8th Finals
UEFA Europa League

Thank you for following our coverage of tonight’s Champions League match-up between Bayern Munich and Salzburg. Until next time, stay safe!
Next up for Bayern is a trip to Stuttgart on Saturday afternoon back in the German topflight whilst Salzburg travel to St Polten in the Austrian Bundesliga as they go in search of another domestic league title.
Bayern win again in the Champions League and progress as group winners from Group A with two matches to spare. They didn’t have it all their own way tonight as Salzburg played well and threatened often but strikes from Lewandowski, Coman and Sane help them past the Austrian champions. Berisha did get one back late on for the visitors but it was a case of too little too late for Jesse Marsch’s men.
M. Camara
Yellow Card
90' + 4' Camara is booked for showing dissent towards the referee.
90' + 4' Salzburg play a late corner short but Adeyemi fires his cross over everybody and out for a Bayern goal kick.
90' + 2' A foul by Adeyemi on Martinez in midfield just alleviates some of the pressure on Bayern Munich. That was a silly foul to give away by the Salzburg substitute.
90' There'll be a minimum of 6 minutes of added time played by the referee.
89' Salzburg get another dangerous free kick just outside the Bayern penalty area. This time Berisha takes but his right-footed shot from 30 yards is high and wide.
87' Bayern grab another corner but Ramalho clears the danger with his head. They’ll be plenty of added time here though following that earlier VAR check but maybe not enough for Salzburg to get back into this Champions League clash.
85' INCHES!!! Salzburg should have another. Koita plays through Sucic who dances around Neuer but at the crucial time, he loses his footing. It should be a simple finish but his effort from a tight angle just misses past the far post. Agonisingly close for the visitors!
83' Boss Hansi Flick will be looking for his experienced players to stand up and see this win out for the hosts. His move to bring on Martinez for the final ten minutes adds a lot of experience to his side’s defence.
81' It’s now or never for Salzburg if they want something from this match. Ulmer has a shot from 15 yards out, but his right-footed effort is straight at Neuer.
Javi Martínez
C. Richards
79' Martinez also replaces Richards at the same time. Another great performance from the young American defender who played at both left-back and right-back tonight.
Douglas Costa
K. Coman
78' Douglas Costa is going to join the fun for the final 15 minutes of play as Coman leaves the field.
R. Kristensen
73' It was a fantastic cross from Kristensen who laid it on a plate for Berisha.
M. Berisha
73' GOOOOOAAAALLLLL!!! 3-1 AND SALZBURG GET ONE BACK. BERISHA!!!! Kristensen plays a lovely ball in from the right and the German striker pounces from close range to pull one back for the visitors. There was a very long VAR check to see if the forward was offside, but the goal is given.
M. Ashimeru
E. Mwepu
72' Ashimeru comes on at the same time for the visitors to replace Mwepu.
L. Sučić
D. Szoboszlai
71' It's a Champions League debut for Sucic who replaces Szoboszlai.
K. Adeyemi
Z. Junuzović
71' Junuzovic departs with Adeyemi taking his place in midfield.
70' HOW DOES NEUER DO IT?!?! He’s still the best in the world and for good reason. First, he turns a shot away from Berisha and then he gets up to somehow tip over a close-range effort from Mwepu. Unbelievable stuff!
K. Coman
68' A lovely floated cross from Coman for the assist.
L. Sané
68' GOOOOAAAALLLL!!!! 3-0 TO BAYERN. SANE!!!! Bayern take the game away from Salzburg with a lovely team goal. Lewandowski plays a ball out wide to Coman on the left who delivers a ball to the back stick at the first time of asking. Sane is charging into the box, jumps highest and slots his header into the bottom right corner of Stankovic’s net from ten yards out.
66' ROCA IS OFF!!! The central midfielder recieves a second yellow card and his marching orders for a late challenge on Junuzovic. That could be a game changer!
65' The joint introduction of Sane and Hernandez down the left is already causing problems for Salzburg. The pair look full of pace and have already linked up well a few times.
L. Hernández
B. Pavard
63' Hernandez also comes on for Pavard at the same time. The French defender is quickly pulled from the action following that late challenge from Koita minutes ago.
L. Sané
S. Gnabry
62' A first change of the evening is made as Sane replaces Gnabry for Bayern.
60' Sane is getting ready to come on for the hosts. Gnabry and Coman haven’t been at their best tonight and the former Manchester City winger could add some much-needed pace upfront for Bayern.
