The referee blows his whistle for the final time and the Chievo fans go crazy! It may only be the first game of the season, but that's a big win for them, and it's one that could prove pivotal later in the campaign. As for Inter, they performed poorly at both ends of the pitch and can't have any complaints with the scoreline. It's clear to see that, even with a plethora of talented players at his disposal, De Boer has a big job on his hands.
FULL-TIME: CHIEVO 2-0 INTER
It's all Inter at the moment as attempt to carve out one last chance on goal, but, as has been the case all evening, it just isn't working for them. They've lacked the fluidity and intensity needed to challenge Chievo, whose well-organised and resolute back line have had an easy time against De Boer's stuttering Nerazzurri.
Inter are desperately pushing forward as they try to find a way back into the game at this late stage, but it really isn't working for them and Chievo are finding it easy to hang on. Nagatomo breaks into the right-hand side of the penalty area and heads towards the near post before looking to shoot, but Sorrentino, who has been excellent today, is there to cut out the danger with a diving save at the feet of the Japanese full-back.
The fourth official has indicated that there will be four minutes of added time.
The resulting set-piece initially seems to trouble the Inter defence before bouncing out to Cesar, who attempts to test Handanovic with a thumping, 30-yard strike that, unsurprisingly, sails comfortably over the top of the crossbar.
Great save by Handanovic! The free-kick is floated into the middle of the Inter penalty area, where it finds Inglese, who sends an excellent header towards goal that Handanovic is just about able to tip over the top of the crossbar and out for a corner. Chievo are knocking on the door again!
G. Kondogbia
Yellow Card
Internazionale
Kondogbia and Cacciatore battle for the ball deep down the right wing, but the Frenchman is unable to keep up with the Chievo full-back and ends up dragging him to the ground, resulting in a free-kick for the hosts in a dangerous position and a yellow card for the midfielder.
V. Parigini
V. Birsa
Chievo
Chievo have made their last change of the night, with Parigini coming on to replace Birsa, who receives a standing ovation as he makes his way off the pitch.
And now Ranocchia goes close! Inter keep putting pressure on Chievo and quickly win the ball back deep inside the hosts' half of the pitch. An almight strike from Brozovic comes flying into the penalty area and is just about saved by Sorrentino, but he can only parry the ball into the path of Ranocchia. However, the centre-back is quickly put under pressure by yellow shirts, who ensure that his follow-up sails over the top of the crossbar.
Vital save by Sorrentino! Perisic picks up the ball over on the left-hand side of the Chievo penalty area and immediately lifts a lovely cross-cum-shot over to the far post, but the Sorrentino is just about able to claw the ball away from the onrushing figure of Icardi, who surely would have nodded it into the back of the net if he had been given the chance to do so.
They may be two goals up, but Chievo are still pushing hard and looking for more. Inglese darts down the right wing and tries to latch on to a loose ball near to the byline, but Handanovic is there to flatten the striker with a hefty sliding tackle that results in a corner for the hosts. The set-piece is poorly hit, however, and sails straight into the hands of the Slovenian goalkeeper.
V. Birsa
Goal
Chievo
GOAL! What a strike by Birsa to double Chievo's lead! A curling cross is floated into the middle of the penalty area and just about deal with by Miranda, but his headed clearance can only find Birsa. The Slovenian takes a quick touch and heads to the right before unleashing a wonderful strike from 25 yards out, and it leaves Handanovic rooted to the spot before nestling into the bottom right-hand corner of the net. That surely means that all three points will be going to the hosts!
M. Brozović
Yellow Card
Internazionale
It just hasn't worked for Inter today, and they're looking incredibly frustrated as a result. A half-hearted attempt at an attack fails to result in a chance on goal and instead sees Chievo get awarded a free-kick for a foul on Gobbi, and Brozovic kicks the ball away in disgust, which earns him the latest yellow card of the game.
Hetemaj embarks on a great run down the left flank as he darts away from Kondogbia, but the Frenchman eventually catches up with the Finnish midfielder before pulling him back and giving away a free-kick. It's whipped into a dangerous position inside the penalty area and almost finds a yellow shirt in front of goal, but the visitors are just about able to deal with the danger at the vital moment.
