Commentary

That's all for today, goodbye!
Italy have reached the quarter-finals of the competition for just the second time in their history. They will have to wait to find out whether they will face Netherlands or Japan, who play later today, in the next round.
Italy are through to the quarter-finals after a 2-0 win over China. Italy thought they had taken the lead in the 10th minute when Giacinti slotted the ball into the back of the net, but she had drifted offside in the build-up. She then did break the deadlock five minutes later though when Bartoli's shot rolled under Peng and she fired the ball into the empty goal. Substitute Galli got their second just after half-time when her low shot beat the keeper at her near post and nestled into the bottom corner. China did create a lot of chances for themselves but weren't clinical enough to get on the scoresheet.
90' + 6' FULL-TIME: ITALY 2-0 CHINA.
90' + 4' Giugliano is down receiving some treatment after she was caught by a late challenge by Zhang. She is quickly off the pitch and although the injury looks like it's just an impact one, she's unlikely to come back on for the last few seconds.
90' + 3' GOOD SAVE BY PENG! Giacinti once again gets the chance to run at Lin and she gets past the defender. She cuts back inside before hitting her strike towards the near post but the keeper gets across well to palm it away.
90' + 2' Song plays a good throughball into the box for Li Ying to run onto but Giuliani is quickly off her line to close her down and pick it up before the forward can get on the end of it.
90' Giacinti is up front on her own but she dribbles past Lin to get a shot away. She's aiming for the bottom corner but instead sends it just wide of the post.
88' Italy are trying to get the ball high upfield so that they can keep it in the corner and run the clock down, but their passes forward into Giacinti just haven't been good enough to reach the forward.
86' China's frustration at not being able to get in behind Italy is really starting to show now as they continue to just put long balls into the box in the hope that someone will get on the end of it.
84' Wang Shuang decides to have another go from long range and she tries to curl her effort into the top corner. Her shot is overhit though and it sails over the crossbar without troubling Giuliani.
82' ZHANG COMES CLOSE! Song puts a deep cross into the far post where three of her team-mates are waiting. Zhang rises highest, but she can't direct her header on target as she sends it wide.
81' Bartoli misjudges the bounce of the ball and it goes over her and falls to Li Ying. The forward takes it down well with her first touch but is then closed down by Linari before can put a cross in.
79' Italy are stuck in their own half at the minute due to how well China are keeping possession. It's the final ball into the box that's letting China down though as they chase the goal that would get them back into the game.
77' Song pulls away from Linari on the right wing and puts a good cross into the box from the byline. Wang Shuang is close to getting on the end of it but Gama reaches it first to clear Italy's lines.
75' Italy don't clear their lines again and the ball bounces to Han. She takes the shot on the volley, but her shot is low and straight at Giuliani who gets down to make the save.
73' Song receives the ball in a lot of space on the edge of the box and can't seem to decide what to do with it. She tries to cross it into Li Ying in the middle, but it's intercepted by Linari.
M. Rosucci
B. Bonansea
Italy
71' Final change of the game for Italy sees Rosucci come on in place of Bonansea.
69' Wang Shuang has to stretch to get on the end of Yang's pass to her but she manages to square it towards Li Ying. It's just ahead of the forward though, but she would've been in on goal if she had got on the end of it.
67' Italy are struggling to clear their lines at the minute as China play some short passes between their forward players to create some space in Italy's box. Eventually, it's Yao that gets a shot away, but Cernoia blocks it.
65' CHANCE FOR WANG SHUANG! She was surrounded by three Italian defenders but she does really well to get a shot away as she slips before she makes contact with the ball. There's not a lot of pace on the shot though and it's a comfortable save for Giuliani.
I. Mauro
V. Bergamaschi
Italy
63' Second roll of the dice for Italy sees Bergamaschi come off for Mauro.
Yao Wei
Wang Yan
China PR
62' Wang Yan is the other player to make way and Yao is on in her place.
Song Duan
Wang Shanshan
China PR
61' Double substitution for China now and the first change sees Wang Shanshan replaced by Song.
