Chelsea v Manchester United Live Commentary, 17/02/2020

0 - 2
A. Martial (45)
H. Maguire (66)
Stamford Bridge

That's it from me here this evening, I hope you've enjoyed following along. Until the next time, goodnight!
The win takes United up past Everton and Wolves into seventh, three points behind Chelsea in fourth. They're two behind Tottenham in fifth, which now looks like being the last Champions League place after Manchester City's ban from UEFA.
Both teams put the ball in the net twice, but Chelsea see both of theirs ruled out by VAR so it's three points for United. Martial flicked in a header against the run of play just before the half-time whistle, with Zouma seeing an equaliser from a corner chalked off for an Azpilicueta push. Maguire powered home a header from a corner which did stand, before Giroud turned home a good finish which didn't due to a close offside call. Batshuayi missed some big chances, Kante limped off injured, Willian was booked for diving in the area and Maguire escaped a VAR red card check in a hugely frustrating night for the Blues.
90' + 4' Mount looks to thread a pass in behind to Giroud, but he can't latch onto it.
90' + 3' Ighalo should make it three! He's threaded through on goal, but pokes his finish straight at Caballero with defenders swarming around him.
Diogo Dalot
Bruno Fernandes
Manchester United
90' + 2' Solskjaer kills off a few more seconds, as Fernandes goes off for Dalot.
O. Ighalo
A. Martial
Manchester United
90' + 1' Ighalo comes on for his United debut, replacing Martial.
90' + 1' There will be five minutes added on here. De Gea is back up and ok to continue.
90' The physios are now on for De Gea, who looks to have hurt himself going to save Mount's free-kick.
89' So close from Mount! It looked to be an angle for a cross but Mount goes for goal from the free-kick, and like Fernandes earlier in the game his curling effort bounces clear off the post at the bottom-right corner.
89' Fernandes catches James with a high boot and gives away a free-kick just outside the area, over to the right.
88' Chelsea win a corner on the left, and United can't get it away. It eventually comes to Pedro who hits it from the edge of the area, the ball deflecting out for another corner on the other side.
86' Maguire's long pass from the halfway line towards Williams on the left is immediately cut out. That seemed a strange choice of pass with five minutes to see out.
85' United win a free-kick on the halfway line as James rakes through the back of Williams.
83' A bit of pinball in the United area eventually ends up with Azpilicueta scooping the ball up for a fairly simple save for De Gea. Pedro then goes down with a spot of cramp.
82' Chelsea are without a win in their last three Premier League games, and last went four without a win in May 2016.
81' Chelsea are looking a little desperate now. Mount swings his left boot at a loose ball at the edge of the area, but the shot is immediately charged down.
Andreas Pereira
D. James
Manchester United
80' United make their first change of the evening, but there's no debut for Ighalo just yet. Pereira is the man introduced, with James making way.
A. Wan-Bissaka
Yellow Card
Manchester United
79' Wan-Bissaka is booked for reacting angrily to a fair-looking challenge from Azpilicueta.
78' Another disallowed goal for Chelsea, and it's another substitute in Giroud who sees a fine effort chalked off! James fed Mount down the right, and he whipped in a good low cross which Giroud turned home precisely at the near post. But, after a VAR check, he was deemed to have half a foot offside as the ball came in!
B. Williams
Yellow Card
Manchester United
76' Williams is booked for a tug on Willian's shirt, preventing the Chelsea counter.
75' United get a corner on the right, which is cleared towards Williams at the edge of the area. He opts not to shoot but gives the ball away to Giroud with an attempted square pass. Chelsea break, with Willian eventually winning a free-kick just inside the United half.
74' The corner is easily knocked clear by Shaw at the near post.
73' What a block from Bailly! Giroud fools Maguire completely with a clever flick in behind and Kovacic is through on goal, but Bailly - in his first appearance of the season - gets across superbly to slide the ball behind for a corner.
