Commentary

Chelsea's attention turns to Champions League duty against Sevilla midweek before they face Man Utd next weekend. That'll be an important early game for both teams. Southampton host surprise league leaders Everton. On this evidence they'll have nothing to fear. That's all for now. Goodbye!
This draw leaves both sides in the top half of the Premier League table with Chelsea in fifth and Southampton in 10th. Chelsea will be less happy with this outcome than Southampton will be as Lampard's side will have to settle for chasing the league's early frontrunners.
Chelsea and Southampton share the spoils after an entertaining encounter. Chelsea have reason to be disappointed after giving up the lead twice, especially given that they were 2-0 up early in the first half. Southampton hauled themselves back into contention though and Vestergaard won them a point in the end.
90' + 5' FULL-TIME: CHELSEA 3-3 SOUTHAMPTON
90' + 4' Southampton give Chelsea a scare at the death. Ings nearly gets a shot away in the box and Zouma hurriedly clears for a corner. Southampton come again and Walcott fizzes a shot wide to the left. That's it!
T. Walcott
Assist
90' + 2' Walcott gets an assist on his second debut for Southampton! The visitors are delighted. In truth it's no less than they deserve. They've been more than a match for Chelsea overall.
J. Vestergaard
Goal
90' + 2' GOAL! CHELSEA 3-3 SOUTHAMPTON! Southampton equalise with seconds left! James gives away an unncessary free-kick on James. Ward-Prowse sends it in and it comes out to Walcott who scuffs a shot straight into the ground. Vestergaard gets his head onto it and it finds its way into the net!
90' There will be four minutes of injury time at the end of this game. Can Southampton grab a late equaliser here?
T. Abraham
T. Werner
90' Werner's game is over. He can be pleased to have started scoring in the Premier League. Abraham replaces him up front for Chelsea for the final few minutes.
R. James
C. Pulisic
87' Chelsea make a change of their own as they attempt to see the game out. James comes on for Pulisic.
I. Diallo
Oriol Romeu
87' Southampton go for broke with two changes. First off is Romeu who's replaced by Diallo, Southampton's new signing from Brest.
S. Long
C. Adams
86' Adams is next to head off for Southampton. He's worked hard here. Long replaces him.
85' Werner skips down the left channel and looks for a teammate but there's not much going on. Azpilicueta uses his experience to hold the ball up for Chelsea and use up a few more seconds that could be useful for Southampton.
Oriol Romeu
Yellow Card
84' Romeu cynically brings down Kante as the Frenchman beats him to a loose ball. A deserved yellow card for the Spaniard is the result.
82' Chelsea still have work to do! Ings receives Walcott's cross in the box and fires low towards goal. It's straight at Kepa but it's a statement of intent from Southampton who could consider themselves unlucky to be losing here.
80' That might have been the chance for Southampton to leave here with something. Since Chelsea regained the lead the Saints haven't achieved very much.
78' Adams nearly hauls Southampton level again! The visitors break forward quickly and Walcott spots Adam's run to his right. Adams takes a touch and aims for the far bottom corner but his shot is inches wide.
N. Tella
N. Redmond
77' Southampton substitution. The young forward Tella replaces Redmond.
76' Chelsea win another corner. Romeu looks to block off the run of Azpilicueta but Havertz has a free header. The German can't prevent his effort from going over the crossbar.
74' Chilwell gets Chelsea a corner as Walker-Peters gets in the way of his cross. Chelsea have managed the game excellently since edging back in front.
H. Ziyech
M. Mount
72' Chelsea make their first substitution of the game. Mount is heading off after a solid showing. Ziyech takes his place on the right wing while Pulisic moves to his favoured position on the left.
71' Werner fouls Bednarek and hands the centre-back a free-kick in his own half. Chelsea are back on top again now.
69' Southampton keep pushing after Chelsea clear the corner. Romeu goes for goal from outside the box and fires high and wide.
67' Southampton are trying to get back into the game. Chilwell's header back to Kepa has too much power on it and the keeper can't stop it going out for a Southampton corner.
65' Chelsea look to have put paid to that spell of Southampton pressure with Havertz's goal. Ziyech is getting ready to come on down on the touchline.
63' Chelsea are back on the attack. Azpilicueta's drilled cross hits the legs of Pulisic to the right of the box. The American can't control it and it goes out for a goal-kick.
61' There were just 121 seconds between Adams' equaliser for Southampton and Havertz putting Chelsea 3-2 up. The goal was great work by Chelsea, but Southampton let themselves down by switching off so quickly after starting this second half well.
T. Werner
Assist
59' That's two goals and an assist in this game now for Werner. The floodgates have well and truly opened.