I. Radovanović
Yellow Card
Chievo
And now Radovanovic is shown a yellow card for his part in the fracas.
G. Medel
Yellow Card
Internazionale
There's a slight coming together off the ball between Medel and Radovanovic, and the Chilean is immediately shown a yellow card for his actions.
S. Pellissier
R. Meggiorini
Chievo
And now Chievo have made a late substitution, with Meggiorini receiving a rousing round of applause from the home fans as he makes his way off the pitch to be replaced by Pellissier.
R. Palacio
E. Martins
Internazionale
Inter have made their final alteration of the game, with Eder making way for Palacio in one last roll of the dice from De Boer.
Chance for Inter! Perisic breaks down the left wing before running into traffic, which forces him into spinning and finding Nagatomo. The Japan international is in a pocket of space and does well to whip a dangerous cross into the heart of the Chievo penalty area, but it only ends up skimming the head of Icardi and bounces comfortably wide of the far post after failing to trouble Sorrentino.
R. Meggiorini
Yellow Card
Chievo
Meggiorini charges into D'Ambrosio as the two fight for a loose ball deep down the left wing and catches the full-back with a late challenge, resulting in him becoming the latest player to be shown a yellow card.
M. Brozović
É. Banega
Internazionale
Inter have made their second alteration of the night, with Brozovic coming on to replace Banega.
Inter lose the ball in the middle of the pitch and Chievo immediately counter. Birsa charges through the centre and heads towards the edge of the penalty area before trying to beat Handanovic with an almighty strike, but his effort on goal fails to trouble the goalkeeper and sails several yards over the top of the crossbar.
Inter are starting to put more pressure on Chievo and are beginning to find joy inside the hosts' half of the pitch, but, as was the case in the first half, it's just not quite working for them in front of goal. Chievo always seem to have plenty of bodies back and are always there to crowd whichever player finds themselves on the edge of the box.
What a chance for Inter! Banega steps up and curls an excellent cross into the heart of the penalty area, where several black and blue shirts are waiting in front of goal, but somehow the ball misses everybody before bouncing out for a goal-kick. Somebody really should have got a head on that!
Icardi muscles his way down the right-hand side of the Chievo box as he tries to find a way past Dainelli. He's unable to do so, however, and goes down after receiving an arm in the face from the centre-back, resulting in a free-kick for Inter in a very dangerous position just outside of the penalty area.
N. Rigoni
L. Castro
Chievo
Castro will play no further part today and is stretchered off the pitch to be replaced by Rigoni.
Castro seems to be really struggling after going down in the build-up to Inter's last chance on goal, and it looks as if he won't be able to play any further part in the game.
I. Perišić
A. Candreva
Internazionale
Inter have made their first change of the game, with Perisic coming on to replace Candreva, who has had a disappointing competitive debut.
Eder is starting to see more of the ball, and he's beginning to drive forward on more purposeful runs, particularly through the middle of the pitch when he cuts inside. This time he heads to the edge of the Chievo box before penetrating the right-hand side of the penalty area, but his attempted chip up towards Icardi is poor and sails straight into the hands of Sorrentino.
Inter are starting to come into the game now and are causing problems for Chievo when they're able to float high balls into the penalty area. Once again it's Miranda who causes problems after getting on the end of a looping cross from a corner, but this time his effort on goal ends up sailing comfortably over the top of the crossbar and out for a goal-kick.
A poor attempted clearance from Cesar can only find Eder, who immediately tries to take advantage of the mistake by powering towards the Chievo penalty area. However, Radovanovic does well to track back and dispossess the Italian striker, who screams for a free-kick but has his appeal waved away by the referee.
Great chance for Miranda! Inter push forward down the right wing and win themselves a free-kick, which is thumped over to the far post. The Brazilian breaks into the left-hand side of the Chievo penalty area and, completely unmarked, manages to make contact with the ball in front of goal, but he can only send his half-hearted attempt bouncing comfortably wide of its intended target.
