forces Hennessey into making a decent diving save.
87' Thumping strike by Kaikai! Liverpool aren't able to deal with a lofted pass thumped into the penalty area and allow it to drop to Kaikai, who quickly shoots but sees his rocket of a strike well saved by Mignolet.
85' Vital interception by Hennessey! A long ball is fired over the top of the Palace back line and towards Mane, who only has Hennessey to beat if he can latch onto the pass. He's unable to do so though, as Hennessey rushes off his line and just about manages to deal with the danger before saving Firmino's tame follow-up shot.
J. Schlupp
P. van Aanholt
84' Van Aanholt has made way for Jeffrey Schlupp in Palace's final change of the afternoon.
83' It's all Liverpool as they put plenty of pressure on the Palace back line. First it's Salah who tries to break through on goal, before an attempted through-ball from Mane is cut out just as it's about to reach Solanke.
81' Great opportunity for Salah! Gomez gets himself into a wonderful position out wide and swings a brilliant cross into the box. It sails over to the far post and finds Salah, who beats Fosu-Mensah in the air but can't get the better of Hennessey in the middle of the goal.
79' Once again, the corner is sent short before Kaikai whips a lovely cross into the heart of the penalty area. It looks set to find a black shirt, but Mignolet is there to comfortably cut out the danger with a decent catch.
78' A dangerous ball into the Liverpool box is just about dealt with by the home side and results in a corner for Palace. It's sent short and worked to Kaikai, who puts Robertson under pressure and forces the defender into conceding another corner.
S. Kaikai
L. Milivojević
77' Palace have made an attacking substitution, with Sullay Kaikai coming on to take the place of Milivojevic.
76' It's all Liverpool as they continue pushing forward for a second goal. Palace have already started pushing slightly further forward themselves, and they'll need to do so quickly if they're to get an equaliser.
J. McArthur
J. Puncheon
74' Palace have brought on James McArthur to replace Puncheon.
S. Mané
Goal
73' GOAL! Liverpool have finally found a way in front! A poor piece of play by Milivojevic sees him lose the ball on the edge of the Palace box, allowing Solanke to knock it into the path of Mane. The Senegalese winger runs onto it and then easily beats Hennessey with a clever finish from close range.
D. Solanke
G. Wijnaldum
71' Liverpool have made another attacking alteration, with Wijnaldum making way for Dominic Solanke.
69' It's all going on inside the Palace box! An almightly scramble kicks off as Liverpool desperately try to find a way in front, but nobody's able to make decent contact with the ball before Mane eventually fires a tame effort straight into the hands of Hennessey.
J. Henderson
Yellow Card
68' Henderson becomes the latest player to receive a yellow card.
67' A looping cross is fired into the Palace penalty area and over to Salah at the far post. The Egyptian rises high as he tries to meet the ball, and he goes down under pressure from Van Aanholt. A few of the Liverpool fans behind the goal scream for a penalty, but the referee isn't at all interested and waves play on.
65' A low cross into the penalty area from Robertson manages to find Firmino, but the Brazilian can't get the better of Fosu-Mensah, who sticks to the forward like glue as he manages to shepherd the ball behind for a goal-kick.
P. van Aanholt
Yellow Card
63' Liverpool win themselves a throw-in over on the right wing, and Gomez tries to take it quickly. He's unable to do so though as Van Aanholt cynically knocks the ball out of the youngster's hands, resulting in him receiving a yellow card.
Mohamed Salah
D. Sturridge
61' Mohamed Salah receives a rousing ovation from the Liverpool fans as he comes on to replace Sturridge and make his home debut.
59' Another good save by Hennessey! This time it's Jordan Henderson who tests Hennessey with a bouncing strike from 20 yards out, but the goalkeeper is comfortably equal to it. Robertson then tries to convert the follow-up, but, leaning back, he fires it high over the crossbar.
57' Big opportunity for Firmino! The Brazilian cuts inside from the left flank and gets past his marker before shooting, but Hennessey dives acrobatically to his left to deny the Liverpool forward the opening goal of the afternoon.
55' What a chance for Benteke! Loftus-Cheek showcases great skill as he darts down the right flank and into the penalty area. He then cuts a clever pass back to Benteke, who is in an excellent position in front of goal, but the Belgian can't hit the target with his first-time shot and sends it over the top of the crossbar.
54' A low cross in from Mane fails to penetrate the penalty area but results in another corner for Liverpool. It's well dealt with by Palace though, denying the home side another opportunity to open the scoring.
52' No, they can't. This time it's Milner who steps up and shoots, but there's slightly too much power behind his curling effort and it sails a few yards over the top of the crossbar, much to the annoyance of the Liverpool fans camped behind the goal.
