That concludes our commentary of the Serie A fixture between Lecce and Inter! We hope you’ve enjoyed it!
Lecce are back in action next Saturday when they travel to face Sassuolo. Inter play on the same day - hosting Spezia.
Inter manage to take all three points from the Stadio Via del Mare despite a heroic effort from Lecce, thanks to Dumfries’ last-gasp winner with the final kick of the game. The Nerazzurri started their campaign in the perfect way, taking the lead through Lukaku after just two minutes of play. Lecce offered precious little in the first half but came out of the blocks swinging to start the second, netting 120 seconds after the restart thanks to Ceesay’s lovely take. Inzaghi kept throwing strikers on as the match stretched on but his side were unable to take one of their countless chances, until substitute wing-back Dumfries bundled Barella’s corner over the line deep into stoppage time!
90' + 7' FULL-TIME: LECCE 1-2 INTER.
M. Hjulmand
Yellow Card
90' + 5' Hjulmand is shown a late yellow card for protestation following the goal.
Lautaro Martínez
90' + 5' Martinez gets the crucial assist that should surely seal the three points for Inter!
D. Dumfries
90' + 5' INTER SCORE WITH THE LAST KICK OF THE GAME! 2-1! INCREDIBLE! Barella’s corner is floated into the centre of the 18-yard box, where it’s nodded down by Martinez. Dzeko misses the follow-up effort but Dumfries charges it down and chests it past Falcone!
90' + 4' Inter are given one final corner - can they steal the win at the death?!
90' + 2' The fourth official indicates four minutes will be added to the end of the match for stoppages.
90' Dimarco’s corner from the right looks for Lukaku at the far post but Baschirotto clears the danger with a nervy backwards header.
J. Correa
M. Škriniar
88' Inzaghi sends a fourth striker onto the pitch as Correa replaces Skriniar.
L. Colombo
Yellow Card
87' Colombo is shown a yellow card for a cynical challenge on Barella that breaks up the play.
86' Inter have less than five minutes left to rescue the three points after a fantastic start to the match. With three strikers on the pitch and the chances coming with regularity it seems a matter of time until the Nerazzurri break the deadlock, though Falcone’s efforts have been equal to the challenge.
84' ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! LUKAKU THWARTED AGAIN! Dumfries plays a teasing low cross into the penalty area for Dzeko, who is unable to reach the delivery. Lukaku tails behind for the follow-up effort but can’t beat a floored Falcone from three yards out!
A. Blin
Yellow Card
82' Blin is shown a yellow card for a mistimed sliding tackle that catches the ankle of Bastoni.
81' Colombo has scored six of his seven league goals in home matches (all in Serie B) – the player born in 2002 was the youngest to have scored more than once in the 2021/22 Serie B campaign (six goals for SPAL).
79' LUKAKU SCORES BUT IT WON’T COUNT! Dimarco fizzes a corner into the penalty area for Dzeko, whose point-blank header is denied by a spectacular Falcone save. The rebound comes to Lukaku, who tucks it underneath the arms of the goalkeeper but the referee’s whistle had brought play to a halt a second earlier for a foul in the build-up.
77' Strefezza’s set-piece meets the head of Baschirotto, who can only flick it on behind the goal for a goal-kick.
76' Banda drives towards goal and fires a shot in between Skriniar and Dumfries, forcing Handanovic into a diving left-handed stop which gives Lecce a corner-kick.
Þ. Helgason
74' It's three changes at one time for Lecce, who also replace Gonzalez with Helgason.
M. Listkowski
K. Bistrović
74' Listkowski comes into the game in order to provide some relief to the Lecce midfield, replacing Bistrovic.
L. Banda
F. Di Francesco
74' Di Francesco is withdrawn for Banda with 16 minutes to go.
72' Inter are really pushing for the second goal with three strikers on the pitch but Lecce are holding on to their point valiantly, defending their penalty area with tenacity. With under 20 minutes remaining it’s going to take quite the physical and mental effort to repel this Nerazzurri attack for much longer.
70' OFF THE POST! INTER CLOSE TO RETAKING THE LEAD! Dimarco gets a second chance to deliver a cross after retaking possession following the clearance of the corner and delivers an incredibly accurate ball to the far post for Dumfries. The newly introduced wing-back gets a great leap but is denied by the woodwork as Falcone can only look on nervously!
69' Dimarco’s corner from the left is met by a strong two-fisted punch by Falcone.
E. Džeko
H. Çalhanoğlu
67' With Inter still looking to retake the lead Inzaghi makes an attacking substitution, taking Calhanoglu off for Dzeko.
D. Dumfries
M. Darmian
67' Dumfries comes on for Darmian as Inter make a change at wing-back.
66' Lecce are unbeaten in their last three Serie A meetings against Inter at the Via del Mare (W1, D2) – against no other side do the Nerazzurri have a longer current winless run away from home in the competition.
L. Colombo
A. Ceesay
63' Colombo comes on for Ceesay as Barone makes a change in attack with just under 30 minutes left.
