Atlético Madrid v PSV Live Commentary,
Brought to you by
Shots Off Target
Shots On Target
That's all for our live coverage from Madrid, thanks for following along. Goodbye!
Juanfran scores the decisive penalty as the Rojiblancos book their place in the quarter-finals despite a spirited effort from Phillip Cocu's side. It's a tough one to swallow for PSV in the end, as they will feel they deserved better - and there's a case to be made - but Atletico show tremendous composure in the end to go a perfect eight-for-eight from the spot.
JUANFRAN SENDS ATLETICO THROUGH! The defender keeps his composure to slot home and Simeone's side are through to the quarters!
THERE'S THE MISS! Heartbreak for Narsingh as he rattles it off the bar! It's so hard on him, coming on in the final minutes of extra-time.
LUIS KEEPS IT ALIVE! No doubt about that one, sending Zoet the wrong way.
OBLAK DIDN'T EVEN MOVE! He's indecisive there and Arias is able to roll a tame effort into the corner.
7-7! Gimenez keeps the 100 per cent record in this shootout in-tact!
STILL NO ONE HAS MISSED! Pressure shifts back onto Atletico as Lestienne sends Oblak the wrong way. 6-5 to the visitors.
REMARKABLY CALM! Atletico are going out if Torres misses, but he remains cool and smashes one into the ceiling of the goal!
UNBELIEVABLE! Zoet gets both his hands to the effort, and I'm not sure how that's managed to squeeze in! Saul can breathe a big sigh of relief!
MORENO SCORES! Another terrific penalty! Oblak is getting nowhere near these.
PSV LEAD AGAIN! Still no one has missed from the spot! Bruma is the first defender to take and he rolls it in with Oblak heading the wrong way.
GREAT COMPOSURE! Koke, who missed in the shootout last season against Leverkusen, coverts here to tie us at three.
EXCELLENT TAKE! Another perfect penalty from the Dutch outfit, this time it's Propper who converts.
NEARLY SAVED! Zoet was so close to getting to that effort from Gabi, but is just inches away from ushering it beyond the post!
PERFECT PENALTY! Oblak had no chance at keeping that out as Guardado slots it just inside the post!
ATLETICO LEVEL! Griezmann sends Zoet the wrong way and we're level at one.
M. van Ginkel
FIRST BLOOD TO PSV! Oblak guesses right and gets a piece of Van Ginkel's penalty, but can't keep it out!
Well, how lucky are you feeling? That's what it's come to at the Calderon as neither side does enough to break the deadlock, and for a second season in a row, Atletico are off to penalties in the Champions League last 16!
M. van Ginkel
Van Ginkel also goes into the book here...
Guardado goes into the book for a late challenge, but it hardly matters at this point. We're off to penalties!
There will be one minute added on before we head to spot-kicks.
L. de Jong
Interesting swap here from Cocu who takes off his top scorer Luuk de Jong with penalties looming. On in his place is the speedy Luciano Narsingh. Perhaps he's hoping they can nick it in the final minutes.
NOT TOO FAR AWAY! Atletico caught in quicksand as PSV break in numbers on the counter. Arias takes too long to get a shot off, however, as it's blocked. Pressure stays on though, and Guardado curls a strike just beyond the far corner from the top of the area!
Speculative effort from Gabi, from a long way out, which was never going to hit the target. Groans can be heard throughout the stadium as Atletico again waste possession. Back the other way come PSV, but Propper's cross is just too high for the pair of Lestienne and De Jong.
It's slowed to an almost walking pace now. These players are running in sand. Creativity is in short supply and frustration has set in amongst the Atletico supporters. The loudest noise is coming from the travelling fans who are thrilled with what they've seen from their team.
STAT: PSV have a record of three wins and two defeats in penalties in UEFA competition, and they were victorious in their most recent attempt in 2008 over Tottenham in the Europa League round of 16.
There's just no breaking down this PSV defence as far as Atletico are concerned right now, though there's still time for them to change that. The visitors aren't showing nearly as much attacking intent in extra-time, however, as they try to see this game through for penalties.
Off they go again! One moment of magic can change everything as a place in the quarter-finals is up for grabs.
Trying to decide which team holds the advantage ahead of the final 15 minutes of extra-time would be like splitting hairs. There's no separating these two sides, as the players head over to grab a deserved breather before the second half gets underway. This tie appears destined to head to penalties.
