Internazionale v Sampdoria Live Commentary, 21/06/2020

2 - 1
R. Lukaku (10)
L. Martínez (33)
M. Thorsby (52)
Stadio Giuseppe Meazza

Inter make a decent start to getting back involved with the Serie A title race, then, while Sampdoria still have work to do to avoid relegation. With 12 games to go for both sides, there's still plenty of time left for them to decide their own fates. That's all for now. Goodbye!
Inter's win cements their position in third in Serie A, five points behind Lazio in second and six points ahead of Atalanta who trounced Sassuolo 4-1 earlier. Sampdoria stay 16th, a point above the drop zone.
Inter restart their league season with a fairly comfortable 2-1 win over Sampdoria. Inter were easily the better side in the first half, scoring through Lukaku and Martinez. Sampdoria woke up in the second half, pulling a goal back through Thorsby, but the visitors never really put Inter under any sustained pressure.
R. Vieira
Yellow Card
90' + 3' Inter keep the ball in the corner and Vieira makes a slightly desperate late challenge on Barella. Barella shows his dissatisfaction with the challenge, and Vieira's booked for it.
90' + 2' Yoshida holds off Sanchez and gives Inter a corner down their right. Sampdoria's comeback hopes look to have faded now.
R. Gagliardini
Yellow Card
90' Gagliardini goes down in Inter's box. It's not a penalty and the ref books him for simulation.
88' Now Inter blow a chance to seal the win! Lukaku sets Moses free down the right channel but the Nigerian can't keep his composure and fires way over.
87' Chance for Sampdoria! Leris takes the free-kick and goes for the near post, forcing Handanovic into a smart save to his left! The keeper can't hold it though and Inter scramble the ball away.
Borja Valero
Yellow Card
86' Valero is booked for bringing down Bereszynski a few yards from Inter's box. What can Sampdoria do with the free-kick?
86' Inter get a few more little chances. Sanchez receives a pass from Moses and shoots from the right of the box. A Sampdoria player gets in the way. Valero's follow-up is blocked too.
85' Sampdoria see off Inter's corner. The visitors aren't showing signs of grabbing an equaliser here but they've at least redeemed themselves after their poor first half.
A. Sánchez
L. Martínez
83' Martínez heads to the bench. His goal could well prove to be the difference here. Sanchez is on for him.
83' Inter win a corner off Colley. They'll make a change of their own first.
K. Askildsen
A. Bertolacci
82' Bertolacci's game is also done. Askildsen replaces him.
R. Vieira
K. Linetty
81' Sampdoria are preparing a third raft of changes. Linetty is replaced by Vieira.
80' Yoshida nods another Inter cross away. The Japanese centre-back has given Sampdoria some much needed authority in defence in this second half.
Borja Valero
C. Eriksen
78' Inter substitution. The influential Eriksen's game is done. Valero comes on for him.
77' Inter and Sampdoria exchange half-chances. Eriksen has another shot from distance blocked, while Murru fires over from range himself.
F. Bonazzoli
A. La Gumina
76' Sampdoria substitution. La Gumina is replaced by Bonazzoli.
75' Inter win a corner down their left. Eriksen plays a one-two with Biraghi and curls a cross in. Yoshida, who's been solid this half, puts his foot through it.
C. Biraghi
A. Young
73' Young also goes off and is replaced by Biraghi. Inter have now freshened up both of their wing-backs.
V. Moses
A. Candreva
73' Inter substitution. Moses replaces Candreva in a like-for-like change.
71' Depaoli takes on Ramirez's mantle straight away as he fouls Bastoni within seconds of coming on. Sampdoria have Inter pinned in their own half but aren't creating much.
F. Depaoli
G. Ramírez
69' Next off is Ramirez who has been irritating more than threatening to Inter's defenders. Depaoli comes on.
M. Léris
J. Jankto
69' Here are those Sampdoria changes. First, Jankto goes off. He's replaced by the French midfielder Leris.
68' Sampdoria get a free-kick down their left as Skriniar fouls La Gumina. The free-kick comes in and Colley powers a header over. The Gambian is worrying Inter at set-pieces.