61' GOOD CHANCE FOR CHINA! Italy give the ball away to Wang Shuang and she decides to have a go from long-range. Her effort is curling towards the top corner, but it sails just over the crossbar.
59' China are trying to move upfield as quickly as possible, but the pace is making their passing sloppy again which is letting Italy back onto the ball.
57' Giacinti puts a good, low cross into the box from the left wing and picks out Bartoli who takes her shot first time. She hits it well but Wu blocks it from close range. It bounces back to the defender but she uses her hand to bring it down and China have a free-kick.
55' VAR are having a check for a possible penalty to Italy. Giacinti was setting herself to take a shot when Zhang came across and tried to dispossess her. The forward went to ground under the challenge, but the check is over and there's no penalty.
53' China's passing has become sloppy once again and Liu Shanshan is the latest player to give away possession and set Italy off on the attack. Galli doesn't get far though as Yang blocks her run down the wing.
51' That goal looks to have knocked China's confidence as they give the ball away from the restart and allow Italy to go on the attack again. Bergamaschi tries to put an early cross into the box, but Lin clears it away.
A. Guagni
Assist
Italy
49' Guagni was being closed down quickly and did well to get her head up and square the ball to Galli to set up the goal.
A. Galli
Goal
Italy
49' GALLI DOUBLES THE LEAD! She was given a lot of room just outside the box when she received the ball and she hit her shot low and hard towards the goal. It went through a lot of players and beat Peng to nestle in the bottom corner. 2-0 Italy!
48' China have started the second half the same way the ended the first and are putting a lot of pressure on Italy at the minute without getting into the box.
46' Italy get us back underway for the second half!
Yang Li
Gu Yasha
China PR
46' China have decided to make their first change at the start of the second half. Gu comes off and Yang is on in her place.
Jia will be hoping that his side can pick up where they left off in the second half as they improved just before the break and if they continue to push forward with the same urgency, then they stand a good chance of getting back into the game. As for Italy, they started the game with high intensity but dropped off as half-time neared. They need to pass the ball around quicker and get their forward players involved more often to get the goal that would give them more control in the match.
Italy take a narrow 1-0 lead over China into half-time. Italy started the half brightly and thought they had the lead in the 10th minute, but Giacinti had drifted offside before she put the ball in the back of the net. She then did give her side the lead five minutes later though when Bartoli's smothered shot rolled under Peng and she fired the ball into the empty goal. China steadily improved throughout the half and Wang Yan forced a good save out of Giuliani, but otherwise, they haven't really troubled the Italian keeper.
45' + 4' HALF-TIME: ITALY 1-0 CHINA.
45' + 3' Wang Shuang plays a good ball out to Li Ying who's in a lot of space down the right wing. Her first touch isn't great as she moves into the box which just allows Bartoli to get across and block her shot.
45' + 1' Italy are starting to show their frustration after a long period without possession. Wang Shuang tries to play a throughball up to Li Ying but is caught late by Giugliano.
44' Some quick movement from Wang Shuang opens her body up and allows her to touch the ball into Gu's path as she runs to the far post. She sticks her leg out to reach it, but Guagni makes an important block to put it behind.
42' OFF THE POST! China have a free-kick on the right and Wang Shuang crosses it into the box. Li Ying gets ahead of her defenders and dives onto the ball to head it towards goal, but Wang Shanshan gets in the way and knocks it against the post instead.
41' Italy are stuck in their own half at the minute and they can't get hold of the ball long enough to get out. China have steadily improved in confidence and it's clear they want an equaliser before half-time.
A. Galli
C. Girelli
Italy
39' Italy make the first change of the game as Galli comes on to replace Girelli.
37' China are passing the ball around quicker and causing Italy a lot of problems at the minute. Their crosses into the box are letting them down at the minute though as they haven't been picking out their team-mates.
35' Gu cuts back inside to put a good cross into the near post from the right wing. Linari reacts quickest though and makes an important block to put it out for a corner.
33' GREAT SAVE BY PENG! Bergamaschi times her run perfectly to stay onside and drifts into the box from the right wing. She's one-on-one with Peng and tries to curl her effort around the keeper, but she does really well to palm the shot away.
