Commentary

Thank you for joining our coverage, we hope you enjoyed the game. Until next time, goodbye!
Leverkusen face a tough trip to Wolfsburg next, while Atletico host Espanyol in La Liga.
There goes the full-time whistle! Thomas' inexplicable first-half own goal set Atletico on the back foot before Volland doubled his side's lead with a fine finish in the second period. The hosts looked to be coasting to victory until Amiri's rash challenge reduced his side to 10 men, and Morata snatched a stoppage-time consolation and was denied a last-gasp winner at the death by Hradecky! It finishes 2-1 to Leverkusen!
90' + 6' FULL-TIME: BAYER LEVERKUSEN 2-1 ATLETICO MADRID
90' + 5' SAVE! WHAT A VITAL SAVE! Morata has the chance to level the scores in the final minute of stoppage time as he lashes towards the bottom-left corner from the right side of the box, but Hradecky sticks a leg out to deny him and preserve Leverkusen's win!
T. Partey
Assist
90' + 4' Thomas, desperate to make up for his earlier error, breaks the lines with good close control and a clever ball through.
Morata
Goal
90' + 4' GOAL!! Morata gets one back for Atletico! Thomas works some space on the edge of the box and drills it through for Morata, who takes a touch and smashes the ball past the advancing Hradecky! It's 2-1!
90' + 2' SAVE! Great save from Hradecky! Saul's shot takes a wicked deflection on its way through and the goalkeeper has to adjust sharply to keep the ball out!
90' Leverkusen have set up a low block now, trying to keep Atletico at arm's length and get out on the ball when they can.
A. Dragović
K. Havertz
88' Havertz comes off for a defender in Dragovic in Bosz's final change to shore up the defence.
86' Leverkusen are having to soak up pressure now as they look to see out the victory in the closing stages. Atletico sense an opportunity.
N. Amiri
Red Card
84' Amiri slides in recklessly on Arias, he's out of control and gets none of the ball. It's a straight red card for the Leverkusen winger, and his side are now down to 10 men!
83' CLOSE! Havertz meets a corner with his head well but can only power his header just over the bar from close range! That skimmed the roof of the net!
P. Retsos
Wendell
81' Wendell is now replaced by Retsos as Bosz throws on a more defensive player at full-back to see out the win.
K. Bellarabi
Yellow Card
79' Bellarabi also goes into the book as the final player of the four.
J. Tah
Yellow Card
79' Tah is the first of two Leverkusen men to be booked for their involvement in the melee.
J. Oblak
Yellow Card
79' Oblak is also, somewhat harshly, carded, although it looked as though he was trying to get between Morata and the Leverkusen players.
Morata
Yellow Card
79' A melee ensues in the penalty spot before the corner is taken, with Morata in particular engaging in a heated exchange with several Leverkusen players. It takes a few minutes to settle down and the referee has his card out, with the Atletico striker one of four men booked for their part in proceedings.
77' NO GOAL! Thomas very nearly scores another own goal as a corner nicks off his head and ricochets towards the bottom corner, but a combination of Oblak and a team-mate on the line smuggle it behind! Leverkusen players appeal but the referee shakes his head!
76' CHANCE! Felipe passes out to Saul but the makeshift left-back is not even looking and Bellarabi pounces on the loose ball, eventually smashing an effort behind off Felipe! That was so sloppy.
75' NO GOAL! Arias finds Vitolo inside the box and the forward smashes a low cross to Morata, who turns in at the back post, but the striker is well offside and the flag duly goes up.
73' Great interception from Tah as he flicks an outstanding cross away from the head of Morata lurking behind him. That's an important intervention.
71' SAVE! Lemar, finding himself on the right, cuts in onto his left and smacks a fierce effort at goal from range, but Hradecky does well to read it all the way and make a solid stop.
H. Herrera
Á. Correa
70' Correa is now replaced by Herrera - an odd change as a forward departs for a midfielder. Koke returns to the flank and Vitolo partners Morata in attack.
68' Atletico have failed to score in five of their last eight away group stage matches in the Champions League - can they find a way through in Germany tonight?
66' SAVE! Saul makes a good run into the box and stoops to head a corner at goal, but Hradecky is positioned well to keep the low effort out!
J. Baumgartlinger
C. Aránguiz
65' Aranguiz comes off for Baumgartlinger in the Leverkusen midfield as Bosz looks for fresh legs to see the game out.