Chievo are all over Inter and are making life incredibly tough for the visitors, who look really shaky on the counter. This time's Meggiorini and Inglese who link up well on the edge of the penalty area as they try to penetrate the box, and it's the latter who ends up unleashing a shot that deflects just wide of the far post.
Castro almost makes it 2-0! Inter don't look entirely comfortable at the back, and Chievo are doing their best to try and make the visitors pay for their mistakes. This time it's Castro who cuts inside from the left wing and flies towards the penalty area before trying to beat Handanovic, but he ends up scuffing his shot and sends it trickling into the hands of the Slovenian.
Inter immediately burst forward from the restart and put Chievo under plenty of pressure. A well-struck cross from Nagatomo flies over each of the hosts' defenders before finding Candreva at the far post, but the winger is slightly too tentative with the ball and is closed down before he can unleash a shot from close range.
V. Birsa
Goal
Chievo
GOAL! Chievo have taken the lead! A half-hearted Inter attack breaks down on the right-hand side of the hosts' penalty area, allowing Chievo to break forward on a quick counter-attack. It initially looks as if the visitors have dealt with the danger before the ball finds its way to Cacciatore. The right-back heads into the penalty area and towards the byline before teeing up Birsa, who comfortably skips past both D'Ambrosio and Ranocchia before slotting the ball into the back of the net.

Assist Fabrizio Cacciatore
Chievo immediately embark on a quick attack through the middle of the pitch as they move the ball up to the edge of the Inter penalty area, where it finds Inglese. The striker controls the ball well and then sets up Birsa, who immediately unleashes a thumping shot, but the Argentine's effort has slightly too much power behind it and ends up sailing over the top of the crossbar.
And we're underway once again!
The two teams are making their way back out on to the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.
It's been a disappointing first half for Inter, who have barely troubled Sorrentino in the Chievo goal and, on large occasions, have looked second best. Candreva and Banega have often got themselves into good positions but have failed to link up well enough with Icardi, who has been anonymous inside the hosts' penalty area. At the other end, Chievo have enjoyed a few good moments and went closest to opening the scoring thanks to a sliced shot from Meggiorini, but, bar that, they too have lacked the cutting edge needed to fire themselves in front.
HALF-TIME: CHIEVO 0-0 INTER
Inter push forward on an impressive attacking move before Eder is bundled over just outside of the Chievo penalty area, giving them a great opportunity to fire themselves in front with what will surely be the final chance of the first half. The Italian striker steps up and tries to curl a shot into the top right-hand corner of the net, but it's overhit and fails to trouble Sorrentino.
The fourth official has indicated that there will be just one minute of added time.
Candreva breaks down the right flank on a determined run before being put under good pressure from Gobbi. He's forced on to his left foot and then tries to swing a cross over to the far post, but it's completely overhit and fails to find Kondogbia, despite the Frenchman's best efforts.
What a chance for Chievo! A half-hearted Inter attacking move breaks down and Chievo immediately fly forward on an excellent counter-attack through the middle of the pitch. Castro receives the ball deep inside the visitors' half of the pitch and immediately pokes a lovely pass into the penalty area, where it finds Meggiorini, but the striker's shot ends up rolling agonisingly wide of the near post after leaving Handanovic rooted to the spot. That was the best opportunity of the game thus far!
Great tackle by Miranda! Castro almost takes the Brazilian defender by surprise with an excellent run forward after picking up the ball in the middle of the pitch, but the centre-back is just about able to dispossess the Argentine with a wonderful sliding tackle. The ball then rolls out to Cacciatore, who attempts to break down the right wing but is stopped by good defending from Banega.
Nagatomo cuts inside from the left wing before finding Banega, but the Argentine is closed down quickly and is only just about able to send the ball back to the Inter left-back before being pushed off balance. The Japan international also has to deal with good pressure from the Chievo defenders, and it forces him into spinning and playing the ball all the way back into the visitors' half of the pitch.
It just doesn't seem to be working for Inter, who are now on the back foot as they continue to struggle to string together a decent series of passes. Eder, Candreva and Banega don't seem to have developed an understanding, and it's making life very easy for the Chievo back line.
