That's all from San Siro today, so thank you for joining us. Goodbye!
Inter meet Verona, Sampdoria, Bologna and Fiorentina in their next four fixtures, so may expect to continue their strong start against modest opposition, while Genoa take on Napoli at Marassi next Sunday.
The defence of Inter's Scudetto gets off to the best possible start for new manager Simone Inzaghi, as his impressive side steamroller a lacklustre Genoa outfit on the opening day of the Serie A season. Four goals proved just reward for the home side's dominance, which continues their long unbeaten streak versus the Ligurians. Particularly pleasing for the Nerazzurri will be the superb link-up play between summer signings Calhanoglu and Dzeko, who already look like a long-term partnership.
90' + 4' FULL-TIME: INTER 4-0 GENOA.
90' + 2' Favilli goes down easily under a challenge from the already-booked Vecino, and a free-kick is awarded, but the referee is not interested in handing down further punishment to the Uruguayan midfielder.
90' The long-absent Inter tifosi are bringing out the old 'Ole' chant as their team leave Genoa chasing shadows. They have certainly enjoyed their return to the Meazza today!
A. Vidal
87' Vidal played an accurate high ball for Dzeko to latch onto with a powerful header inside the area. A goal and an assist since arriving from the bench for the Chilean star!
E. Džeko
87' THAT'S FOUR! Dzeko gets his debut goal with a trademark soaring header from just inside the box, from an excellent ball by Vidal. The home side are in cruise mode now. Inter 4-0 Genoa.
D. Dumfries
A. Bastoni
84' A rapturous welcome from the Inter fans for one of the stars of Euro 2020, as Dumfries comes on for the final few minutes to replace European champion Bastoni.
81' Against his parent club, Vanheusden has a right-footed shot from a tight angle on the right blocked, as Genoa have a rare chance to break their long scoring drought against Inter.
80' Satriano dwells on the ball when an opportunity to shoot from just inside the area arises. Inter are in complete control.
M. Vecino
Yellow Card
78' Within a minute of his arrival, Vecino is booked for a mistimed challenge.
M. Vecino
N. Barella
77' Following his assist for the third goal, Barella comes off for Vecino, who slots seamlessly into midfield.
M. Satriano
H. Çalhanoğlu
77' Calhanoglu receives an ovation after a fine Serie A debut for the champions, he is replaced by Satriano.
N. Barella
74' Barella skilfully readjusts his feet in the six-yard box to cut a loose ball back to Vidal for Inter's killer third goal.
A. Vidal
74' Inter extend their lead! Dzeko has a curling shot tipped away by the diving Sirigu, but the ball breaks to the feet of Barella, who cutely back-heels into Vidal's path. The former Juventus man can hardly miss from close range and that is Inter's third. Inter 3-0 Genoa.
F. Melegoni
S. Sturaro
71' Ballardini takes advantage of another cooling break to distribute instructions to his tiring Genoa players and introduce Melegoni for Sturaro, who is on a yellow card.
A. Vidal
S. Sensi
69' Vidal is fully fit again after a difficult 2020-21 campaign, so he replaces Sensi in the Inter midfield.
F. Dimarco
I. Perišić
69' Perisic has put a good shift in on the left flank today, and he will now be replaced by Dimarco, who excelled on loan at Verona last term.
67' Sabelli's cross from the right is athletically headed away by the imperious Skriniar.
S. Sturaro
Yellow Card
66' Barella is felled near the centre circle by a crude hack from Sturaro, who deservedly receives a booking.
63' Calhanoglu gifts the ball to Pandev in the Genoa half, and the veteran striker strides forward to play a precise ball to the advancing Rovella, but his effort goes wide.
60' Sensi's chipped through-ball creates concern in the Genoa defence, but Brozovic is ruled offside in any case.
57' Rovella managed to get a snap-shot off from inside the box, but finds his effort blocked in front of goal. That was Genoa's best chance of the second half.
56' Perisic is involved again, as he eludes his marker to cut back for Calhanoglu, who fires into the net - only for the whistle to immediately blow for offside.
A. Favilli
Y. Kallon
54' Kallon has worked hard but lacked a little composure in the box, so is replaced by Favilli up front.