Such a waste! Atletico are awarded a free-kick a few yards outside the area, and tension builds as they get set to take... but in the end it's lifted well over the bar from Gabi as the first period of extra-time comes to a close.
The chances were coming rather frequently in the second half. They may not have always been clear cut, but there were always opportunities being had. That couldn't be father from the case so far in extra-time, however, as neither side has managed to find much of an opening.
It almost opens up for Lestienne as Propper tries to squeeze a ball through for the substitute, but Atletico are wise to it. Juanfran hesitates to clear the danger, however, but is let off the hook as a handball awards the hosts a free-kick inside their own penalty area.
STAT: Atletico went to extra-time at this same stage of the competition last season against Bayer Leverkusen. A pair of 1-0 results for the two home sides saw the tie into penalties, with the Rojiblancos eventually advancing.
Atletico are taking a much more patient approach in possession, passing the ball around in the attacking half, waiting for an opening. PSV aren't affording one, however. The visitors have such an excellent shape about them in defence and they'll be happy to give Atletico all the possession they want on the fringes of the final third.
JUST OVER! Brilliant delivery by Koke from an Atletico corner, which Lucas runs on to meet. He gets all of the ball with his head, but can only bury his face in his hands as he watches it sail over the bar. He knows what a great moment that could have been for him.
It has been a rather cagey start to the extra period in the Spanish capital, with tired legs undoubtedly starting to set in. PSV have to try and use their pace to test what is now a very inexperienced Atletico back four with Godin off.
Here we go!
We're headed for extra-time at the Vicente Calderon! Jurgen Locadia and Fernando Torres both struck the frame of the goal in the second half, as each side came close to breaking the deadlock. Nonetheless, we've completed 180 minutes of football between these teams over two legs and still await the first goal!
Zoet makes his first mistake of the tie, coming out amidst a mess of bodies to try and punch clear a free-kick, but can't get it away. Luckily for him, Moreno is on hand to head behind for a corner.
The board goes up to indicate three minutes of stoppage time. Can either side find a winner or are we set for another half-hour of football at the Calderon?
Atletico make their final change as teenager Lucas Hernandez comes on to replace Diego Godin. Presumably he has picked up a knock, otherwise it's a curious change from Simeone.
Maxime Lestienne, who was considered a doubt to participate with a calf injury, is brought on for the final minutes and possibly extra-time as he replaces Locadia.
TURNED ASIDE AGAIN BY ZOET! Torres finds himself in a one-on-one position up against Bruma inside the area. He turns it onto his left and cannons a shot towards the near post from in close, but the PSV keeper makes a terrific reactionary stop to turn it off the post and out!
GOAL-KICK SAYS CLATTENBURG! The referee is in an excellent position to make the call, and gets it right in the end as Luis goes down following a challenge from Arias inside the area, but the PSV full-back was simply standing his ground.
Atletico are sending plenty of balls into the box, but Zoet is always on hand to deal with them. The keeper has been simply outstanding over the two legs and is a massive part of the reason PSV are still in it with a very real chance of progressing.
Into the final 10 minutes now as the prospect of extra-time looms larger. There's absolutely no way of telling who may nick this result, in what has been such an even contest. Atletico are comfortable in defence, but full credit has to be given to PSV who are playing like Champions League regulars, despite most of their players having never participated in a knockout tie before this.
Finding space on the break is PSV, but Arias' effort is blocked behind by Luis for a corner. The visitors send bodies forward in anticipation of the delivery from Propper, but it's very poor in the end from the midfielder as it's cleared at the near post by the first defender.
SENSATIONAL EFFORT! Torres gets into space on the left and as he steps inside the area, he sends a wonderfully improvised chip towards the far post. It completely takes Zoet out of the equation, but sails just inches over the bar as it lands on the roof of the net!
Carrasco has grown tired over the last 15 minutes or so and his impact has petered out, which prompts Simeone to bring on Matias Kranevitter.
Cocu does make his first change, but it's a straight swap at left-back as Joshua Brenet comes on to replace Willems.
STAT: Atletico Madrid have kept 12 clean sheets in their last 16 Champions League games. At the Calderon, Diego Simeone's men have kept a clean sheet in 11 of their last 13 Champions League matches.
The match is becoming a bit stretched as we enter the final 20 minutes. PSV are starting to up their intent on the break, but their midfield trio is having to do an awful lot of running. Fatigue could become an issue soon for the visitors and you have to wonder how long Cocu will wait to make a change.