51' Matip finds himself deep inside the Palace half of the pitch after charging forward. He plays a quick one-two with Sturridge and then tries to penetrate the box, but Timothy Fosu-Mensah stops him with a poor challenge that results in a free-kick for the hosts 20 yards away from goal. Can they make it count this time?
49' Townsend shows good determination as he muscles his way through the middle of the pitch on a promising run. He then sets up Van Aanholt to swing a cross into the box, where it finds Benteke in a slightly offside position.
47' Liverpool immediately go on the attack, with Firmino breaking into the left-hand side of the Palace penalty area before winning a corner. It's fired in low and finds Mane, who then tries to pick out a team-mate with a quick flick but has his pass dealt with by the visitors.
46' We're underway once again!
The two teams are making their way back out on to the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.
It's been a slightly frustrating afternoon for Liverpool so far, as they've dominated possession in all areas of the pitch but have struggled to break down Palace. Clearly frustrated at how poorly they performed last week, the visitors have looked much better today, despite the home side managing to find a few pockets of space in dangerous areas out wide.
HALF-TIME: LIVERPOOL 0-0 CRYSTAL PALACE
45' + 1' Palace are presented with one final chance to lump the ball into the box after winning themselves a free-kick. The cross in is poor, however, and Robertson is easily able to deal with the threat.
45' The fourth official has indicated that there will be just one minute of added time.
44' More good play by Liverpool over on the left wing sets up Robertson to skip into the box and cross, but it's sent slightly too near to Hennessey and is cut out by the goalkeeper.
43' Mane gets the better of Ward deep down the left flank and then fires in a dangerous cross. It fails to find a red shirt though, as James Tomkins is able to get a good head on the ball in front of the Palace goal.
41' And then Puncheon goes close! After dealing with the danger, Palace quickly counter-attack. Benteke and Loftus-Cheek link up quickly before the latter sets up Puncheon, who forces Simon Mignolet into making a diving save.
40' Thumping strike by Firmino! Liverpool are finally able to carve out a chance for themselves as Firmino unleashes a rocket of a shot, but his 20-yard effort is well dealt with by Hennessey, who parries it away from danger.
38' No, they can't. Sturridge steps up and shoots, but his curling strike fails to beat the wall of black shirts camped in front of him.
37' Sturridge is bundled over from behind by Puncheon just a yard or two outside of the Palace box, resulting in a free-kick for the home side in a very dangerous position. Can they make it count?
35' Almost a great chance for Mane! Robertson curls another beautiful cross into the penalty area and over to the far post, where Mane is waiting. He can't quite make decent contact with the ball though, and he knocks it into the hands of Hennessey instead of shooting.
33' Robertson has been causing plenty of problems for Palace down the left wing with his dangerous runs forward. He embarks on another one and then fires a low cross into the box, where it looks set to reach Firmino but is cut out at the vital moment.
31' Gomez makes a great run into the right-hand side of the Palace penalty area and latches onto a clever pass forward from Mane. He then tries to flick the ball back towards the Senegalese winger, but it's cut out by a black shirt before it can meet him in a promising position.
29' There's a brief break in play after Ragnar Klavan is caught in the face by a flailing arm from Benteke. It seemed to be largely accidental from big Belgian, however, and he just receives a talking to from the referee.
27' Sturridge does really well to spin past two Palace players as he carves out a pocket of space for himself 25 yards away from goal. He then manages to unleash a thumping shot, but it's slightly too powerful and fails to trouble Hennessey.
25' Nice play by Mane and Milner almost sets up the latter to poke a pass into the path of Sturridge inside the Palace box. Milner's pass forward is poor, however, and it rolls several yards past the striker.
23' Puncheon battles his way down the left wing as he tries to swing a cross into the penalty area. He's well marshalled by Matip though, and the defender manages to shepherd the ball behind for a goal-kick.
21' Palace continue pushing forward after doing well to push Liverpool onto the back foot. A cross-field pass is fired over to the left flank and into the path of Van Aanholt, but the Dutchman's run forward is mistimed and the linesman's flag is quickly raised.
19' Benteke, who has seen little of the ball so far, cuts inside from the left wing and tries to shoot, but he's immediately bundled over and wins Palace a free-kick in a promising position. Luka Milivojevic steps up and unleashes a thumping strike, but it sails straight into the wall camped in front of him.
17' Sadio Mane ploughs his way towards the Palace box as Liverpool keep putting the visitors under plenty of pressure. He gets past two players and then tries to take on Hennessey, but the Senegal international's final touch is poor and knocks it into the goalkeeper's hands.
