Azam FC claimed a 3-0 win over Ihefu FC in a Tanzania Mainland League assignment at Azam Complex on Thursday night.
Iddi Selemani's brace and Ayoub Lyanga's strike was all the Chamazi-based charges needed to register maximum points.
Leaders Yanga SC and reigning champions Simba SC had dropped points after draws against Polisi Tanzania and Tanzania Prisons and it was vital for the hosts to collect maximum points to reduce the gap at the top.
The George Lwandamina-led charges showed their hunger for maximum points from the way they started the game. It took them just nine minutes to get their first goal.
Defender Abdul Hamahama managed to get forward and brought a good cross in and Selemani nodded the ball into the back of the net. It was the only goal in the first half despite the numerous chances created by either side.
The 2014 champions needed just six minutes after the break to get their second goal. Selemani picked Lyanga in a good area and the Taifa Star unleashed a fierce strike that left the goalkeeper helpless.
With the clock hitting the 90th minute, it seemed there was no other goal forthcoming until Selemani was slipped in once again, and he kept his cool to complete his brace.
In another top-tier assignment, Kinondoni Municipal Council (KMC) FC, picked a vital 1-0 win over Ruvu Shooting.
The Taxmen struck in the 34th minute courtesy of Lusajo Mwaikenda, and despite giving their best, the administrative side failed to get the equaliser.
After Thursday's matches, Azam, who are third on the table, are now on 44 points from the 24 matches played. They have managed to win 12, drawn eight and lost four. The Ice-cream Makers have scored 34 goals and conceded 17.
Ihefu are placed 16th with 20 points from the 24 games played as well. The debutants have won five, drawn as many and lost 14 games. They have scored 14 goals and conceded 34 and are in real danger of dropping into the relegation zone.
