Leeds United v Manchester City Live Commentary, 03/10/2020

1 - 1
Rodrigo (59)
R. Sterling (17)
Elland Road

Both teams head off for the international break then for two weeks off Premier League duty. Leeds have plenty to look forward to this season. So do Man City still if they can regain the steel they had in previous seasons. That's all for now. Goodbye!
That's a highly creditable result for Leeds who rise to fifth in the nascent Premier League table. They could have done even better if not for the heroics of Ederson in the City goal. City rise to 10th. For half the game, City couldn't cope with Leeds' intensity. That will concern City, who will take the draw but will have to view this as two points dropped in their pursuit of Liverpool.
Leeds and Man City share the spoils then in a highly anticipated match which did not disappoint. Guardiola's team looked on course for a comfortable victory in the first half, but Leeds stormed back to cancel out Sterling's opener via Rodrigo. Bielsa's men had the better opportunities to win but the two sides will have to settle for a point a piece.
90' + 3' No, they can't. De Bruyne sends one last ball into Leeds' box. It's nodded on to Meslier who dives over and smothers it. The goal-kick goes upfield, City try one last attack, but there's no more time!
S. Dallas
Yellow Card
Leeds United
90' + 2' Dallas receives a yellow card for bringing down Silva near the touchline. Can Man City nick this?
90' Man City win a free-kick deep in Leeds' half from a Davis foul. De Bruyne fires it in and the visitors get a corner out of it. Leeds survive once more. They have to hold on for three more minutes.
88' Man City win two corners in a row but Leeds hold firm each time with Sterling heading over from the second one. Leeds could be excused for starting to feel a little nervous at this late stage of the game.
86' Seconds after a City appeal for a penalty on Sterling is denied, Bamford can't finish a chance to win this for Leeds! The Leeds striker is through on goal as Man City over-commit upfield. He only has Ederson to beat but City's keeper rushes out to block the shot.
84' The momentum has swung back into City's favour over the past few minutes. Sterling flashes a shot whiskers wide from distance. That handball shout by the way came as Koch fell. There was nothing he could do about it.
82' There's a big City shout for handball as De Bruyne crosses from the left of the box and Leeds block on the line. The referee's unmoved but that was close for Leeds who now have something to be worried about.
81' Man City are starting to perk up as Fernandinho fires way wide and Silva comes a little closer. The rain is pelting down here in Leeds by the way. The weather's miserable but the football has been anything but.
79' Laporte carries the ball out from the back and suddenly Man City are threatening. De Bruyne takes aim from the edge of the box and a Leeds man slides in to make the block.
R. Mahrez
Manchester City
77' Man City make another change too. Fernardinho is on for Mahrez. That's a very deferential move by Guardiola, who knows there's only going to be one winner of this game if things carry on as they have been.
L. Davis
M. Klich
Leeds United
77' Leeds substitution. The industrious Klich is replaced by the young defender Davis. Dallas may move into midfield.
74' Ederson makes another save from Bamford at very close range as the striker shoots from Rodrigo's pass! Play continues but that was a vital stop. Up the other end, Man City win a corner of their own as Foden's shot is blocked. This is thrilling stuff.
72' Costa cuts inside from the left and his shot cannons out for a corner. Phillips' corner is flicked on to the far post but there's no one in Leeds white there. The hosts rebuild.
N. Aké
B. Mendy
Manchester City
71' City make the change. Ake comes on for Mendy. The Frenchman's been run ragged by Ayling.
71' Man City are preparing another substitution. They're clinging onto the draw at the moment.
70' Leeds come even closer to taking the lead! Ayling crosses early from the right and Poveda nods it on to Rodrigo. Ederson tips Rodrigo's header over at point-blank range! Leeds don't achieve much with the corner but they really want to win this.
68' Leeds win a free-kick down their left. Phillips swings it in and Koch gets his head on it, beating Ederson and hitting the post! It rebounds into play but luckily the flag goes up in Man City's favour.
66' Laporte cannily cuts out Cooper's ball over the top aimed for Bamford. Mahrez performs a stepover as he enters the box and fizzes a shot wide of the right-hand post.
Bernardo Silva
Ferran Torres
Manchester City
65' Man City substitution. Torres, who's faded this half, is replaced by Silva.
64' Leeds aren't happy with being level. They know they can win this. Phillips has a pop from distance and Ederson raises his arms to catch it. Man City immediately break and De Bruyne curls wide from the left of the box.