M. Darmian
Yellow Card
63' Darmian cynically tugs Gonzalez back during a Lecce counter-attack, forcing the referee to show the wing-back a yellow card.
61' GREAT SAVE! Bistrovic smashes his free-kick through the wall forcing Handanovic into a fantastic diving save to keep the score level!
60' Calhanoglu’s outstretched leg takes Hjulmand down 20 yards from goal, giving Lecce a chance to test Handanovic from range.
59' Inzaghi’s change at wing-back indicates a bit of a shuffle on the pitch as Bastoni will slot in as a natural left-sided centre-back, while Dimarco is pushed out to the flank.
A. Bastoni
R. Gosens
57' Gosens comes off as well, with Bastoni taking his place.
H. Mkhitaryan
M. Brozović
57' Mkhitaryan comes in for Brozovic three minutes before the hour as the booked midfielder is withdrawn.
M. Brozović
Yellow Card
55' Brozovic clumsily barges through the back of Strefezza right in front of the referee, earning a yellow card.
53' Strefezza cuts inside during the second-phase of the corner and fires a teasing effort to the far corner that narrowly misses the intended target!
52' Di Francesco scoops a cross towards the penalty spot again looking for the run of Ceesay but a desperate Dimarco comes across to head it behind for a corner.
50' The hosts have come out of the half-time interval looking a completely different side attacking side. Inter are still bossing possession in the early stages but Barone’s side are moving forward with much more purpose and intent than in the first half.
F. Di Francesco
48' Di Francesco registers the assist for Lecce's response!
A. Ceesay
48' LECCE GET THE EQUALISER! 1-1! INCREDIBLE! A lovely touch from Ceesay gets the counter-attack started for the hosts, poking it out to the left wing for Di Francesco. The winger drives towards the penalty area and prods a pass forward for the striker, who doesn’t need a touch to slot a left-footed effort into the far corner!
46' Inter get the match restarted from the kick-off!
Inter will no doubt concern themselves with doubling their advantage, with a one-goal lead never entirely safe despite the Nerazzurri’s on-pitch dominance. With Correa and Dzeko available from the bench there is no shortage of options for the visitors to provide their opponents with a different challenge - with the creative Mkhitaryan also available from the bench to pull the strings in midfield. Lecce will need to open up and venture forward if they wish to salvage something from the game, as even a point would be a welcome result to the newly promoted side.
A comfortable Inter take a 1-0 lead into the half-time interval at the Stadio Via del Mare, with Lukaku’s goal 120 seconds into the game the only difference between the two on the score line. On the pitch however it was a much different affair, with the visitors thoroughly dominating proceedings from start to finish - forcing their opponents to chase shadows for the majority of the opening period. Only a bit of insurance escape Inzaghi’s side, who were completely untested at the back as they launched wave after wave of attack. The hosts failed to link their midfield with the attack with any regularity as Strefezza was an isolated figure - failing to find striker Ceesay with a pass once.
45' + 4' HALF-TIME: LECCE 0-1 INTER.
45' + 3' Darmian is bowled over by Gallo on the right wing as Lecce look to prevent one last surging Inter attack.
45' + 1' Inter have lost only one of their 16 Serie A matches played in the first half of the season against Lecce (W13 D2): 0-1 defeat in 2000, with a Davor Vugrinec strike.
44' The fourth official indicates four minutes will be added to the end of the half for stoppages.
42' With under five minutes left it looks as though Inter will head into the interval ahead and comfortable. The score will be of some concern for the coach however, as the visitors have certainly deserved - but not found - a bit of insurance.
40' Strefezza manages to turn his marker and fashion an acute-angle shot on target which Handanovic has no trouble with as he gathers it confidently.
38' Calhanoglu swings the set-piece into the penalty area but the Turkey international sends his delivery high over the crowd of bodies and out of the 18-yard box on the other side.
37' Now it’s a Lecce player who needs treatment as Martinez slides into a furious challenge, catching Gonzalez and winning the ball in the process. The referee allows play to continue as Inter win a corner-kick at the other end.
36' Inter players were furious with the referee, demanding a VAR check to ascertain whether or not a red card is worthy. Baschirotto went over the ball with his sliding challenge but neither the match official or the video assistant sees enough to warrant additional punishment.
34' After receiving magic spray for two minutes, Martinez has gradually climbed back to his feet despite nursing a heavy limp. Inzaghi has told Correa to warm up but the initial indication from the pitch is that Martinez wants a chance to run off the injury.
F. Baschirotto
Yellow Card
32' Baschirotto’s two-footed sliding challenge takes him through Martinez - leaving the Inter striker in considerable pain. It’s a yellow card for the centre-back, the first booking of the match.
31' It’s become very congested in midfield with Brozovic and Hjulmand battling furiously to keep possession of the ball.
29' A high ball over the top of the defence is corralled by Di Francesco, who misses the ball during his attempted volley, instead catching the leg of Darmian.
27' Gendrey holds up play during a Lecce throw-in so Dimarco can receive treatment following a heavy collision near the touchline. The defender should be okay to continue after having his leg checked, leaving Inter down to 10 for the moment.