54' Dzeko and Calhanoglu combine again, as the former demonstrates his immense gift for link play by chesting the ball down for the latter to strike from the edge of the box. However, he is charged down brilliantly by Vanheusden. Great stuff!
52' Perisic lofts another appetising cross in from the left, but Barella just gets under it as it eludes Sirigu and Genoa escape.
50' De Vrij concedes a corner, but Genoa are unable to make anything of it.
48' Genoa are stroking the ball around at the back, trying to establish their own rhythm in the second period - Inter are relatively disinterested and have dropped off a touch.
46' The players are back out for the second half and Genoa have made some much-needed changes.
S. Sabelli
A. Cambiaso
46' Wing-back Cambiaso is the third man hauled off by Ballardini, as he is replaced by Sabelli.
F. Bianchi
46' Hernani is brought off, to be replaced by Bianchi.
L. Serpe
D. Biraschi
46' Biraschi has been run ragged in the first half, so Serpe replaces him at the back.
Genoa are unbeaten in their last five Serie A season openers, but have a mountain to climb to maintain that run in Milan, as they trail by two goals and the champions look in the mood for more. Dzeko and particularly Calhanoglu have been motivated performers, having both left their former clubs in some acrimony, and it has barely been noticable that the iconic 'Lu-La' strike partnership of last season is no more.
Any thoughts of a hangover from the departures of Conte and Lukaku have been quashed by a dominant Inter performance during the first 45 minutes of the new league season. The Nerazzurri have been fluid and look dangerous from all quarters, while Genoa seem stunned into submission and are unable to pose much of a threat in the final third. That said, young Kallon has had two presentable opportunities - each of which he has spurned.
45' + 1' Inter seem to be playing keep-ball until half-time, when Perisic runs on to a Brozovic through-ball and slots under Sirigu. However, the Croatian winger is ruled marginally offside.
44' Kallon turns and shoots from close range - left in acres of space by the Inter defence - but again his attempt is not struck cleanly and drifts just wide of Hanadanovic's upright. Pandev played a key role in the build-up.
42' The game has slowed to walking pace in humid conditions, which may allow Genoa to get a foothold in proceedings. Sturaro manages to advance into the Inter box but is quickly shut down.
40' Bastoni again pops up in an advanced position, being involved in Inter's final-third build-up. He is effectively a spare centre-back against a Genoa's so-far meek attack.
38' Criscito desperately intervenes - but with impressive precision - as Darmian thunders through on goal from the right. Another Inter corner to come.
36' Another Brozovic attempt from the corner sails wide by way of a deflection.
34' A long diagonal ball finds Perisic on the left, but his cut-back from deep is eventually cleared by Genoa. In the aftermath, Sensi picks up the ball and charges towards goal but his shot is blocked for a corner.
32' Ballardini looks a detached figure on the touchline, but must be wondering how his Genoa side can get back into this game. They have barely laid a glove on Inter so far and remain on the ropes.
30' Pandev is lucky to escape a booking after he collides awkwardly with Barella in midfield. Inter build another attack from the free-kick, but Dzeko is wasteful when on the edge of the box.
28' Brozovic's right-footed shot from outside the box goes close, but just misses to the right.
27' After a brief cooling break in sweltering Milan, the game is back under way, and Bastoni finds himself free in the area only to have his unlikely attempt at a goal blocked by Biraschi. The resultant corner ends up in Sirigu's hands.
24' Dzeko contorts himself to get off a looping shot from just outside the area, which clips the top of Sirigu's crossbar - Darmian did well to find space on the right during the build-up. Surely the scoring hasn't ended yet!
22' Veteran striker Dzeko will hope to add a goal to his assist upon his 200th Serie A appearance today. The summer signing from Roma has previously been involved in eight league goals against Genoa - his best record versus any Italian club.
20' Sirigu is forced to intervene with a flying fist, as Perisic's cross from deep on the left flank dips dangerously under the Genoa bar. Inter are dictating events once more.
18' Genoa look a little shellshocked - understandably - so try to keep possession in their own half for a spell. Inter are pressing them well though, so they are struggling to break out.
E. Džeko
15' Debutant Dzeko played his part in the build-up for Calhanoglu's goal, laying the ball off to give the Turkish playmaker time to strike.