72' James bends the free-kick in towards the far post from the left touchline, but overhits it and it goes straight out for a goal kick.
71' Bailly and Wan-Bissaka combine to deny Azpilicueta a crossing opportunity by the left corner flag, but they don't get the ball clear and eventually give away a free-kick.
70' Azpilicueta makes a crucial goalline clearance after Maguire had headed a deep cross back across goal. Martial was ready to turn it home if the Chelsea skipper hadn't been there.
69' Maguire's header was the second shot on target in the match, after Martial's opener before the break.
O. Giroud
M. Batshuayi
68' Batshuayi is the man replaced by Giroud in a straight swap up front. The Belgian missed some big chances in the first half, but had barely been a factor in the second.
68' Giroud is being readied on the sideline for Chelsea, who are looking in big trouble now.
Bruno Fernandes
Manchester United
66' Fernandes has his first assist for United, for an inch-perfect corner.
H. Maguire
Manchester United
66' GOOAALLL! United double their lead, Maguire comes in with a crashing header! The pressure tells as Fernandes delivers an excellent corner from the left towards the penalty spot, and the centre-half comes flying in to power the ball into the bottom-right corner.
65' Zouma heads a United corner behind for another as the visitors apply their first spell of sustained pressure since the break.
Yellow Card
64' Pedro is booked for a late challenge through the back of Fred.
64' Fernandes almost punishes Pedro from the free-kick! He bends a right-footed effort low towards the bottom-right corner from the right corner of the area, and only the post denies him. Caballero might have had it covered had it been on target.
63' That is... absolutely bizarre from Pedro. With the ball deep in his own half, he dribbles it slowly backwards, jinking left and right to escape the attention of Fred but eventually losing the ball and pulling him down just outside the area. There were plenty of passing options for him there.
62' With more than an hour gone, Martial's goal is still the only shot on target so far this evening.
61' United almost get in behind on the counter from a Chelsea corner, but Kovacic just about gets across to the ball before James.
K. Zouma
Yellow Card
59' Zouma is also booked, either for the tackle on Martial or the handbags afterwards.
Yellow Card
Manchester United
59' Fred is booked for his part in the scuffle.
59' There's a coming-together outside the Chelsea penalty area, with Azpilicueta and Fred playing the leading roles. Martial went down in some pain after a hefty challenge from Zouma, with a physio coming on to tend to the forward as everybody else fought around him.
57' This had already been a frustrating game for Chelsea, and that won't have made things any better for them. They are knocking on the door again, though.
55' Goal disallowed! Chelsea think they're level through subsitute Zouma - Wan-Bissaka makes a brilliant block to deny Mount from close range, but the Frenchman turns in right-footed from the resulting corner. The celebrations are cut short, though, with VAR deciding Azpilicueta had pushed Williams as the cross came in.
54' James is finding space in the channel for Chelsea now, with Willian pushing out wider. He clips in another cross which eventually leads to Mount firing off the post, but the whistle had already gone for handball against Batshuayi after Bailly headed the ball down onto his arm.
52' James fizzes a ball into the feet of Mount, but Matic steps up ahead of him to intercept just outside the area.
51' Fernandes plays a nice-looking ball in behind for Martial to chase down the left channel, but right-back James beats him for pace and sweeps up the danger.
50' Willian bends in a cross from the right. It's a decent enough shape on the ball, but well overhit and it flies out for a throw-in on the other side.
49' Willian and Jorginho combine with a couple of deft flicks to play Chelsea out of danger in their right-back area, but the move doesn't develop past the halfway line.
A. Rüdiger
Yellow Card
48' Rudiger is booked early in the second half for blocking off Fernandes on the halfway line.
46' An ominous Chelsea stat to start the half - they've lost each of the four Premier League home games in which they have conceded first this season. Norwich and West Ham are the only other sides to have taken zero points after going behind at home.
45' We're back! Chelsea get the second half underway, searching for a route back into the game.