62' De Bruyne's fired up now which is a scary sight. The Belgian bursts through the centre of midfield into the box and succeeds in winning City a corner off Phillips. Mahrez puts it into the box and Leeds promptly get rid of it.
60' That equaliser is no less than Leeds deserve. They've been the better side in the second third of this game and have had 68 per cent possession so far this half. What can Man City muster now?
Leeds United
59' GOAL FOR LEEDS! 1-1! Rodrigo grabs the equaliser from the corner! Phillips' ball comes in and Ederson can't hold it. It drops to Rodrigo who prods home from close range!
58' Chance for Leeds! Rodrigo teases Walker and blasts an effort towards the top left corner from the left of the box. It deflects off Dias and goes out for a corner. Ederson tried to tip it over as a precaution.
57' Mahrez tries to make progress down the flank but he's seen off by Leeds' captain Cooper. A throw is all Man City will get. This game is finely poised.
T. Roberts
Leeds United
56' Leeds make another early attacking substitution. Roberts makes way for Rodrigo.
55' Sterling jinks inside from the left and has another shot blocked. The ball rolls back to De Bruyne in space and the Belgian can't keep his effort down. The assistant's flag is up anyway.
54' Roberts scythes down Rodri near the left touchline. De Bruyne sends the delivery in but it's straight into the arms of Meslier. Man City are fortunate as Leeds' counter breaks down.
52' Mendy boots Bamford's knockdown out for a Leeds throw-in. Leeds ping the ball around for a while until Ayling's cross sails harmlessly out of play. It's a shame as Bamford and Roberts were both in promising positions.
50' Leeds are dictating the play at the moment although it is mostly in their own half. All Man City can do is sit back and be patient.
48' Leeds ask for a free-kick as Walker nudges Costa out of a challenge but it's not forthcoming. The hosts look calm and focused despite being behind.
46' The second half gets started then. Let's see whether Leeds can keep up the momentum they built towards the end of the first half.
I. Poveda-Ocampo
E. Alioski
Leeds United
46' Leeds make a bold half-time substitution. Poveda replaces the quiet Alioski. Costa will now play on the left for Leeds while Poveda will play wide right.
It's a sign of Leeds' recovery in this game that they actually finished the first half having had more of the ball than Man City, edging possession by 52 per cent to City's 48 per cent. That doesn't happen often against a Guardiola side. Leeds will surely continue to stream forward in the second half. Guardiola's got some thinking to do.
Leeds have done well to battle back into this game. Man City were dominant for the first half hour, taking the lead through Sterling's cool finish. However, Leeds stemmed the tide and twice almost equalised with only Ederson denying Dallas and Ayling. More of this to come!
45' + 1' Ederson keeps Ayling out on the brink of half-time! Mendy fails to control Phillips' diagonal free-kick from the base of midfield and Ayling is on it like a flash, darting into the box. Ayling sells the dummy and aims for the near bottom corner but Ederson stays alert and dives low to make the stop.
45' There'll be just the one added minute in this first half. It's been a decent watch so far.
44' Phillips swings the corner in but the referee's spotted a Leeds foul. Bielsa paces and squats in his usual anxious fashion down on the touchline.
43' Costa chases a hopeful ball forward down the right and holds it up near the corner flag for Leeds. Mendy and Laporte team up to win it back but not for long. Costa's cross is blocked by Laporte and goes out for a Leeds corner.
41' Foden sends a Leeds midfielder for an ice cream but his teammates can't make the most of it.
39' Man City defend two corners in a row. The visitors spring forward on the counter but Dallas puts a stop to Sterling's twisting run into the box. Mahrez picks up the pieces and Foden lashes a left-footed effort wide from the right.
37' Ederson denies Dallas! Leeds put together some lovely passing play on the edge of City's box and Dallas bursts through unexpectedly to get a shot on goal. Ederson slides out to deny the Northern Irishman. Leeds get a corner out of it.
B. Mendy
Yellow Card
Manchester City
36' Mendy gets a yellow card for that trip on Costa.
36' Man City are pinning Leeds into their own final third. Koch heads the ball out and Mendy trips Costa as Leeds look to break away on the counter-attack.
35' Leeds have improved since they switched to their usual 4-3-3 formation a few minutes ago. They were probably too timid in the first half hour of this game.