J. Puncheon
Yellow Card
15' Jason Puncheon sticks out a foot as he tries to halt the run of Joe Gomez but ends up catching the youngster with a late challenge, leaving the referee with no choice but to show him an early yellow card.
14' Excellent opportunity for Joel Matip! A Liverpool free-kick is taken quickly and poked down the left wing towards Robertson. The full-back then swings a delightful ball right onto the head of Matip, who gets the better of Hennessey but can't find the back of the net.
13' Georginio Wijnaldum and Firmino play a quick one-two between themselves over on the left-hand side of the Palace penalty area before the latter tries to tee up Robertson, but Ward is just about to deal with the danger with a vital interception.
12' A long ball down the right wing manages to pick out Joel Ward in a promising position. He quickly brings down the pass before taking on Robertson, but the Liverpool full-back comes out on top with a firm but fair tackle.
10' Chance for Milner! Space opens up deep down the left flank, allowing Robertson and Milner to link up really nicely. The latter then breaks into the penalty area and shoots, but his low effort is fired straight into the hands of Wayne Hennessey at the near post.
8' A dangerous cross is curled into the heart of the Liverpool box and manages to pick out James Tomkins, who rises high but can't hit the target with his looping header.
7' Townsend picks up a loose ball over on the right wing and quickly darts forward. He initially gets the better of James Milner before being caught by the midfielder, resulting in a free-kick for Palace in a promising position.
5' A heavy touch from Roberto Firmino loses the Brazilian the ball inside the Liverpool half of the pitch and presents Ruben Loftus-Cheek with a chance to fly forward, but the midfielder can't pick out Andros Townsend and knocks the ball out for a throw-in.
3' A poor attempted header from Christian Benteke is picked up by Daniel Sturridge, allowing the striker to plough forward. He then works the ball out to Andrew Robertson, who swings in a dangerous cross from the left wing, but it's just about dealt with by Patrick van Aanholt at the far post.
1' We're off! Palace get us underway, attacking from left to right.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
Meanwhile, Palace boss Frank de Boer has made two alterations to the team that featured in their last outing, with Jairo Reidewald and Wilfried Zaha making way for James Tomkins and Andros Townsend.
Jurgen Klopp has decided to make five changes to the Liverpool side that started the draw against Watford last weekend, with the most notable inclusion being new signing Andrew Robertson, who replaces Alberto Moreno. There are also places in the starting line-up for Joe Gomez, Ragnar Klavan, James Milner and Daniel Sturridge, who replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dejan Lovren, Emre Can and Mohamed Salah, respectively.
Crystal Palace substitutes: Speroni, Schlupp, Kelly, Kaikai, McArthur, Cabaye, Eyenga-Lokilo.
Crystal Palace XI (3-4-3): Hennessey; Fosu-Mensah, Dann, Tomkins; Ward, Milivojevic, Puncheon, Van Aanholt; Townsend, Benteke, Loftus-Cheek.
Liverpool substitutes: Karius, Flanagan, Lovren, Can, Salah, Solanke, Origi.
Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Mignolet; Gomez, Matip, Klavan, Robertson; Henderson, Milner, Wijnaldum; Mane, Firmino, Sturridge.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this afternoon…
Despite the two sides battling at different ends of the table in recent seasons, games between them have often been exciting and open affairs. Palace have thoroughly enjoyed their trips to Anfield over the past few years, with three of the last four meetings here ending in victories for the Eagles.
Patience will be key if De Boer is to implement his own style of play on a Palace side that struggled for much of last season, but the Dutchman needs to get some points on the board as soon as possible. Liverpool’s defensive struggles last weekend will have filled him with hope about his team’s chances of scoring here today, but the injury suffered by Wilfried Zaha is certainly a huge blow.
Selhurst Park was filled with optimism heading into Palace’s first game of the season. The club’s capture of Frank de Boer was certainly an impressive one, despite his recent struggles at Inter. That optimism quickly turned to despair, however, as the Dutchman’s side were easily beaten by newly promoted Huddersfield Town, who comfortably tore through their porous back line on three separate occasions.
Liverpool improved during the week, however, and managed to pick up an impressive 2-1 win against Hoffenheim in the first leg of the Champions League play-offs. They’ll be hoping to build on that solid performance with a first win of the Premier League season here today, especially as they’ve got Arsenal and Manchester City waiting for them in their next two league games.
Liverpool’s opening game of the season may have been entertaining but it didn’t produce the result Jurgen Klopp would have been hoping for. Despite dazzling inside the final third of the pitch, the Reds looked just as disjointed at the back as they did for most of last season, allowing Watford to fire three past them and leave with a hard-earned draw.
Good afternoon and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Premier League game between Liverpool and Crystal Palace at Anfield.