H. Çalhanoğlu
14' INTER FIND A SECOND! Calhanoglu finds himself in space and fires home with precision from just outside the box to give the champions a two-goal lead. The former Milan man was well found by Dzeko. The Nerazzurri have begun this season as they finished the last - like a train! Inter 2-0 Genoa.
10' The Inter tifosi may be reduced in number but are still in full voice, as Barella and Calhanoglu combine to tee up a Brozovic right-footer from the edge of the box. His driven shot is tipped wide by Sirigu!
8' A rare chance to relieve the pressure as Genoa break, but Kallon scuffs his effort well wide of the right post - the Grifone's first attempt.
H. Çalhanoğlu
7' A superb start to his debut for Calhanoglu, whose pinpoint corner hung invitingly for Skriniar to power home the opener.
M. Škriniar
6' THE CHAMPIONS LEAD! Skriniar rises high to head powerfully past a stranded Sirigu from Calhanoglu's in-swinging corner. A suitable reward for Inter's high-tempo start to the match. Inter 1-0 Genoa!
4' Inter setting the pace so far, with all of the ball in the Genoa defensive third. They earn a corner on the right side, to be taken by Calhanoglu.
D. Criscito
Yellow Card
2' Criscito picks up an early booking for the visitors, so will have to take care for the next 80-plus minutes.
1' We are off and under way for a new season at San Siro - and the fans are back!
SUBS: Federico Marchetti, Stefano Sabelli, Andrea Masiello, Andrea Favilli, Filippo Melegoni, Caleb Ekuban, Flavio Bianchi, Aleksander Buksa, Laurens Serpe, Kevin Agudelo, Steeve-Mike Eyango, Manolo Portanova.
GENOA (3-5-2): Salvatore Sirigu; Zinho Vanheusden, Davide Biraschi, Domenico Criscito; Stefano Sturaro, Milan Badelj, Nicolo Rovella, Hernani, Andrea Cambiaso; Goran Pandev, Yahya Kallon.
SUBS: Alex Cordaz, Stefan Radu, Denzel Dumfries, Matias Vecino, Aleksandar Kolarov, Andrea Ranocchia, Lucien Agoume, Arturo Vidal, Federico Dimarco, Danilo D’Ambrosio, Martin Satriano, Andrea Pinamonti.
INTER (3-4-2-1): Samir Handanovic; Milan Skriniar, Stefan De Vrij, Alessandro Bastoni; Matteo Darmian, Nicolo Barella, Marcelo Brozovic, Ivan Perisic; Hakan Calhanoglu, Stefano Sensi; Edin Dzeko.
For Inter, new signing Edin Dzeko replaces last season's star man Romelu Lukaku up front, but Lautaro Martinez will not join him, as the Copa America-winner must serve a suspension. Therefore, Dzeko's fellow new boy Hakan Calhanoglu - who made the switch from city rivals Milan last month - will slot in behind the ex-Roma forward in a supporting role. The visitors start freshly-signed goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu behind a three-man defence, which features Inter loanee Zinho Vanheusden, while Pandev is joined by young Yahya Kallon - at 20, nearly half his age - in attack.
Genoa, meanwhile, have failed to register even a solitary strike against Inter throughout their last six encounters - representing their longest-ever run without netting against any top-flight opponent. In fact, their last league goal against the Nerazzurri came back in February 2018, scored by former Inter forward Goran Pandev, who - aged 38 - celebrates a new contract by starting today.
The champions welcome Genoa to San Siro having won their last six Serie A matches against them by an aggregate score of 21-0 and are unbeaten in 17 games when they have started the season at home - a record dating back to 1987! Not only that, but Inter have also won each of their last 16 league fixtures on home soil.
As the hosts' former coach Antonio Conte rode off into the sunset shortly after securing the title, Inter are now overseen by ex-Lazio boss Simone Inzaghi, who will seek to secure successive Scudetti come the spring of 2022. In the Genoa dugout, Davide Ballardini hopes to continue the fine job he has done so far, after leading the Grifone to safety with room to spare last term.
Inter are aiming to mount a successful defence of their 19th Scudetto, won in May, and start their 2021-22 campaign against a Genoa side which, last season, flirted with the drop before finishing safely in mid-table following a managerial change.
Hello and welcome to live coverage of the opening Serie A fixture between Inter and Genoa at Milan's iconic San Siro!
