Commentary

That's all from us, we look forward to seeing you for the next game. For now though, goodbye!
So, Brighton didn;t take their chance to move fifth, but they do rise to sixth above Arsenal, who play tomorrow. It's not so blissful for Newcastle though, who although are off the bottom on goal difference, are now the only team in the league yet to win a game. If Eddie Howe gets the job, he's got it all to do, as no amount of new owners' money can buy results, especially as the Magpies fall further and further adrift of the pack!
He scored the first goal, and Leandro Trossard was a nuisance all game for Newcastle's defenders. He finished the match with a goal, three on-target shots from five attempts, and three key passes! It wasn't enough though, as Brighton's unclinical finishing put paid to any chance of extending their lead, particularly when Newcastle were there for the taking!
And that's that! A game which for the most part was a slow burner to say the least, but the last ten minutes provided some chaotic action that the game had been sorely lacking for larger parts! Brighton were the better team in the second half too, but they didn't do enough to kill off the Newcastle fightback, and Hayden's equaliser locked the scores up!
FULL-TIME: BRIGHTON 1-1 NEWCASTLE UNITED
90' + 8' We're still going, as a Murphy cross from deep takes a wicked deflection to gain Newcastle a corner!
90' + 6' Veltman and Cucurella link up and the former chips into the box looking for the Spaniard's continuing run, but it's too heavy and Darlow easily collects.
D. Gayle
E. Krafth
Newcastle United
90' + 4' Krafth's off, and Dwight Gayle's on as Newcastle will look to throw everything at Brighton now!
90' + 3' After all that, the Shelvey free-kick into the box is abysmal and Brighton clear easily! If the Newcastle fans inside the Amex hadn't already torn their hair out...
Robert Sánchez
Red Card
Brighton & Hove Albion
90' + 2' RED CARD!!! Sanchez has just caught Wilson, but he's the last man and it's a straight red! Webster gets the gloves on for the last few minutes as this game goes right down to the wire!!!
90' + 1' The issue's gone to VAR as the referee inspects, and every replay is looking worse for Sanchez in the Brighton goal...
90' + 1' We're into five minutes of added time here, don't go anywhere!
90' WHAT'S HAPPENED HERE??? A long ball forward from Joelinton sends Wilson through on goal. He rounds Sanchez, who sticks out a foot and the Magpies striker goes down!!! The contact looked minimal, but his protests aren't as he demands a VAR check!!
89' As both sides search for a winner, it's worth noting that despite Newcaslte having equalised and grown back into the game, their possession in this half is still just 35.8 per cent, up very little from their 33.2 percentage in the first half.
87' Sanchez comes for a Shelvey cross but gets it all wrong, and he doesn't get any of the ball as Wilson closes in. Duffy's there to clear the danger though and Brighton stop another Newcastle attack in it's tracks!
86' A crossed-in ball from Newcastle is headed away towards Murphy, who tries his luck with a half-volley from distance. Other than nearly hitting Cucurella, it causes little trouble, and flies well wide and over into the home crowd.
N. Maupay
Yellow Card
Brighton & Hove Albion
84' Maupay looks to get around the outside of Murphy, but he clips the Newcastle man's face with his hand on the way and is booked.
Y. Bissouma
Yellow Card
Brighton & Hove Albion
84' Bissouma is yellow carded as he's all over Hayden and illegally impedes him.
82' Joelinton capitalises on a loose ball and looks to cross, but it deflects off Dunk and bounces tamely into the arms of Sanchez.
80' Veltman fires in a powerful cross towards Trossard, that Darlow has to come out and jump for to avert the danger.
79' Wilson controls a diagonal ball from Shelvey and sends Ritchie through, but he's judged to have controlled it with his arm and the referee blows for a free-kick.
77' Clark tries a ball forward for Ritchie, but Lallana intercepts with the aid of Bissouma, and the home side beat the Saint-Maximin-lead press to surge forward again.
A. Webster
T. Lamptey
Brighton & Hove Albion
75' Lamptey has been impressive in his first start since returning from injury, but he's taken off as a precaution and Adam Webster replaces him.
A. Lallana
Yellow Card
Brighton & Hove Albion
74' Lallana and Saint-Maximin tussle for the ball, leading to the Brighton midfielder committing a foul and being given a yellow card. It's not been the most disciplined last few minutes, for either team.
Joelinton
M. Almirón
Newcastle United
74' Almiron is withdrawn by Graeme Jones, and Joelinton comes on in his place.
C. Wilson
Yellow Card
Newcastle United
73' Wilson shoves Mac Allister down for no need whatsoever, and is booked by David Coote as a result.
71' Duffy and Krafth collide in mid-air as they compete to win a Cucurella cross, and the Newcastle defender is down receiving treatment.
J. Shelvey
Yellow Card
Newcastle United
69' Shelvey is booked for a cynical foul on Trossard.
68' That ball might've come from open play, but Ritchie's crosses from dead balls have created a massive 13 chances in the league this season. That's the most of any Premier League player.