33' Mendy bombs into the centre from left-back and looks for Sterling wide left. Sterling is exasperated to discover that he's offside.
31' Klich curls in a cross for Bamford but Ederson is alive to the danger and claims it, immediately distributing it to Mendy. The game's becoming more of an end-to-end affair now after that early City dominance.
29' That's better from Leeds. Ayling's cross is held by Ederson with Bamford lurking in the six-yard box, then Roberts is unable to keep the ball in play.
27' Leeds are starting to enjoy a little more of the ball now. They've worked hard to be just the one goal behind. There's plenty of time for them to recover.
25' Leeds get a rare opportunity to shoot themselves. Bamford gets slid into the penalty area by Costa but fires well wide of the left-hand post.
23' Man City just keep on coming. Foden jinks into the centre of the box and again Leeds frantically block.
21' Sterling has 11 goals in his last 12 Premier League games now. The England man's in great form. Meanwhile, De Bruyne has another effort blocked by Klich. De Bruyne takes the corner and Laporte's header sails over the bar.
19' Leeds try to get themselves back into the game straight away as Roberts is offside from Dallas' throughball.
Ferran Torres
Manchester City
18' Torres can claim the assist for that one. The Spaniard's determined to make the most of his opportunity in City's starting 11.
R. Sterling
Manchester City
17' GOAL! 1-0 MAN CITY! Sterling weaves his way through the left of the box from Torres' pass and fires a clean strike into the bottom right corner. Meslier was never keeping that out.
16' Torres makes his way into the centre of the box and Leeds get in the way of him again. It doesn't matter much though...
14' Torres' shot from the right of the box is blocked. Leeds go on the attack and Ayling's deep cross is headed over by Alioski. Walker got lucky there as he switched off with Alioski darting in front of him quickly.
P. Bamford
Yellow Card
Leeds United
12' Leeds striker Bamford earns the game's first yellow card as he brings down Laporte. Leeds need some respite. Man City have been relentless in these opening minutes.
11' The issue is when Leeds will get possession. They've had 25 per cent of it so far. De Bruyne, always a menace, ghosts forward and spanks a powerful effort towards goal. Koch bravely dives in front of it and concedes another corner. Torres heads over from Mahrez's ball in.
9' Foden skips forward in midfield and feeds Torres wide right. Cooper punts Torres' cross out for a throw-in. Leeds will no doubt be defending for a lot of this game but they won't be afraid to get forward when they do win possession.
7' Leeds venture forward but can't create a shooting opportunity. Ayling wins a free-kick in his own half as Sterling chases after the ball.
5' Leeds survive the corner and another as Sterling is caught offside from Walker's ball forward. Leeds have barely seen the ball yet.
4' De Bruyne hits the post! City get a free-kick down their left as Sterling, playing on the left, is fouled by Ayling. De Bruyne looks to catch Meslier out at his near post and it rebounds off the upright! Ayling scrambles it out and Leeds defend the corner.
3' City take the corner short and Sterling fires high and wide from range. The visitors are looking to assert themselves in these opening stages.
2' Man City get an early shot on goal as the Yorkshireman Walker steps forward from full-back and smashes an effort out for a corner via a deflection.
1' And we're underway here in Leeds!
The two sides are out on the Elland Road pitch. Leeds will play in their iconic all-white strip while Man City will play in their black away kit.
This is the first time Leeds and Man City have met in any competition since February 2013. Man City have lost just one of their last 31 Premier League games against promoted sides - that was their famous 3-2 away defeat to Norwich City last season. However, Leeds are no ordinary promoted side. Man City had better watch out.
Leeds make one change to the team that started their last game. Alioski comes in for Harrison who is ineligible to play against his parent club Man City. There are three changes to the City team that lost to Leicester. There's a new centre-back pairing of Laporte and the debutant Dias while Torres starts after his good game midweek in the EFL Cup.

Leeds have made a typically lively start to Premier League life under Bielsa, winning their last two matches. Man City, meanwhile, will want to redeem themselves after slumping to a 5-2 home defeat to Leicester in their last league game. This has all the ingredients to be one of the most exciting games of this nascent season.
It's all about the master and the apprentice here as Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds takes on Pep Guardiola's Man City. This is the first time these two bosses have met in all competitions since Guardiola's Barcelona side took on Bielsa's Athletic Bilbao three times in 2011-12, remaining unbeaten.