A determined Chievo attacking move breaks down, allowing Inter to counter quickly. They initially work the ball forward well before Eder cuts inside from the left wing and finds Candreva, but the new signing is slightly selfish and ends up taking a shot instead of shooting. The strike isn't hit well enough and doesn't have the power behind it to trouble Sorrentino, so the goalkeeper is able to watch it trickle wide of the goal.
Gobbi does well to shepherd the ball out of play for a throw-in and then launches it into the penalty area, but Medel is there to deal with the danger. Chievo try to come back again quickly through their left-back, but once again he's unable to find a teammate and has to watch his flicked pass bounce into the hands of Handanovic.
Meggiorini muscles his way towards the Inter penalty area before being bundled over by a rash challenge from Ranocchia, and once again Chievo are awarded a free-kick. This time it's 25 yards away from goal in the middle of the pitch and is perfect shooting distance for Birsa, but the Slovenian's curling shot ends up deflecting off the wall and over to the left wing.
D. D'Ambrosio
Yellow Card
Internazionale
Hetemaj receives a kick to the back of the leg that leaves him in a heap on the floor over on the left wing, and after giving it a few moments' thought, the referee finally decides to award a free-kick to Chievo before booking D'Ambrosio for the hefty challenge.
Cacciatore and Nagatomo battle for the ball before the right-back is dragged to the ground by the Japan international, resulting in another free-kick for Chievo, this time near to the halfway line. They take it quickly and try to swiftly move down the right wing, but Inter have enough bodies back to stop them from doing so.
Gobbi flies down the left wing on an excellent run before being clattered into by D'Ambrosio, who gives away a free-kick in an advantageous position. It's flung into the middle of the Inter penalty area, where plenty of yellow shirts are waiting, but the visitors do well to deal with the danger and can clear the ball over to the opposite flank.
Almost lovely play by Chievo! Meggiorini receives a quick pass forward and immediately sends a little flick round Miranda, which completely takes the Brazilian by surprise. Inglese darts into the Inter penalty area and tries his best to get on to the pass from his strike partner, but Handanovic is alert to the danger and darts out to deal with it.
Chievo are starting to come into the game, and they're being helped by poor passing from Inter. The visitors haven't looked entirely comfortable thus far and are struggling whenever they are on the ball in advanced positions.
Chievo slow down the pace of the game slightly before trying to hit Inter down the left wing. They work the ball forward well thanks to good play from Gobbi before Meggiorini is set up on the edge of the penalty area, but he's unable to spin past D'Ambrosio and Miranda and is eventually dispossessed by the Brazilian.
Ranocchia goes close! The resulting set-piece causes the Chievo defence all sorts of problems as it bounces around the penalty area. After several wild swings and a half-hearted punch from Sorrentino, it eventually falls to Ranocchia, but the defender's first-time strike ends up being pushed wide of the goal for another Inter corner.
Chance for Eder! Nagatomo cuts inside from the left wing and beats his marker before finding Eder, who is in a good position 25 yards away from the Chievo goal. The striker takes a quick touch before unleashing a thumping strike that looks set for the bottom left-hand corner of the net, but Sorrentino is there to tip the shot round the post and out for a corner.
Inter have dominated the opening quarter of an hour but have done very little with the ball. So far it's been far too easy for Chievo, who look compact and well-organised and are doing well to frustrate the visitors, who are being forced into firing speculative long-range efforts in an attempt to test Sorrentino.
Chievo really don't seem happy with the referee's performance at the moment, and they're really making themselves heard. This time it's Inglese who's penalised after finding himself involved with Kondogbia in a fierce battle for the ball, and the free-kick awarded to Inter gives them the opportunity to patiently push forward once again.
Inter again decide to send the corner short before trying to work their way into the Chievo penalty area, but there are far too many yellow shirts camped in front of them and they lack the intensity needed to beat the hosts, who sit deep and comfortably manage to keep the visitors at bay before winning the ball back over on the left wing.
Nagatomo charges down the left wing on a great run but is unable to find a way past Cacciatore and has to settle for a corner. The set-piece is taken quickly and sent short before being worked over to Kondogbia, who is in a pocket of space just outside of the Chievo penalty area, but his effort takes a deflection that sends it several yards wide of the far post.