K. Zouma
A. Christensen
45' Chelsea make a change at the break. Zouma comes on for Christensen, who finished the first half with a bloody nose.
The forwards on the respective benches might be fancying a crack after the break. Batshuayi's profligacy will have Giroud interested, while Ighalo would be hopeful of finding some space with Chelsea committing more players forward.
Chelsea will be annoyed to find themselves behind, Martial flicking home a fine header from Wan-Bissaka's cross just before the break. Batshuayi has missed two good chances, while Willian has been booked for diving in the area and a VAR red-card check against Maguire went United's way. With Kante having limped off early on, it's been a frustrating first 45 for Lampard's side but a satisfying one for the travelling fans.
45' + 3' Batshuayi and Pedro combine down the right as Chelsea counter late in the half. Batshuayi gets in behind but drags a right-footed shot across goal and well wide from a tight angle.
45' + 1' Three minutes of time added on.
A. Wan-Bissaka
Manchester United
45' Wan-Bissaka gets the assist for a superb cross, excellently turned home by Martial.
A. Martial
Manchester United
45' GOOOAALLL! Manchester United lead out of nowhere, it's Martial! Fred found Wan-Bissaka on the right, and he turned Willian inside out before firing in a superb right-footed cross. Martial then did brilliantly to get above Christensen and flick a header just inside the far post.
44' It looks as though Christensen took a whack to the nose from Martial as he hauled him down, as he's gone off with a bloody handkerchief to his face. He'll get patched up, and should be ok to carry on.
43' Willian's booking for diving on 35 minutes was Chelsea's third of the season, taking them level with United. No team has more than three.
42' Christensen puts both arms around Martial and pulls him to the ground on the halfway line, then complains that a free-kick is given against him. He's hurt himself in the process, and the physios are on the have a look at him.
41' Willian, Mount, Kovacic and Batshuayi combine in a nice Chelsea move through the centre, but they can't quite find space for a cross from the left.
40' Rudiger finds James with a delicious cross-field ball out to the right touchline. It doesn't come to anything, but the pass deserved a mention.
38' Martial finds Shaw on the overlap, the 24-year-old popping up unexpectedly on the left from his starting berth in a back three. He finds himself in all sorts of space but wastes the chance completely, firing a cross high over the crossbar.
37' That's United's biggest chance so far. Martial plays a one-two with Fernandes on the left touchline and drives into the area from wide, but he gets the finish all wrong. It looks a simple enough chance, but he side-foots wide of the far post with his right.
Yellow Card
35' Drama! Willian goes down in the area from the resulting corner, but is booked for diving. He went over an outstretched foot from Fernandes, but there didn't look to be much contact on first viewing.
35' Azpilicueta scuffs a shot from the edge of the area but Matic dithers on the ball and Chelsea win it straight back, winning a corner.
34' Fred steps away from Kovacic in midfield and there briefly looks to be a United break on the cards, but Christensen is on hand to put a foot in.
33' Kovacic has been heavily involved so far. He has the most successful passes, most opposition-half passes, most touches, most clearances, most possession wins and most possession losses for Chelsea after half an hour.
32' Fernandes has his first pop from range, looping a right-footed effort wide to the right of goal from 25 yards. Still no shots on target from either side.
31' Fernandes finds James in space through the centre, and the Welshman carries it forward before spreading the play to Williams on the left. He gets the cross in, but Kovacic covers well and stretches a boot to tip it behind for a corner.
30' Azpilicueta stands up a delightful first-time cross from the left byline, but Willian can't get over Maguire to turn it goalwards.
29' James looks to slide a ball in to the feet of Batshuayi after drifting in from the right, but he goes down and no foul is given.
28' A United corner from the right is cleared away from the near post, but the ball is then fired back in towards the back stick. The ball stays in but two red shirts rather get in each other's way, and Chelsea can diffuse the situation easily enough.
27' Chelsea are starting to take charge of proceedings now. The two sides have looked reasonably well matched for the most part, but it's the home side putting together the more dangerous moves.