66' Sampdoria are preparing a few players to come on. They've been playing a 3-5-2 to match Inter for much of this game. Let's see how Ranieri plans to change things.
M. Thorsby
Yellow Card
64' Thorsby gets booked for clattering into Bastoni in the centre of the pitch. The ref's starting to lose his patience with Sampdoria's constant fouling.
64' Inter are finding life harder now, for sure, but Sampdoria still haven't had a shot since Thorsby's goal.
63' Inter get another free-kick down their left. Eriksen and Young exchange a few passes before the ball's worked to Candreva who plays a Hail Mary pass down the middle. Audero catches it with ease.
61' Sampdoria are getting a little too aggressive now. Ramirez charges into Bastoni with venom and gives away a foul. Bastoni shrugs at the technical team at the bench.
59' Candreva floats in a cross from the right which Young takes down in the box. Bereszynski shepherds him away from goal and Young can't keep the ball in play.
57' Sampdoria defend the free-kick without much fuss. The game's starting to develop a nice bit of edge.
55' Inter look frustrated. Yoshida thumps an Inter cross out of Sampdoria's box. Martinez chases after the ball and Ramirez nudges him off the pitch in mid-air. Inter free-kick. The pair exchange some choice words.
53' That was Sampdoria's first shot on target. It looks like we have a game on our hands now! Inter's defending at that corner was poor.
M. Thorsby
52' GOAL! 2-1 SAMPDORIA! Sampdoria are back in this! Sampdoria take the corner short and find Colley who is entirely unmarked at the far post. The Gambian's thumping header rebounds off the crossbar and Thorsby sticks out a leg to poke it into the net!
51' Sampdoria win a corner down their left, their first of the game, and...
50' Eriksen is running the show here for Inter. The Dane pops a routine shot into the arms of Audero from outside the box.
49' Inter should make it 3-0! Eriksen lures Audero out wide with a run to the byline and cuts back to Lukaku who rolls his shot tamely wide! It looked easier for the Belgian to score there.
L. Martínez
Yellow Card
48' To illustrate the point, Martinez is booked for fouling Bertolacci in Inter's half. That's better from the visitors.
48' Sampdoria are pressing Inter with greater intensity now, making it harder for them to play out from the back. Ranieri must have given his side a rocket at the break.
46' Inter resume where they left off as Eriksen skips towards Sampdoria's box. The Dane has a go at goal but there's a white shirt in the way.
45' Inter get the second half underway. No changes at half-time.
A Sampdoria comeback seems highly unlikely. The visitors have won only one of their last 17 Serie A away meetings against Inter, a 2-1 victory back in April 2017. Still, Ranieri's side need to put up more of a fight in the next 45 minutes.
Inter have been very comfortable and are deservedly two goals to the good. Sampdoria haven't been able to cope with the home side's control of the game. It'll take some turnaround in the second half for this not to end in an Inter win.
45' Sampdoria get two shots! They're half-chances at best, though. First Jankto fires high and wide from Yoshida's pass forward, then Ramirez snatches at a loose ball as Inter over-complicate things at the back and blazes over.
43' The offside flag goes up against Martinez as he looks to get on the end of Candreva's ball forward.
41' Inter get another corner down their right. Eriksen fires it in and Skriniar can't keep his header down. The home side are well on top.
39' The play gets broken up with a few more fouls. The latest is Gagliardini on Ramirez. Inter won't mind this at all.
37' Sampdoria are yet to have a shot in this game. You wouldn't be surprised if they don't get one all match.
35' Sampdoria are getting precious few chances to create anything. Ramirez can't get the ball and fouls Young in Inter's half.
A. Candreva
33' That was great awareness by Candreva who knew Martinez was all alone in the box. Sampdoria's defence went AWOL. The next hour could be a slog for them.
L. Martínez
33' GOAL! 2-0 INTER! Martinez makes it two and this game already seems over for Sampdoria. Lukaku teases Jankto at the right of the box and waits for Candreva to arrive. Candreva receives Lukaku's pass inside and crosses first-time for Martinez, who has an easy finish.