C. Clark
Assist
Newcastle United
66' That header down from Clark was perfectly weighted for Hayden to volley home, and the cross from Ritchie was even better!
I. Hayden
Goal
Newcastle United
66' GOOOALLLL!!! There's the equaliser and the away end goes ballistic! Ritchie's cross is headed down by Clark at the back post, and there's Hayden to volley past Sanchez to make it 1-1! Game on!
N. Maupay
S. March
Brighton & Hove Albion
65' March comes off, and Brighton reinforce their striking options through the introduction of Neal Maupay.
64' Newcastle have had better possession in this half, but they're still doing next to nothing with it. They're not exactly playing with the fight, passion or desperation of a team with their Premier League status firmly on the line.
62' Ritchie crosses in a deep Newcastle free-kick, causing chaos in the Brighton box as Hayden has at least two attempts blocked before the home side clear!
J. Murphy
Yellow Card
Newcastle United
60' It's the curse of the live text commentator as Murphy is booked for a foul on Cucurella!
59' Murphy, playing out of position at right-wing-back, has been quite impressive for Newcastle. He's won two fouls, made four tackles and two interceptions, and has won the ball for his team six times, all highs for the team. He's one that potential incoming manager Eddie Howe will have his eye on in this match.
57' WIDE!!! A long kick from Sanchez finds Trossard, who dribbles into the box before he's crowded out. He cuts back to Lallana, who shoots from the edge of the box, but it's just wide to the right of Darlow's post.
55' The corner comes to nothing, but Shelvey's cross back in is headed away by Dunk, but only as far as Murphy who lets fly. The ball deflects off several pairs of legs and is heading towards goal, but Sanchez has it covered and easily gathers.
54' Bissouma cleverley tries to get himself out of trouble under pressure from Murphy, but gets it horribly wrong and concedes the corner.
52' Trossard is making fun of the Magpies at the moment. He gets away from three leggy defenders and shapes to shoot from the edge of the box. It's a good curling effort, but doesn't curl enough to beat Darlow and flies just wide of his left-hand post.
50' They've hardly had a kick so far this second half, and should the scores stay the same, Newcastle will extend their record winless start to 11 games. They last went more than ten league games without a win between December 2007 and March 2008, not winning in 13.
48' Trossard is on the attack again, this time crossing for Cucurella, who's header back across goal is horribly mistimed and the ball dribbles away for a goal kick.
47' SAVED!!! Veltman sends Trossard through on goal, and his low drive on the angle forces Darlow into a save with his legs! A bright start to the second period for the home side!
46' Newcastle's Wilson kick off the second half, and we're underway once again!
A. Mac Allister
E. Mwepu
Brighton & Hove Albion
46' Alexis Mac Allister will come on for the second half, replacing Mwepu for Brighton.
The teams are on their way back out, and the away side have to turn this around in the second half!
Lamptey's made the entire right-hand-side of the pitch his own in that first half. As well as completing two key passes, he's also created two dangerous crossing situations and has had one on-target shot. If Newcastle don't put the brakes on him in the second period, he could well run riot for Brighton once again.
A rather bland first-half comes to an end, and with likely soon-to-be Newcastle boss Eddie Howe in the stands at the Amex, the Magpies' performance showed just how much he'll need to do to turn their fortunes around. They were dismal as Brighton controlled the possession and tempo of that half, and despite not creating much themselves in the way of chances, the Seagulls more than deserve their 1-0 lead going into half-time.
45' + 3' HALF-TIME: BRIGHTON 1-0 NEWCASTLE UNITED.
45' + 2' WIDE!!! Lamptey drives into the box and turns Ritchie inside out like a sock, before floating a cross to the back post that March can't any direction on, and Clark ushers the ball out for a goal kick!
45' We'll play three more minutes of stoppage time at the end of this first half.
44' Saint-Maximin looks to chip the ball over March, whose clear handball is missed, but the Brighton winger fouls Murphy soon afterwards and the Magpies get their free-kick.
42' OFF THE LINE!! Lascelles rises highest to head the ball forward to Saint-Maximin, whose shot on the turn is goalbound before Dunk clears his lines! It looked to be Newcastle's best chance, but Saint-Maximin was miles offside from the header and is rightfully pinged.
41' Murphy is found well by Wilson, and after some link-up play with Almiron breaks down, the Magpies wing-back takes on Cucurella and wins a corner.
39' Wilson looks to press Veltman into giving up possession, and does so, but fouls him in the process and concedes a needless free-kick.
37' Both Murphy and Almiron have each been dispossessed six times already for Newcastle. It's testament to both how little Newcastle are doing with the ball, and how much Brighton's press is preventing them from maintaining any breathing space whatsoever.
35' Trossard's not letting up after scoring the opener, and Hayden is lucky to avoid a booking aftert bringing him down as the Brighton man looked to move forward up the pitch.
33' Before this match, Newcastle and Watford were the only teams in the Premier League yet to keep a clean sheet. With the Hornets not playing until tomorrow, and Newcastle being behind already in this match, they may well be the last team of the lot to keep a team scoreless this season!