Tackles are flying in all over the place, and it's now Kondogbia who's brought down by Radovanovic in the middle of the pitch as Inter try to break forward quickly. The resulting free-kick is taken quickly and sent out to Candreva on the right flank, but the winger's swinging cross fails to find Icardi in the heart of the penalty area.
Meggiorini really seems to be struggling after being clattered into by Ranocchia, and he still isn't at all happy with the centre-back's challenge. The Chievo players are now surrounding the referee as the striker receives treatment and they're all making their views very known to the man in charge.
Ouch! Inter carelessly lose possession deep inside their own half of the pitch and Meggiorini tries to make them pay with a quick dart towards the penalty area. He reaches the edge of the box and that tries to tee up Inglese, but Ranocchia is there to dispossess the striker with a hefty sliding tackle. The Chievo players aren't at all happy with the defender's challenge, but the referee doesn't see anything wrong with it and waves play on.
After a good start to the game from Inter, Chievo win the ball back near to the halfway line and try to break down the left wing on a quick counter-attack through Hetemaj. The Finnish midfielder initially does well to charge down the flank before trying to cut inside but Miranda is there to cut out the danger.
And we're off! Inter get us underway, attacking from right to left.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
Meanwhile, Inter boss Frank de Boer has made just one alteration to the side that won against Celtic in their final pre-season game, with Ivan Perisic making way for new signing Antonio Candreva.
Rolando Maran has decided to name an unchanged Chievo side to the one that started the 3-0 win at home to Virtus Entella in the third round of the Coppa Italia, with Roberto Inglese and Riccardo Meggiorini once again leading the line.
Inter substitutes: Melo, Palacio, Jovetic, Biabiany, Erkin, Santon, Gnoukouri, Carrizo, Perisic, Berni, Brozovic, Yao.
Inter XI (4-2-3-1): Handanovic; D’Ambrosio, Miranda, Ranocchia, Nagatomo; Kondogbia, Medel; Candreva, Banega, Eder; Icardi.
Chievo substitutes: Spolli, Rigoni, Gamberini, Sardo, Frey, Parigini, Pellissier, Bressan, Costa, Seculin, Jallow, Depaoli.
Chievo XI (4-3-1-2): Sorrentino; Cacciatore, Dainelli, Cesar, Gobbi; Hetemaj, Radovanovic, Castro; Birsa; Inglese, Meggiorini.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this evening…
Chievo’s ninth-place finish last season was their highest since they managed to end the 2005-06 season in fourth place, and it represented a fine achievement for manager Rolando Maran. The Flying Donkeys tailed off slightly at the end of the campaign and won just one of their final six games, but they proved to be tricky customers on several occasions throughout last season and will be looking to start to the new campaign with a positive result before facing Fiorentina and Lazio in what could prove to be two tricky encounters.
Prolific striker Mauro Icardi scored both of the goals in the two 1-0 wins for Inter in last season’s games between the two teams, and the Argentine will be hoping to start the season strongly as he aims to build on the 16 Serie A goals he scored last season. New signing Ever Banega, brought to the club from Sevilla, could prove to be similarly influential, as could Antonio Candreva, whom the Nerazzurri prised away from Lazio for almost £20m.
Inter's new manager has so far only had one chance to see his side in action, and that resulted in a 2-0 win at home to Celtic in an International Champions Cup game last weekend. It was certainly better than the 4-1 and 6-1 defeats suffered against Bayern Munich and Tottenham Hotspur at the end of Mancini’s run, and De Boer will be hoping to take that good form into their opening game against a side that they’ve lost to only once in their last 24 meetings.
Changing managers with less than two weeks to go until the start of the new season is never ideal, but Inter will be hoping that swapping Roberto Mancini for Frank de Boer proves to be a good decision as they try to build on the disappointment of last season’s fourth-place finish. After initially challenging for the title, the Nerazzurri struggled in the latter half of the campaign and ended up finishing 24 points behind winners Juventus, resulting in Mancini eventually losing his job earlier this month.
Good evening and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Serie A game between Chievo and Inter at the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi.