25' Inter have done everything except score a second goal in the opening 30 minutes, with Inzaghi’s side firmly in the ascendancy. Handanovic hasn’t had a save to make so far while the visitors have mustered over three times as many passes as their opponents.
23' Hjulmand slides into a challenge on De Vrij, mistiming the tackle with a raised leg. It’s a free-kick for Inter in midfield as the Lecce captain again receives an earful from the referee.
A. Blin
M. Çetin
21' An injury forces Cetin off just 21 minutes into the new season, with Blin sent on to take his place at centre-back.
19' Gosens hooks a cross to the far post looking to recreate Inter’s earlier goal but this time Gonzalez is aware of the danger as he tracks back to make a desperate clearance.
17' Strefezza’s corner from the left fails to find a team-mate as Lukaku beats it away with a powerful headed clearance.
16' Dimarco looks to hit a long pass early and prevent Lecce from settling back in their defensive block but the powerful delivery is hit with too much force as it rolls back to Falcone.
14' Inter are fully in command of the match as we approach the quarter-hour mark, with the visitors dictating the tempo and linking wonderfully in neat passing triangles. It’s going to be a long match for the hosts, who have been chasing shadows since kick-off.
12' Hjulmand comes across and clatters into Barella, sending the Italy international down the ground in a heap in the centre-circle. The referee has no option but to award Inter a free-kick in midfield, but he fails to produce a card for the Lecce captain.
10' With time and space 30 yards from goal, Calhanoglu opts to hit a dipping strike that gives Falcone a fair bit of trouble, with the goalkeeper forced to his knees to hurriedly parry the strike.
8' Martinez attempts a speculative curling effort from 25 yards out after turning ahead of Gonzalez but the effort flies well wide of the goal.
6' Strefezza’s corner from the right finds the head of Gonzalez, who can only pop it up in the air for Handanovic to gather comfortably.
4' Lukaku cuts inside after finding space on the right wing but his scooped cross for Martinez fails to find the target, rolling out behind the goalkeeper instead.
M. Darmian
2' Darmian's nod across the six-yard box is credited as the assist for Inter's opener.
R. Lukaku
2' IT’S A PERFECT START! 1-0 INTER! It’s a simple goal for Lukaku, who gets back on the score sheet for Inter after a year’s absence! Dimarco’s cross to the back post meets the head of Darmian, whose unselfish nod across the face of goal sets up a simple tap-in from the Belgium international!
1' Lecce get the match underway from the kick-off!
Inzaghi keeps his shape the same as last season, with Inter starting in a 3-5-2. Handanovic starts between the posts with Skriniar, De Vrij and Dimarco making up the defence. Darmian and Gosens are selected as the wing-backs with Barella, Brozovic and Calhanoglu playing behind a strike-partnership of Lukaku and Martinez.
Baroni lines his side up in a 4-3-3 for the first game of the season, with Falcone selected to start in goal. Gallo and Gendrey get the start at full-back while Bacshirotto and Cetin pair up in the middle of defence. A midfield trio of Gonzalez, Hjulmand and Bistrovic will pull the strings for Di Francesco and Strefezza on the wings with Ceesay left as the lone striker.
INTER SUBS: Alex Cordaz, Andre Onana, Raoul Bellanova, Edin Dzeko, Alessandro Bastoni, Alessandro Fontanarosa, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Kristjan Asllani, Mattia Zanotti, Joaquin Correa, Roberto Gagliardini, Denzel Dumfries.
INTER XI (3-5-2): Samir Handanovic; Federico Dimarco, Stefan De Vrij, Milan Skriniar; Robin Gosens, Hakan Calhanoglu, Marcelo Brozovic, Nicolo Barella, Matteo Darmian; Lautaro Martinez, Romelu Lukaku.
LECCE SUBS: Mattia Ciucci, Federico Brancolini, Marco Bleve, Alexis Blin, Mats Lemmens, Medon Berisha, Marcin Listkowski, Pablo Delgado, Francesco Di Mariano, Thorir Johann Helgason, Joel Persson, Lorenzo Colombo, Gianluca Frabotta.
LECCE XI (4-3-3): Wladimiro Falcone; Antonino Gallo, Federico Baschirotto, Yildirim Mert Cetin, Valentin Gendrey; Joan Gonzalez, Morten Hjulmand, Kristijan Bistrovic; Federico Di Francesco, Assan Ceesay, Gabriel Strefezza.
With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let's take a look at how the sides are lining up - starting with our hosts!
Inter pushed Milan all the way to the final day last season but came up just short despite winning their final match comfortably. Looking to go one better and recapture the title this season, Simone Inzaghi will be able to unite star pairing Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku, who combined for 41 league goals two years ago.
Lecce earned promotion to the top flight for the first time since 2019/20 after winning the Serie B last season, but they are faced with a difficult task in their return - hosting Inter at the Stadio Via del Mare. The Salentini managed a 1-1 draw with the Nerazzurri the last time these two clubs faced; a result which coach Marco Baroni would certainly settle for.
Hello and welcome to our LIVE commentary of the Serie A fixture between Lecce and Inter!