63' SAVE! Lemar dinks the ball through for Correa in behind, and the forward takes it on his chest before shooting on the swivel, but pressure from Wendell sees him scuff the effort into the ground and Hradecky claims!
62' SAVE! Lemar wins a free-kick and brushes himself down to take it, but Hradecky reads the effort well and makes a confident save low down to his left.
Vitolo
Diego Costa
61' Costa, who has barely touched the ball all night, comes off for Vitolo as Simeone wastes no time in making a second change.
59' SAVE! Weiser gets to the edge of the area and unleashes a stinging drive that Oblak does superbly to keep within his grasp. That was a well-struck effort.
57' Atletico have conceded two goals or more in a game on just three previous occasions this season. Simeone will be furious that his side - who pride themselves on their defence - have been breached twice.
K. Bellarabi
Assist
55' Bellarabi had plenty of time and space on the right flank to generate a fierce, low cross that did well to find Volland past a number of Atletico defenders.
K. Volland
Goal
55' GOAL!! VOLLAND MAKES IT 2-0!! Bellarabi fizzes a fine cross in that evades Hermoso and Volland takes one touch to set himself before firing in a low effort past Oblak and into the bottom-right corner!
53' The reshuffle has seen Saul move to left-back, with Lemar going out to the left wing and Koke slotting in alongside Thomas in the centre of midfield.
T. Lemar
Renan Lodi
52' Simeone makes an unusually attacking change, replacing left-back Lodi with a winger in Lemar.
51' Saul cannons a long-range shot off the head of Aranguiz and the midfielder is down, requiring some treatment.
M. Weiser
Yellow Card
50' Weiser goes in late on Hermoso and picks up a deserved yellow card. He completely mistimed that.
48' NO PENALTY! Lodi takes the ball down on the left side of the box and Bellarabi sprints back to make the challenge, with the left-back hitting the turf and appealing for a spot-kick. It looked like a fair challenge, however, and the referee dismisses the Brazilian's complaints.
46' We're back under way for the second half!
It's been a cagey affair so far, with Atletico largely restricting Leverkusen to efforts from outside the box. The hosts have been the better side, however, while Simeone's two strikers have hardly touched the ball. That will have to change in the second half if they are to get back into the game.
There goes the half-time whistle! Atletico find themselves trailing after a bizarre own goal from Thomas, who headed inexplicably into his own net under no real pressure as he tried to clear his lines. Leverkusen need nothing less than a win to keep their qualification hopes alive and they are halfway to what would be an important result.
45' + 1' HALF-TIME: BAYER LEVERKUSEN 1-0 ATLETICO MADRID
45' There will be just one minute of added time as Leverkusen look to take their lead into the break.
43' OVER! Lodi thinks he's been played into space on the left side of the box and smacks one effort off a defender before sending a second shot high over the bar, but the offside flag goes up to spare his blushes.
T. Partey
Own Goal
41' OWN GOAL!! WHAT A HOWLER! Leverkusen lead 1-0 but they have Thomas to thank for a bizarre own goal. The inital delivery is dealt with scruffily at the near post by a combination of Oblak and Costa but the ball ends up back in the box. Thomas, under no real pressure, mistimes his jump completely and skews a header into the corner of his own net! Oblak had no chance with that!
40' Havertz spreads the ball wide to Bellarabi on the right after a driving run through midfield but the winger wastes the opportunity with a poor touch and allows his cross to be closed down.
38' CROSSBAR! Felipe rises to head another corner clear at the near post but ends up inadvertently flicking it onto his own crossbar! Oblak was stranded and the visitors have got away with one there.
37' CHANCE! Oblak comes out to deal with a corner but he's under pressure and the ball is very nearly diverted in, but a touch off the head of Arias sees it loop over the bar!
36' BLOCK! Wendell smashes an effort into Lodi as he gets into the box and wins a corner off his fellow left-back. The German side are working their way closer to the goal.
34' Atletico are just starting to press a little higher up the field than they were previously, with their change in shape allowing them to cover a wider area of the field. Leverkusen are still trying to play out from the back, but they are running into more trouble now.
32' Aranguiz strikes firmly from distance and is rewarded with a deflection off Saul that earns a corner, but Leverkusen can't make the most of the set-piece.
30' Hermoso does well to arch round Bellarabi as he slides to challenge him inside the box, winning the ball cleanly. Excellent tackle.
