That concludes our commentary of the LaLiga fixture between Deportivo Alaves and Real Madrid! We hope you’ve enjoyed it!
Alaves will be at home again next weekend, when they host Mallorca. Real Madrid’s travels continue as they visit Levante next Sunday.
A cagey first half was met by a scintillating second, which saw the visitors hit the back of the net four times, while limiting the hosts to a single strike, scored from the penalty spot after Guidetti was taken down by Courtois inside the 18-yard box. Alaves were unable to keep things as tight after the restart as the individual quality of Real Madrid shone through, with Benzema decisive inside the opposition’s penalty area. Modric looked his creative best despite his age and Hazard made his mark despite being withdrawn just after the hour in an overall positive showing from Ancelotti’s side. Alaves showed promising signs early but will have to do more in attack if they wish to stave off relegation once again.
D. Alaba
90' + 2' Alaba's debut is marked with an assist as his accurate cross found the head of Vinicius for Real Madrid's fourth goal of the evening.
Vinícius Júnior
90' + 2' VINICIUS MAKES IT FOUR! The winger gets on the ball on the left-hand side and plays a simple square pass to Asensio, allowing him the necessary time to get into the penalty area. The newly substituted Asensio then finds Alaba, whose simple chip into the six-yard box is met with a thumping header by Vinicius! 4-1!
90' + 1' The fourth official indicates three minutes will be added to the end of the 90 for stoppages.
L. Jović
K. Benzema
88' The third Real Madrid change is in attack as Benzema is given a rest - allowing Jovic to stretch his legs.
F. Valverde
88' Isco is introduced with two minutes remaining, with Valverde the man to make way.
L. Modrić
88' Ancelotti makes three substitutions late in the match, with the three points more or less secured. The first sees a change in midfield, with Asensio replacing Modric.
86' Alaba’s cross from the byline is headed to the edge of the penalty area by Laguardia, who presents it directly to Modric. The midfielder takes a touch with his chest before lashing a shot through a crowd of bodies, with Lejeune getting an important block to the close-range effort.
84' Real Madrid have avoided defeat in their opening game of a LaLiga season in every campaign since August 2008 vs Deportivo de La Coruna at Riazor (1-2). Since then, they have collected eight wins and four draws in 12 season openers, keeping a clean sheet in eight of them.
Toni Moya
82' A late Alaves change sees Moya replace Pina in midfield.
80' Loum steps inside to open up some space ahead of Modric and drives a left-footed strike from 30 yards out which bobbles up against the chest of Courtois - forcing the goalkeeper to scramble for the rebound. It’s not dealt with particularly well, but that strike was never going to trouble the keeper significantly.
78' Alaba overlaps the run of Vinicius and receives a pass inside the penalty area, but his acute-angle cross is picked out by Pacheco who was waiting at the near post.
77' Madrid will look to see out the result with just under 15 minutes left, with a confident 3-1 victory establishing Ancelotti’s early intent in the league. The visitors have done the difficult part, and will rely on keeping possession in midfield to drain the clock.
75' Modric takes another Real Madrid corner short, this time with Vinicius the intended end as the winger gets into the penalty area and curls an effort to the far post, which doesn’t miss the target by much.
73' Vinicius drives down the left and crosses it into the penalty area low looking for the run of Rodrygo, which prompts Lejeune to step forward and hammer it behind for a corner.
72' Alaves have won only one of their last seven LaLiga season openers (D3 L3), 1-0 vs Levante in August 2019.
70' Guidetti stands over a free-kick after a handball call goes against Militao, but the striker smashes his delivery against the wall, which protects Courtois from getting involved.
G. Bale
68' Rodrygo is in for Bale as Ancelotti replaces both of his wingers in a short space of time.
Iván Martín
Edgar Méndez
68' Substitution Edgar Antonio Méndez Ortega Iván Martín Núñez
F. Pellistri
Luis Rioja
68' Mendez will play no further part in the match as Pellistri comes on to replace him.
Vinícius Júnior
E. Hazard
66' Ancelotti makes a change after conceding as Hazard is brought off for Vinicius.
Penalty Goal
65' GOAL! Joselu smashes his penalty into the left corner, sending Courtois the opposite way in the process! Alaves have pulled one back - 3-1!
T. Courtois
Yellow Card
64' PENALTY TO ALAVES! Guidetti breaks into the penalty area in possession and draws out Courtois, who rushes off his line and brings the striker down with a trailing leg! It’s a yellow card for the goalkeeper, who has given the hosts a lifeline from the spot!