K. Havertz
Goal
59' GOAL! CHELSEA 3-2 SOUTHAMPTON! Chelsea get the lead again straight away! Pulisic dribbles through the middle and feeds Werner who's making a run down the right. Werner rolls the ball across goal for Havertz who makes no mistake.
C. Adams
Goal
57' GOAL! CHELSEA 2-2 SOUTHAMPTON! Southampton have levelled from a two-goal deficit! Romeu knocks the ball forward for Adams to chase and Zouma makes a hash of dealing with it. Kepa trips Adams, who to his credit stays on his feet. Ings can't get his feet together to tap in from close range and Adams lashes high into the net!
56' Bertrand's deep cross worries Christensen. The Dane wastes no time in punting it out of harm's way. Southampton take the free-kick quickly and Kepa drops low to catch Walker-Peters' skidding shot from range.
54' Southampton are pushing here. Christensen gets his head on the ball but Chelsea can't clear entirely. Ings plays a one-two with Bednarek and fizzes a shot just wide of the left-hand post.
53' Azpilicueta makes a poor pass straight to Redmond and holds back the England winger as he looks to punish the mistake. Southampton get a free-kick near the centre circle.
51' Chelsea look to capitalise on Southampton's high defensive line. Mount drops deep to receive possession and feeds Chilwell bursting forward down the left. Walker-Peters is on top of it for the visitors though.
49' Kepa claims Ward-Prowse's ball in without much fuss at all. Still, Southampton have started this half with some purpose.
B. Chilwell
Yellow Card
48' Chilwell receives the game's first yellow card for clipping Ward-Prowse's heels from behind. The Southampton captain will take the resulting free-kick.
47' Southampton try to find that equaliser straight away. Bertrand slips Ings in down the left flank and Azpilicueta cannily shepherds the ball out for a Chelsea goal-kick.
45' Chelsea get the second half underway. No changes by either side at half-time.
Chelsea are unbeaten in their last 81 Premier League games in which they've been leading at half-time at home, ever since their wild 3-5 defeat to Arsenal under Andre Villas-Boas in October 2011. A draw certainly isn't beyond Southampton here though. Will Hasenhuttl's team come racing out of the traps in the second half?
It's been a bright, positive game so far as Chelsea go in at the break with a narrow lead over Southampton. Chelsea were by far the better side in the first half hour with Werner grabbing two goals and plenty of invention in midfield. Southampton ended the half with reason for optimism as they pulled a goal back through Ings.
45' + 2' HALF-TIME: CHELSEA 2-1 SOUTHAMPTON
45' + 2' Southampton head away Chilwell's corner easily. That will be that for now.
45' + 2' Werner drifts down the left-hand channel and flashes a cross across goal. Chelsea get a corner out of it which will probably be the last act of the half.
45' Southampton are ending the first half on a high as Kepa claims a few crosses into the box. There will be two added minutes in this half.
C. Adams
Assist
43' That was quick-thinking by Adams who made it easy for Ings to score there. Southamptomn have recovered well since going 2-0 down.
D. Ings
Goal
43' GOAL! CHELSEA 2-1 SOUTHAMPTON! Chelsea play themselves into trouble and get punished. Adams slips a quick pass through Chelsea's centre-backs to find Ings who takes the ball past Kepa and finishes coolly.
41' Southampton make incremental progress down their left side. Chelsea soon force them back and Walker-Peters' slip almost sets the hosts away on the counter. Walcott is there quickly to help out.
39' Havertz dances into the box with a nice turn. Werner arrives on the scene to latch onto the loose ball, lashing a shot wide of the right-hand post. The striker looks hungry for more goals.
38' Chelsea have been very easy on the eye so far. It's easy to see what Lampard is trying to build here, even though they need to develop more steel if they're going to challenge for the league title again.
36' Southampton take the opportunity to slow the game down for a bit, knocking the ball amongst themselves. McCarthy eventually hands Chelsea a cheap throw-in with a wayward pass out from the back.
34' Walker-Peters looks for Ings but Ings is offside. Kante chips a pass forward for Werner but the German's beaten to the header. The pressure on Southampton eases slightly as Redmond gets clattered by three Chelsea players just outside his box. The visitors are clinging on for the time being.
32' More on Werner, who's become the fifth different German to score in the Premier League for Chelsea. Only Robert Lewandowski, Ciro Immobile and Cristiano Ronaldo have scored more goals across Europe's top five leagues since the start of last season than his 30. Now he's started scoring, you wouldn't bet against him bagging loads more.
30' Chelsea are dominant at the moment. The hosts win a corner down their right and Zouma powers a header straight at McCarthy. The Southampton keeper tips it aside for another corner. McCarthy claims at the second attempt.
