East Bengal Mohun Bagan I-League 2017
Arch-rivals East Bengal and Mohun Bagan meet in the grand finale of the Calcutta Football League on Sunday in Siliguri.....

Kolkata giants East Bengal and Mohun Bagan come face to face for the first time this season in the Calcutta Football League (CFL) on Sunday. The derby match is a virtual final where the winner takes the trophy along with the bragging rights.

Both the rivals are tied on 22 points from 8 matches ahead of the big match. East Bengal have a slight advantage as they are ahead on goal difference. A draw would ensure they win their 39th CFL title.

Coming off a morale-boosting 5-0 win over Subhash Bhowmick’s Tollygunge Agragami, Khalid Jamil’s men will be brimming with confidence ahead of the magnum opus clash. Mohun Bagan too had won their previous encounter against Peerless but it was a hard-fought victory.

Khalid Jamil had experimented with his side in the last encounter with Gabriel Fernandes partnering Willis Plaza upfront and Tanmoy Ghosh replacing in-form Samad Ali Mullick in the right-back position. India international Nikhil Poojary too made his way into the starting XI in place of Brandon Vanlalremdika. Poojary got his name into the score sheet thereby cementing his place in the starting lineup. Brandon is likely to sit out against the Green and Maroons.

Carlyle Mitchell too was rested and in his absence, experienced Indian duo of Gurwinder Singh and Arnab Mondal did a fairly decent job. But Mitchell is likely to be back in the team against Mohun Bagan. They will be buoyed by the fact that striker Willis Plaza finally looks to have regained his long-lost form. He has four goals in his kitty in the last two matches which included a hat-trick against Tollygunge.

Ahead of his first derby match as a coach, Khalid sounded confident and he refused to offer any excuse. "Whether it rains or not it doesn't matter to me. It is not under my control. Whatever the conditions are, my team will play best possible football and try to win the league."

Mohun Bagan also have enjoyed a flowery journey in the CFL after many years. The attacking duo of Stephane Bayi Kamo and Ansumana Kromah has produced 11 goals so far in the league and are all set to guide Bagan to glory this season. Shankarlal Chakraborty will field the best possible XI with Shilton D’Silva and Arijit Bagui likely to return to the starting XI. The hero against Mohammedan Sporting, Azharuddin Mullick, too will start ahead of Nikhil Kadam on the left flank.

The Bagan coach went on to point out that this is the second time in the history of CFL that a derby in the last match of the tournament will be the title decider.