S. Koïta
Yellow Card
58' Koita is booked for a late tackle. That’s a painful one for Pavard as Koita falls on his trailing foot after going up for an aerial challenge.
58' It’s just not happening in the final third tonight for Salzburg. The Austrian side have looked lively again in the opening ten minutes of this second half, but their final ball just isn’t quite good enough.
55' Again, Salzburg respond well and keep hold of the possession. Szoboszlai shoots from distance but his effort from 25 yards isn’t troubling Neuer who watches it past his near post.
L. Goretzka
52' Assist Leon Goretzka
K. Coman
52' GOOOOAALLLLL!!! 2-0 TO BAYERN. COMAN!!!! The German champions double their lead. Goretzka wins the ball and plays a pass out wide to Coman. The French winger comes inside from the left and shoots with his right from 25 yards out. His effort is goal bound but a huge deflection from Wober sends it past a helpless Stankovic in net.
51' Salzburg get a dangerous free kick on the edge of the Bayern area as Pavard fells Mwepu. Szoboszlai steps up but his right-footed effort from 25 yards is well over.
Marc Roca
Yellow Card
49' Roca gets a yellow for stomping on Junuzovic's foot. The Spaniard didn't mean to but that'll be a sore one for the Austrian midfielder.
48' With the score remaining goalless in Madrid between Atletico and Lokomotiv Moscow, Salzburg have currently dropped to the bottom of Group A. They need to turn this match around tonight if they have any aspirations of making the Champions League first knock-out round.
46' The players are back on the field and the second half begins. No changes for either side at the break!
Salzburg will take positives from their first half performance and continue to push in the second. The away side are bound to have more chances in the second 45 but need to finish them off when it matters the most.
Lewandowski’s late strike is the difference between the two sides at the break in this Champions League clash. The away side have played the better football on the whole and have had their own big chances but simply haven’t converted when needed.
45' Salzburg respond with a chance of their own but Koita’s shot is right down the throat of Neuer who collects.
R. Lewandowski
42' GOOOOOAAAALLLL!!! 1-0 TO BAYERN. LEWANDOWSKI!!!! A goal somewhat against the run of play. Muller plays a one-two with the Polish striker on the edge of the Salzburg penalty area and shoots from 30 yards. Stankovic keeps out the effort but can only parry and there's Lewandowski in the right place at the right time to convert from close range.
41' Bayern Munich are looking to extend their record winning streak in the UEFA Champions League to 15 games, with the German giants last failing to in the competition courtesy of a 1-3 home defeat to Liverpool in the Last 16 in March 2019.
39' It’s really not been a fantastic performance from Bayern in this first half. Their play has been slow and nowhere near their usual high standard. The visitors have played the better football overall and definitely should be ahead.
37' Junuzovic has been fantastic for the visitors so far tonight. The Austrian midfielder is keen to put in a big tackle when needed but also has the capability to link up the play from his midfield position. His inclusion tonight is proving to be a huge boost for Salzburg.
35' HOW HAS HE MISSED?! Szoboszlai will not want to see that one again. Berisha flicks a ball over the Bayern back line and the young Hungarian midfielder is in on goal. He takes a look at Neuer, sets himself but from 15 yards out he smashes his effort miles over the bar.
33' Salzburg are pressing the ball at every opportunity so far tonight. The Austrian outfit are putting pressure on the Bayern back line when they have the ball and Koita and Berisha in particular are looking to force a mistake.
31' Goretzka shoots from distance but his effort is blocked by Wober. Another Bayern corner to follow.
29' CHANCE! Gnabry whips in a corner for the home side and Lewandowski leaps highest. The in-form striker doesn’t get enough on his header from close range though and it drifts wide.
27' Szoboszlai does take the free kick but his cross is cleared by the head of Gnabry. Ulmer shoots from 30 yards out first time but his left-footed effort is weak and rolls out for a Bayern goalkick.
26' Salzburg grab a free kick on the right wing in a dangerous position. It looks like Szoboszlai will deliver from the set piece.
M. Neuer
Yellow Card
24' Neuer goes into the book for failing to let Berisha take a quick throw in on the right wing. The Bayern goalkeeper had raced out to clear the previously danger.
22' Salzburg have won two of their last three away European fixtures against German opposition (L1), with their last victory coming against Leipzig in the UEFA Europa League in September 2018.
20' Junuzovic leads a break for Salzburg who gain possession from a poor Gnabry pass but the central midfielder can’t release Koita. You could certainly argue that Salzburg have been the better team in this one so far tonight!