31' Giacinti is left one-on-one with the goalkeeper once again, and just like before she keeps her cool and tries to slot her effort into the bottom corner of the net. This time, she can't get her angles right and sends it just wide of the post, but she had drifted offside once again.
30' Giacinti has scored five goals in her last eight appearances for Italy.
28' GREAT SAVE BY GIULIANI! The ball bounces to Wang Yan on the edge of the box and she hits it first time to send her shot is curling under the crossbar. Giuliani gets up well though to push the effort over the bar.
26' VAR are having a look at the incident to judge if China should have a penalty. It's only a short check though and the spot kick isn't awarded.
25' Li Ying has drifted out to the right again and she puts a good cross into the middle, looking for Wang Shuang. She ducked to make contact with the ball and was caught in the head by Gama's boot as the defender cleared it. China are asking for a penalty but the referee is letting play go on.
23' China look more comfortable with the ball now and are putting some pressure on Italy in the final third. Li Ying drifts out to the right to put a cross into the box, but Gama clears it in the middle.
21' The corner is passed to Bonansea and she tries to chip a cross over the China defenders and into Bergamaschi at the far post. She just overhits it though and Liu Shanshan sees it out of play.
19' China put together some really good build-up play to get the ball to Li Ying on the edge of the box. She's being tightly marked by Guagni though and can only hit her cross against the defender to win a corner.
17' China have been very sloppy in possession since the kick-off here and they keep playing themselves into trouble by giving the ball away needlessly.
V. Giacinti
Goal
Italy
15' GIACINTI PUTS ITALY AHEAD! Bartoli had the first chance but her shot was smothered by the goalkeeper. It rolled under Peng and into the middle of the box where Giacinti was waiting though and she fired the ball into the back of the empty net. 1-0 Italy!
13' GIACINTI COMES CLOSE! Zhang gives the ball straight to Giacinti with a sloppy pass and she sees the goalkeeper off her line. The forward quickly gets her shot away, but sends her effort just inches wide of the far post.
12' China are closing down Italy's midfielders high up the pitch to try and win back possession. When they do, they move the ball upfield with pace, but they haven't been able to get in behind their opponents yet.
10' ITALY HAVE A GOAL DISALLOWED! Girelli picks out Giacinti with a great throughball through the middle and she brings it in well with her first touch. She slots her effort calmly under Peng and into the bottom corner of the net, but the flag is rightly up for offside.
9' Guagni is forward from right-back and she puts a deep cross into the box to pick out Giacinti. The forward rises highest to reach it but she can't nod the ball down into Bonansea's pass to set up a chance for her.
7' Bergamaschi is given some space down the right wing and she puts a good cross into the six-yard box. The keeper doesn't come for it and Lin gets ahead of Bonansea to clear the danger.
5' Wang Shanshan pulls away from her defender on the edge of the box and whips a good cross into the near post. Li Ying is the closest to it but doesn't get to the ball before it goes out of play.
3' Italy have a free-kick which Giugliano swings into the box. China don't get across to clear it and Giacinti makes a run to the near post to reach it. It just bounces over her though and Peng comes off her line to collect it.
1' Peng gives the ball away cheaply from a goal-kick and gifts it straight to Bergamaschi. Luckily for the goalkeeper, she doesn't get her pass to Bonansea right and China win back possession.
1' Wang Shuang gets the game underway for China!
The teams are out on the pitch now, with kick-off just moments away.
Since they reached the World Cup final back in 1999, China have lost three of their last four knockout stage games at the tournament (W1), never emerging further than the quarter-final stage.
Jia Xiuquan, on the other hand, names an unchanged team to the one that drew with Spain in their final group game as he was clearly impressed with his side's performance that day.
Milena Bertolini makes just one change to the side that lost to Brazil last time out. Bergamaschi is the player that comes into the starting line-up and she replaces Galli, who drops down to the bench.

China, on the other hand, finished as one of the best third-placed teams, securing four points after beating South Africa and drawing with Spain.