25' Another miss from Batshuayi! Mount escapes the attention of Wan-Bissaka down the left channel and latches onto a throughball. He pulls it back to Batshuayi by the penalty spot, but he scuffs a first-time effort wide to the left of goal.
23' Batshuayi should score! A Chelsea corner is never properly cleared and the ball is worked back into the area, flicked on first by Christensen, then Willian to find the Belgian eight yards out. He doesn't react quickly enough and scuffs a shot straight up into the air.
22' Maguire tumbles in a heap by the touchline and Batshuayi runs into his outstretched boot crotch-first, leaving the nearby Chelsea bench furious. There's a quick VAR check for a red card, with nothing given.
21' Martial gets into some space at the left corner of the penalty area and looks to bend a shot towards the far corner, but it's immediately charged down.
19' United look to pass their way around the Chelsea defence, but can't find a way through and Chelsea counter. Pedro runs into Fred just outside the area and wants a free-kick, but referee Anthony Taylor isn't impressed.
17' Wan-Bissaka gets over to make a good block on an attempted cross from Azpilicueta on the left. The resulting throw-in sees Pedro then get the better of the right-back, but his fizzed cutback is hacked away.
15' Chelsea make a bit of a mess of playing the ball out of defence, but they just about hold onto the ball long enough for Caballero to spring the press with a long ball forward. In the end, Batshuayi can't control Jorginho's overhit pass in behind the United defence.
13' United can't make anything of the corner, which is cleared after a second ball comes in.
M. Mount
N. Kanté
12' Mount is indeed the man to come on for Kante, who has limped off.
12' United put together their first real move of the evening, as Fernandes and Fred combine at the edge of the area to tee the latter up for a shot. He hits it well but it deflects over the bar off Rudiger.
11' Kante has gone off, and Chelsea are down to 10 men for the time being. Mount looks to be the man coming on, but the game is back underway in his absence.
10' Early trouble for the home side, as Kante goes down. The physios are on to assess him, with Barkley and Mount both sent to warm up on the touchline.
9' Chelsea threaten down the right again, and again it's Kovacic who leads the charge down the other side of the pitch. He looks to be fouled but Pedro plays on and finds the Brazilian in space on the right. He comes infield and shoots, but De Gea can watch it comfortably over the crossbar.
7' United win a corner on the left, which Fernandes takes short. The man coming short then also passes back to Bailly, who isn't exactly known for his crossing ability but loops an awkward ball in towards Maguire at the far post. Chelsea scramble it clear.
6' Close from James! Kovacic leads a Chelsea attack with a powerful run through midfield, exchanging passes with Azpilicueta before finding James at the right corner of the penalty area. He makes room for a shot and fires hard across goal towards the far bottom corner, but drills it just wide.
4' United have failed to score in four of their last five Premier League games, including each of the last three. They last failed to score in four consecutive league games back in April 1989.
3' Bailly turns well away from Batshuayi, but holds the hall too long and runs straight into Pedro. Chelsea get the ball midway inside the United half but luckily for the away side, Kovacic's pass into the penalty area is intercepted.
2' The first mistake of the evening comes from Chelsea, as Jorginho needlessly puts a first-time pass straight out of play at the halfway line.
1' We're off! United get the ball rolling with Fernandes taking kick-off.
The players are on their way out onto the pitch, and kick-off is just moments away.
Following their win back in August, United are looking to complete a league double over Chelsea for the first time since the 1987-88 season. They have already won here this season, with a 2-1 win in the Carabao Cup in October.
Of United’s new boys, Fernandes starts behind the forwards while Ighalo has to make do with a spot on the bench. Defender Bailly makes his first competitive appearance since April last year – a 1-1 draw with Chelsea.
Top scorer Tammy Abraham drops out of the Chelsea squad entirely, so it’s a big chance for Batshuayi to make an impression while Caballero continues in goal. At an average of 28 years and 171 days, this is the Blues’ oldest Premier League team this season.