28' Simeone appears to have reverted to a flat 4-4-2 in recognition of the issues Atletico were experiencing on the flanks, with Koke on the left and Correa on the right of the midfield four.
26' Correa just fails to slip the ball through for the run of Costa, but Arias gets it back in the box for Morata to head, but the striker was fouling his marker and a free-kick is awarded.
24' Atletico's narrow midfield diamond is leaving them very exposed on the flanks, allowing Leverkusen to get forward and use their flying full-backs to double-up on the La Liga side's wide defenders.
22' Morata breaks the lines as he gets to the byline and dinks back across goal. It's half-cleared to Saul on the edge of the box, but the midfielder shanks his shot well wide of goal.
21' CHANCE! The first real chance of the game falls Leverkusen's way as Amiri does well to get down the left and pick out Volland in the box, but the forward's volley lacks conviction and Oblak saves comfortably!
20' BLOCK! Demirbay gets forward from midfield and sweeps a firm effort at goal from the edge of the area, but it's blocked away. Still no inroads into the penalty area.
19' OVER! Arias has a pop from outside the box, but he becomes the latest full-back in this match to send the ball sailing over the bar and into the stands.
18' From that period of Ateltico possession, Leverkusen launch a counter-attack of their own as the roles are reversed, but a poor pass at the end of the move sees the danger snuffed out.
16' Atletico are growing as an attacking force but can't quite pick themselves an opening as they take possession of the ball for a spell.
14' Another long-range effort misses the mark, and this time it's Bellarabi who has a go from distance. Leverkusen can't work their way into the penalty area.
13' Atletico are just soaking up pressure at the moment, sitting off the ball and resisting waves of attacks as they wait patiently for a counter-attacking opportunity.
11' Leverkusen find a way into space down the right but Wendell decides to shoot from miles out and blasts it straight into the stands. Awful decision from the left-back.
9' WIDE! Volland takes aim from considerable distance as Leverkusen find a way through on the left, but his effort is always curling wide of the target.
8' Atletico are allowing Leverkusen the ball in their own half, but are closing passing lanes and pressing sharply as soon as the halfway line is crossed.
6' Atletico look to have started with a midfield diamond, as opposed to their more conventional 4-4-2, with Thomas sitting in front of the back four and Correa playing just off the two strikers.
4' OVER! Volland flicks a corner at goal but it ends up well over the bar. He pleads for another set-piece but the referee waves his claims away.
2' Weiser lines one up from outside the box but drags it well off-target as he registers the first shot of the game.
1' We're off in Leverkusen!
Leverkusen are one of just two clubs to lose their three Champions League games this season, along with Atalanta, and manager Bosz has won none of his first nine in the competition (D2 L7).
The history in this fixture favours Atletico, who are unbeaten against Leverkusen in their last four Champions League meetings, winning three of those games – they’ve only won more against PSV (four).
Leverkusen boss Peter Bosz makes two changes to the side that lost 2-1 against Borussia Monchengladbach last time out, dropping Baumgartlinger and Alario to the bench, while Aranguiz and Amiri take their places. Diego Simeone also makes two alterations to his Atletico side as he shuffles the pack after a 1-1 draw with Sevilla, with Arias and Costa replacing Trippier and Lemar. Joao Felix remains out with an ankle injury.
Atletico Madrid substitutes: Thomas Lemar, Ivan Saponjic, Hector Herrera, Antonio Adan, Vitolo, Marcos Llorente, Kieran Trippier
Atletico Madrid XI (4-1-2-1-2): Jan Oblak; Santiago Arias, Felipe, Mario Hermoso, Renan Lodi; Thomas Partey; Koke, Saul Niguez; Angel Correa; Alvaro Morata, Diego Costa
Bayer Leverkusen substitutes: Julian Baumgartlinger, Paulinho, Moussa Diaby, Ramazan ozcan, Aleksandar Dragovic, Lucas Alario, Panagiotis Retsos
Bayer Leverkusen XI (4-2-3-1): Lukas Hradecky; Mitchell Weiser, Jonathan Tah, Sven Bender, Wendell; Kerem Demirbay, Charles Aranguiz; Karim Bellarabi, Kai Havertz, Nadiem Amiri; Kevin Volland
Leverkusen will not be relishing the task of facing Atletico tonight after a poor run of form that has yielded just one win from their last seven games across all competitions. The La Liga side have not lost any of their last 11 competitive matches and will be looking to extend that run tonight.