17' HUGE CHANCE! Salzburg should be ahead in Munich. A poor ball from Alaba sets Koita free who slides a ball through to Berisha. The German youngster is one-on-one with Neuer but he can’t lift his effort over the Bayern keeper from close range. Mwepu should finish the rebound but his effort is weak and straight at Neuer.
15' After a fantastic opening ten minutes in this Champions League clash, Salzburg have just begun to surrender possession a little too easily. Koita tries to break down the right but his pass inside towards Berisha is dealt with by Boateng.
13' Bayern are beginning to turn the screw now. The German side have dominated the possession over the past five minutes and Lewandowski is the latest to go for goal. The Polish striker opens up his body 25 yards from goal, but his bending effort goes just over.
11' CLOSE! Gnabry very nearly opens the scoring. Bayern play some lovely football down the left wing and a cross is delivered. Ramalho does well to clear originally but the ball falls perfectly for the Bayern winger on the edge of the box. His right-footed volley just misses the far top corner.
9' Bayern Munich are unbeaten in their last eight clashes with Austrian sides in European competition (W6 D2), after losing their first such encounter against SK Rapid Wien in the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1967 (0-1).
7' As expected, Richards will play at left-back tonight for Bayern. The young American has only played a handful of times so far for the German champions – usually at centre-back – so tonight’s match will prove a huge learning curve for him regardless of the result.
5' More great play from Salzburg sees them attack down the left as Szoboszlai floats a cross into the back post. Mwepu leaps but Coman does well to recover and clear for a corner.
3' Salzburg have the first effort on target of the night. The Austrian side work it well from a throw in deep in the Bayern half and Camara shoots from just outside the box. His effort from 30 yards is on target but Neuer handles it with ease.
1' After a moment of silence to remember one of football’s greatest stars - Diego Armando Maradona - referee Orel Grinfeld blows his whistle and we’re underway here at the Allianz Arena!
The players are emerging from the tunnel and kick-off is just moments away.
The first-ever meeting between these two sides on MD3 ended in a 6-2 away win for Bayern Munich, the first time Salzburg have shipped six goals in any European competition.
Salzburg too have their injury problems coming into this Champions League fixture. Star forward Patson Daka is out with a thigh injury but the experienced Junuzovic does make the starting XI after a late fitness test. Boss Jesse Marsch opts for a youthful looking midfield to surround Junuzovic as Mwepu, Kamara and man-of-the-moment Szoboszlai all start. German youngster Berisha starts upfront alongside Koita.
Hansi Flick has to deal with a plethora of recent injury concerns as Joshua Kimmich, Alphonso Davies, and Corentin Tolisso are all ruled out of tonight’s clash. Instead the Bayern manager opts for a blend of youth and experience as young American defender Richards gets the nod at left-back and Roca starts in central midfield. It’s business as usual in attack however as Muller, Gnabry, Coman and Lewandowski all start whilst Sane could be introduced from the bench as the match progresses.
SALZBURG SUBS: Carlos Coronel, Alexander Walke, Majeed Ashimeru, Albert Vallci, Jerome Onguene, Luka Sucic, Oumar Solet, Patrick Farkas, Karim Adeyemi.
SALZBURG (4-2-2-2): Cican Stankovic; Rasmus Kristensen, Andre Ramalho, Maximilian Wober, Andreas Ulmer; Mohamed Camara, Zlatko Junuzovic; Enock Mwepu, Dominik Szoboszlai; Sekou Koita, Mergim Berisha.
BAYERN MUNCH SUBS: Alexander Nubel, Javi Martinez, Leroy Sane, Douglas Costa, Eric Choupo-Moting, Joshua Zirkzee, Lucas Hernandez, Jamal Musiala, Bright Arrey-Mbi.
BAYERN MUNICH (4-2-3-1): Manuel Neuer; Benjamin Pavard, Jerome Boateng, David Alaba, Chris Richards; Marco Roca, Leon Goretzka; Serge Gnabry, Thomas Muller, Kingsley Coman; Robert Lewandowski.
The return of the Champions League after the latest international break once again pits the champions of Germany against the champions of neighbouring Austria as Salzburg visit the Allianz Arena in Munich. A win tonight for the hosts would see them claim their place in the next round of the competition whilst the visitors are in desperate need of all three points as they try to hunt down Atletico Madrid who currently occupy second spot in Group A.