32' Jankto fouls Candreva in Sampdoria's half. What can Inter make of this?
30' Sampdoria win a foul and a rare chance to get out of their half. Audero booms it forward and the visitors get a throw. It ends in a free-kick for Inter. A poor show.
28' Lukaku blasts an effort over from inside the box thanks to Eriksen's clever dummy of Skriniar's pass. Inter have had 79% possession of the ball so far. It feels like more.
27' Martinez chases down a ball over the top and cuts it back from the byline, hoping to find a teammate. Sampdoria clear. Inter look menacing.
26' Eriksen and Martinez put a lovely quick one-two together but the attack breaks down. No matter - Inter come again and Candreva flashes a shot wide from distance. That wasn't too far off.
24' Inter win the first corner of the game down their right. It's taken too quickly and needs re-taking. Eriksen tries again and de Vrij has two shots chased down. Sampdoria force Inter out, for now at least.
A. Bertolacci
Yellow Card
22' Bertolacci gets the game's first yellow card for leaving a high boot on Barella in a 50/50 challenge. No complaints.
20' La Gumina is looking very lonely up front for Sampdoria. The visitors are dropping so deep that he's getting very little support when they do win the ball.
18' La Gumina gamely looks to race onto a throughball into Inter's half but Bastoni and de Vrij have it covered, leaving the striker on the turf. Play continues.
16' La Gumina wins a free-kick as de Vrij is over-eager in closing him down. This game has almost entirely been in Sampdoria's half so far.
14' Inter go back on the attack quickly. Barella finds Candreva in the box but Candreva drags his shot wide of the left-hand post.
12' Inter leading is no surprise. They've been in the lead for the most minutes in Serie A this season (1024). But can they keep it up for the full 90 minutes?
C. Eriksen
10' Eriksen claims the assist but a few players were involved in the build-up to that goal. Inter will be glad for the early goal.
R. Lukaku
10' GOAL! 1-0 INTER! Lukaku opens the scoring for Inter! It's a lovely goal too, as Inter cut through Sampdoria through a flurry of passes which ends in the Belgian slotting home from the centre of the box. He takes a knee to acknowledge the Black Lives Matter movement.
8' Bastoni finds Lukaku in the centre of the box and his shot is blocked, as is Eriksen's follow up. Sampdoria can barely get out of their half for the time being.
7' Inter are starting to assert themselves. Young passes inside to Eriksen, and the Dane has a pop at goal from outside the box. Audero makes a decent save.
5' Inter are getting settled on the ball at the moment while Sampdoria seem content to sit deep for now. You can't blame them for taking a few minutes to get back into the swing of things.
3' Inter start the game on the front foot. Barella tries a throughball down the right for Candreva but the wing-back is caught offside. It's a shame for Inter, as Eriksen had put the ball in the net from Candreva's cross.
1' And we're off!
The two sides are out on the San Siro pitch. Inter are in their traditional black and blue shirts and black shorts. Sampdoria are wearing their white and blue away kit.
Inter should feel confident of getting back to winning ways. They've won their last five meetings with Sampdoria, their longest current winning run against any side in Serie A. There should be goals here though: Sampdoria's last four matches have seen an average of 4.8 goals per game. Let's see what happens!
Inter make just one change from their 1-1 draw with Napoli in the Coppa Italia semi-finals last week. Gagliardini comes in for the injured Brozovic. Sampdoria are much-changed from their 2-1 victory over Verona back in March. Their veteran forward Fabio Quagliarella is missing with a calf injury so La Gumina ploughs his own furrow up front.

Inter's opponents here Sampdoria have to get back to work at securing top-flight safety. Claudio Ranieri's team return from the break 16th in the table, just a point above Lecce in the relegation zone. They need to keep the positive results coming to avoid a nervy end to the season.
Inter are back at San Siro for their first Serie A match in over three months. Antonio Conte's side had their title hopes bruised by consecutive losses to Juventus and Lazio before the enforced break. A quick return to winning ways would help keep them in the picture.