31' Brighton look to have changed their setup since scoring. Lamptey is now on the right-wing with Veltman behind him, and Lallana has dropped into central midfield, pushing Bissouma deeper and March wide to the left.
29' Clark is involved in another penalty shout, but this time it's at the other end as a long-throw causes chaos in Brighton's box. Clark collides with Duffy and hits the floor, hard, but nothing is given and play carries on!
27' CLOSE!!! Brighton nearly make it two in two minutes as Veltman finds Lamptey. He fizzes a low ball across goal but it's just too far in front of Trossard for him to connect, and Cucurella's follow-up goes well wide!
26' Trossard's bright start has been so effective for Brighton, and as well as scoring the penalty he won, he's also had two on-target shots already and completed a key pass!
Penalty Goal
24' GOOALLL!!!! Trossard sends Darlow the wrong way with a cool-as-you-like penalty, and just like that the home side are 1-0 up!
22' IT'S GIVEN!!! Clark really can have no complaints there, he does make clear contact and hold Trossard back on his way down. No card for the Newcastle defender, but a Trossard penalty from 12 yards is their major worry at the moment!
21' We're looking at VAR to no-one's surprise, it looks a penalty from most angles but Trossard did go down easily! It'll be interesting to see if this is given...
20' HANG ON!!! A Brighton corner comes in and Trossard controls it, looking to shoot before he goes down under contact from Clark! He screams for a spot-kick, but referee David Coote isn't swung!
18' Veltman looks to chip a ball through for Lamptey, but Saint-Maximin is again back to cut it out. He sprints away and looks to feed Almiron, but he can't control the ball and the Frenchman's hard work is undone.
16' A win in this match for Brighton would see them on 19 points after just 11 games. Their 16 in 10 before this is already their best-ever start to a top-flight season.
14' Saint-Maximin tracks back to help out Clark and Ritchie in their own corner, and does superbly well to skillfuly win the ball and set Newcastle away on an attack.
J. Lascelles
Yellow Card
Newcastle United
12' Newcastle captain Lascelles smashes into Trossard late, and is given the game's first booking as a result.
11' If it wasn't a tall enough order for lowly Newcastle already, their record against the Seagulls isn't the best. They haven't beaten Brighton once in eight games since both were promoted in 2017, and that run, including four defeats, has only seen them score one goal.
9' A Lamptey run sees Clark deflect it out for a corner, and Duffy's header from the resultant kick is once more accurate, but it bounces on its way to goal and Darlow gathers.
7' Some great link-up play between Murphy and Almiron as Newcaslte fly forward, and the former's cross looks inviting but Almiron can't get to the ball and the chance goes begging!
6' Lamptey drives in-field and floats a cross onto the head of Trossard. It's on-target, but the header has very little power and Darlow can catch with ease.
5' Almiron nips the ball in front of Cucurella and looks to get in behind the Brighton wing-back, but he can't get to the ball quick enough and it goes out for a throw-in.
3' The home side will be looking to pick up where they left off against Newcastle - Brighton won both their fixtures against the Magpies in 2020-21, and both by a score of three goals to nil, too.
1' A loose pass from Ritchie puts Shelvey in all sorts of trouble, but Krafth is there to prevent any danger coming towards Darlow's goal.
1' The last post is applauded by the home crowd, and we're underway in this match!
A lively home crowd lays in wait as the two sides come out, and we’re very nearly ready for kick-off!
The Amex Stadium is a happy hunting ground for Magpies striker Callum Wilson – he’s scored or assisted once every 50 minutes on average at the Seagulls’ stadium. However, those four goal contributions all came whilst Wilson was at his previous club, Bournemouth.
Tariq Lamptey, so impressive off the bench in Brighton’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool, is rewarded with a start in this game, on the right of a midfield four.
NEWCASTLE UNITED SUBS: Martin Dubravka, Fabian Schar, Joelinton, Jamal Lewis, Javier Manquillo, Ryan Fraser, Joe Willock, Dwight Gayle, Sean Longstaff.
NEWCASTLE UNITED (5-3-2): Karl Darlow; Jacob Murphy, Emil Krafth, Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark, Matt Ritchie; Miguel Almiron, Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey; Callum Wilson, Allan Saint-Maximin.
BRIGHTON SUBS: Jason Steele, Adam Webster, Neal Maupay, Alexis Mac Allister, Pascal Gross, Jakub Moder, Jurgen Locadia, Taylor Richards, Jeremy Sarmiento.
BRIGHTON (3-4-2-1): Robert Sanchez; Joel Veltman, Shane Duffy, Lewis Dunk; Tariq Lamptey, Enock Mwepu, Yves Bissouma, Marc Cucurella; Solly March, Adam Lallana; Leandro Trossard.
Newcastle, having missed out on Unai Emery and still in the hunt for Eddie Howe, are still managerless, and even a win for interim boss Graeme Jones’ side won’t see them rise any higher than 19th in the table.
High-flying Brighton are a lofty seventh in the league table, and a win in this match, against the bottom-placed Magpies, would propel them even higher, up to fifth.