K. Benzema
62' 3-0 REAL MADRID! Valverde is able to surge through the midfield completely unmarked, entering the penalty area without defenders in the vicinity. The Uruguay international squares a pass for Benzema, whose first shot is blocked by a falling Pacheco, before the rebound is buried by the Madrid captain!
61' All of the confidence displayed by Alaves in the first half has disappeared as Calleja’s side have looked unable to keep possession of the ball as they were once able to. Two fantastic goals by Real Madrid have rocked the hosts and forced them to attack, though they are finding it much more difficult to win back the ball.
M. Loum
Pere Pons
59' Loum comes on for Pons as the hosts make two changes at one time.
J. Guidetti
Manu García
59' Guidetti replaces Garcia as Alaves have no option but to attack.
L. Modrić
56' Modric's creative excellence is on display yet again with a fantastic assist, picking out the run of Nacho from deep on the left wing.
56' NACHO MAKES IT 2-0 MADRID! A quick corner-kick from Modric is taken to Hazard, who passes to Valverde on the outside of the penalty area. The Uruguay midfielder returns it back to the wing for Modric, whose teasing cross to the edge of the six-yard box is met by a diving Nacho, who turns it past Pacheco!
55' Garcia whips the free-kick in to the edge of the six-yard box, but Courtois steps through the crowd and manages to get a strong punch to the cross.
G. Bale
Yellow Card
53' Bale gets into trouble with the referee after his high boot catches the top of Duarte’s foot. It’s a yellow card for the winger, and a real chance for Alaves to trouble Courtois from the ensuing set-piece.
52' Mendez manages to corral Joselu’s flicked pass inside the penalty area after pressure from Alaba, but his eventual cross is a weak one which is dealt with easily by a well-positioned Nacho.
50' Alaves have it all to do as they go a goal behind at home. It won’t be easy for Calleja’s side, as they managed less than a goal a game last season. Joselu hasn’t been involved enough to make a difference, which does not bode well for the Babazorros.
E. Hazard
48' Hazard makes an impact in the opening game of the season, as his deft touch set Benzema up for the opening goal.
K. Benzema
48' REAL MADRID TAKE THE LEAD! Vazquez gets on the end of a Bale cross at the far post and immediately passes it inside for Hazard. The winger flicks the ball up between his legs, teeing up Benzema for a volley, which the striker takes with aplomb! 1-0 to the visitors!
46' Real Madrid get the match restarted from the kick-off!
Real Madrid have a wealth of options on the bench ready to be introduced, with Isco, Asensio and Jovic all ready to make the difference in the second half. It’s been too slow for the visitors, who look like they could use an injection of fresh legs to help pick the lock. A point won’t be enough for Ancelotti, who will demand his side push further and further up the pitch in the second, which could be to the host’s benefit. On-loan winger from Manchester United Pellistri could be key late in the match with his pace, while the introduction of Guidetti could aid set-pieces.
A goalless first half at the Mendizorroza comes to a close as neither side is able to do enough to beat the goalkeeper. The hosts were organised and disciplined in attack, turning that rigidity into attack with pacey counter-attacks on occasion. Rioja and Joselu have been busy, but despite that - Courtois has remained largely untroubled. Madrid have seen more than 55% possession, but slow and ponderous build-ups have allowed their opposition to sit into a familiar shape and repel the danger. It’s been an even contest in the Basque Country, despite the two sides’ league finishes last season.
45' + 1' The fourth official indicates one minute will be added to the end of the half for stoppages.
45' Alaba strikes a free-kick from 30 yards out with intent, looking to hit the target but the newly acquired left-back fails to trouble the goalkeeper, sending his effort some way over the crossbar.
43' Alavés’ Javier Calleja has only won one of his five LaLiga games as a manager against Real Madrid (D2 L2), 1-0 for Villarreal in January 2019, while drawing the two at home by the same scoreline (2-2).
41' Bale puts a cross into the penalty with the outside of his boot for Benzema, but Laguardia does just enough to put the striker off. It’s cleared to Alaba stationed on the edge of the 18-yard box, but a wild volley comes nowhere close to hitting the target.
39' PONS GOES OVER! Alaba commits himself up the pitch as Real Madrid lose possession, giving Alaves a chance to counter through Mendez. The winger drives down the pitch and chips it into the penalty area for Rioja, whose header is blocked by Militao. Pons gets to the rebound with a toe poke, but the midfielder sends it over the crossbar from close range!
37' Bale steps up and strikes the free-kick with venom but it’s put too close to Pacheco, who is able to take the sting out of the shot before catching it confidently.
Manu García
Yellow Card
35' Garcia is booked for an awkward and mistimed challenge on Benzema in midfield, which gives Real Madrid a chance to put pressure on Pacheco from a set-piece.