T. Werner
Goal
28' GOAL! CHELSEA 2-0 SOUTHAMPTON! Werner's unshackled now. Jorginho sends a fantastic bouncing ball over the top for Werner to chase. Werner beats Vestergaard to it and cheekily dinks it over the onrushing McCarthy, allowing him to head into an empty net. That was a lovely goal.
26' Pulisic skips into the box and looks to cut the ball back for Werner. Walker-Peters gets in front of the striker though and manages to clear. Chelsea have missed the American winger so far this season.
24' Redmond cuts inside from the left and has a pop but his shot is blocked. Havertz wins a foul off Vestergaard and Ward-Prowse gets the same treatment from Azpilicueta seconds later.
22' Ward-Prowse's free-kick doesn't worry Chelsea very much as the hosts clear. Southampton are showing flashes of quality but not enough to be a sustained threat to Chelsea yet.
21' Christensen's shot from the right of Southampton's box is blocked. Up the other end, Walker-Peters wins a free-kick as he's fouled by Chilwell. There's an interesting tussle going on between the two full-backs.
20' That first Premier League goal for Werner, by the way, was on his 13th attempt in the competition. If at first you don't succeed, keep playing up front for Chelsea. You're sure to succeed eventually.
19' There's a zip about Chelsea here. Pulisic plays the ball off Vestergaard to give the hosts the first corner of the game. Southampton see it off easily enough.
17' Chelsea go looking for a second goal. Chilwell, again Chelsea's furthest player forward on the left, gets on the end of a header but it's too tame to test McCarthy.
B. Chilwell
Assist
16' Chilwell claims the assist for that goal, even though it was all down to Werner's invention. Both players have made a strong start to the game.
T. Werner
Goal
15' GOAL! CHELSEA 1-0 SOUTHAMPTON! Werner gets his first Premier League goal! It's a fine finish too. Chilwell passes to the striker, who turns Bednarek with a cute flick and dashes in behind. Werner skips across the penalty area with Southampton defenders bearing down on him before fizzing a low shot back past McCarthy.
13' Mount spots Chilwell on the run down the left and dinks a pass to him. Chilwell's first-time ball in is cleared. The left-back tries again and Werner beats McCarthy with the header but he's offside.
12' Walker-Peters plays a nice one-two with Walcott to keep things moving for Southampton. Bertrand's cross in causes confusion in the Chelsea area and Zouma saves Christensen's blushes by booting the ball out of play.
10' Walker-Peters gallops forward from right-back and Kante brings him down to give Southampton a free-kick. The visitors aren't afraid of getting up the pitch, even if it leaves them open at the back as their recent hammering by Tottenham showed.
8' Chance for Southampton! Adams sniffs a chance in the box and takes the shot early. Kepa is equal to it and Chelsea scramble clear. It's been a brisk, open start to the game.
7' Werner makes his first appearance in the game. The German bears down on goal from the left and aims for the opposite corner but it flashes just past the far post. The striker's still to get his first league goal for Chelsea but it'll come.
5' Chelsea are looking purposeful in these opening few minutes. Walcott slips Ings through but the England striker's shot is blocked. Chelsea take their turn to attack and Chilwell flings a cross into the box from deep. Pulisic darts onto it across Bertrand but can't keep his header down.
3' Chelsea make a bright start to the game! After both sides hockey in midfield, Pulisic dances through the centre and finds Chilwell in acres of space just outside the box. Chilwell lets rip with a low shot and forces a decent save from McCarthy. Werner tests the goalkeeper again but the German is offside.
1' Both sides take the knee and Southampton get this game started!
The two teams are out on the Stamford Bridge pitch. Chelsea will play in their home blue kit. Southampton are wearing their white away kit which has a fetching red trim.
Chelsea have been great at home in 2020. The Blues have won seven of their last eight Premier League home games, losing only to the champions Liverpool and scoring 18 goals in that run. They've also beaten Southampton in seven of their last nine meetings. Southampton won here last season though. Can the Saints march home with a positive result?
There are four changes to the Chelsea side that beat Crystal Palace two weeks ago. Edouard Mendy misses out through injury so Kepa starts in goal. Christensen, Mount and Pulisic also get the nod, while Ziyech is fit enough to make the bench. Southampton make two changes on the wings. Djenepo and Armstrong are out so Redmond starts, as does Walcott who makes his first start for Southampton since his return on loan.

After losing their opening two games, Ralph Hasenhuttl's Southampton are now looking to win three Premier League games on the bounce for the first time since early 2016. The Saints ran out 2-0 winners in this fixture last season. They'd surely welcome another such victory here.
Chelsea and Southampton return to action after the international break having made decent starts to their respective seasons. Chelsea were comfortable 4-0 winners in their last match against Crystal Palace. Frank Lampard will be hoping his young side can kick on over the coming weeks.