34' Modric takes a free-kick from the left into the penalty area, where it’s met by a confident clearing header. It’s put as far as Valverde outside the 18-yard box, who smashes a volley that sails high over the crossbar.
33' Militao’s sprayed pass forward finds Benzema, who brings it down with skill and works enough room to curl a shot to the far post. It’s a good effort from the Madrid captain, but it misses the target narrowly.
31' Bale fizzes a cross into the penalty area after cutting inside ahead of Duarte, but Pacheco steps off his line and catches the delivery with confidence.
29' Madrid are finding it difficult to break down the Alaves block, with Calleja instructing 10 men to sit behind the ball in defence. The ball movement from the visitors hasn’t been fast enough to put them under pressure with a half-hour gone in the contest.
27' Mendez is down holding his leg after winning the ball back from Vazquez on the left wing. A clash of shins has left the Alaves forward feeling the pain, but his side have won a free-kick for his efforts.
25' Alaves look to have changed shape, sending Joselu up-top by himself while Mendez drops back onto the left wing. With Rioja on the right and Garcia in the middle, both Pons and Pina will step back and look to shield the back four.
23' Aguirregabiria floats a hopeful cross to the far post from deep on the right-hand side, which goes high above the head of Mendez, as Vazquez shields it behind for a goal-kick.
22' Again Bale looks to trouble Pacheco as he cuts inside to work some space ahead of Pina before lashing a strike that misses the far post by a considerable distance.
21' Bale takes a strike from long range looking to sneak it into the near post, but the Wales international is unable to hit the target.
20' Alaves have won two of their last six LaLiga games against Real Madrid (L4), as many wins as in their previous 26 matches against them in the competition (W2 D2 L22).
18' Madrid win the ball back high up the pitch after a turnover forced by Casemiro, who finds Modric with a forward pass immediately. The Croatia international then tees Hazard up for a shot, but the winger can only wrap his long-range shot around the far post and out for a goal-kick.
16' Rioja reaches a long, ranging pass from Pons in midfield and brings it down well on the right, but Alaba comes across confidently and manages to get a touch to the ball - winning his side a goal-kick.
14' Hazard looks to wriggle free from two markers on the left-hand side but instead drops it back for Alaba, who is forced to turn around and pass it behind him to Nacho. It’s been slow and ponderous in the build-up for Real Madrid today, who seem to be lacking a bit of incision.
12' A promising attack for Alaves comes to an end as Joselu was unable to hold his run, straying just offside while trying to get on the end of a Pons pass. It’s another warning sign for the Madrid defence, who haven’t looked imperious thus far.
10' Play is brought to a halt as Nacho catches Joselu on the side of the head with an elbow during an aerial duel - sending the striker to the ground in a heap. It’s a painful one for the talisman, who will get some treatment before returning to the action.
8' Bale plays a pass through into the penalty area for Benzema to latch onto, but a sliding Lejeune challenge puts it beyond the striker’s reach, while avoiding a potential corner.
6' Rioja brings down a cross-field switch and immediately cuts inside before firing a low, driven shot that stings the palms of Courtois, who eventually makes the save.
4' Benzema looks for the one-two with Valverde on the edge of the penalty area, but an intelligent interception from Pina alleviates the pressure.
2' Garcia puts an early cross from the right to the far post for Mendez, who puts his header wide of the target despite having a free run at the delivery.
1' Alaves get the match underway from the kick-off!
Ancelotti’s XI starts with a familiar face in goal as Courtois gets the start, while it’s a LaLiga debut for Alba at left-back - alongside Militao, Nacho and Vazquez in defence. Modric, Casemiro and Valverde reprise their roles in midfield while both Hazard and Bale feature behind Benzema in the attack.
Pacheco starts between the posts for Alaves behind a four-man defence consisting of Duarte, Lejeune, Laguardia and Aguirregabiria. Rioja and Garcia will operate down the flanks with Pine and Pons dictating midfield, while a two-man strike partnership between Mendez and Joselu will look to test the Real Madrid defence.

With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let's take a look at how the two sides will be lining up - starting with our hosts!
Back for the second time as coach of Real Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti will be tasked with going one better than last year and winning LaLiga outright, after a campaign that saw Los Blancos held without a trophy. High-profile departures marked a busy summer for Madrid, who completed the signing of David Alaba before parting ways with both Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos.
Having avoided relegation by just four points last season, coach Javier Calleja will be hoping his Alaves side can do enough for a mid-table finish. The Babazorros managed six wins in 19 matches in the 2020/21 campaign at the Mendizorrotza, though it’s been three years since today’s hosts have gotten the better of Real Madrid in the Basque Country (a 1-0 win in 2018).