BIG DECISION FOR THE REFEREE! Locadia sprints forward on the break and cuts into the centre before being tripped up atop the area. There seemed to be clear contact, but Mark Clattenburg waves play on! Back at the other end a terrific tackle from Moreno denies Torres a clear sight of goal.
Atletico have reverted back to their tactics from the first half, again trying to build through the middle. Their best chances have all come when they get down the flanks and run at these PSV full-backs, but they're getting away from that again.
L. de Jong
De Jong goes into the book, moments after Atletico players were shouting for a second yellow on Locadia. The striker pushed into the back of Luis and now both of PSV's forward are on a booking - far from ideal as they're asked to press high up the pitch.
STAT: PSV Eindhoven hadn't reached the knockout stages of the Champions League since 2006/07. They were eliminated by Liverpool in the quarter-finals.
MISSED CHANCE AT THE OTHER END NOW! The game is really coming to life as both sides push for the crucial first goal. Luis cuts onto his right atop the area and his strike is pushed high into the air by Zoet. Carrasco arrives to follow-up, but makes horrible contact as his volley lifts miles over the bar!
That's a warning from PSV nonetheless. It shows how cautious Atletico have to be in sending bodies forward in search of a breakthrough, because all it takes is one successful counter from the Eredivisie outfit to turn the tie on its head!
OH HOW CLOSE THAT WAS! Unbelievable! Super break from PSV as Propper is sprung down the left. He picks out Guardado in the centre, who lays it off for Locadia. The forward's strike curls beyond the reach of Oblak and off the inside of the post, before De Jong's header from the rebound is somehow cleared off the line by Filipe Luis! Major let-off for Atletico!
It's Torres time! Fernando, that is, as Diego Simeone makes the first change of the night. It's Augusto who gives way - very positive switch from the hosts who are showing no hesitation in going for it now.
STAT: PSV have never scored more than two goals in their last 37 Champions League games. The last time they did was in the 2005 semi-final second leg against AC Milan (3-1). Phillip Cocu netted twice in that match.
Good long-range strike from Augusto as he finds a pocket of space in the centre and shouts for a pass. It comes to him and he tees himself up with a fine first touch, though his effort is kept out by the strong hands of Zoet. Confident goalkeeping, that.
Outstanding technique! Absolutely fantastic play down the left-hand side from Carrasco to navigate his way beyond Arias, before delivering a terrific ball across the face of goal. No one is there to meet it, however, which allows Willems to scramble it behind for a corner. Positive start from Atletico.
Nervy start to the half for PSV, as a mix-up between Moreno and Isimat sees the ball fall for Saul following a corner. The midfielder can't sort his footing, however, to get the shot off, as Zoet is able to bravely dive in and collect.
Back underway at the Calderon!
This last-16 tie still awaits the first goal as these sides play out to an entertaining scoreless draw after 45 minutes at the Vicente Calderon. It was a very even half of football in the Spanish capital, with PSV showing plenty of ambition and quality themselves, but as things stand we would be headed for extra-time. Who, if anyone, can find the breakthrough? There's no edge to be had as of yet.
HALF-TIME: ATLETICO 0-0 PSV.
Gabi makes a crucial intervention to deny Arias a clear sight of goal as the board goes up to indicate one minute of stoppage time to be added on at the end of this first half.
DOUBLE-BLOCK! Atletico very much on top at the moment and it results in a pair of chances inside the area. First it's Griezmann's strike which Moreno blocks, before Saul's rebound is turned aside smartly by Bruma. Excellent defensive work by the visitors, but they're struggling a bit at the moment to break out of their own end.
Atletico are picking up the tempo as they try to generate a bit of momentum heading into the half-time break. PSV have bodies back in numbers when the hosts get forward, however, which is making it quite difficult on them to try and navigate an opening in the final third.
STAT: Diego Simeone has won 11 of his 14 Champions League games at the Calderon as Atletico manager (D2, L1).
The flag goes up for offside, so it wouldn't have counted anyway, but Griezmann's header forced Zoet into an absolutely remarkable save. The PSV keeper's confidence is at a high right now and it looks as though it will take something special to beat him. He was equally on point in the first leg as well.
Atletico are far too narrow in their approach. They're so insistent on building through the centre, which is where all the PSV bodies are. The visitors are winning the ball back in quick succession as a result, and spending a lot more time on the front foot than these home fans would like to see.
The longer this game remains scoreless, the more the pressure will shift onto the shoulders of Atletico. Should PSV strike first at any point, the hosts would need two goals to advance. The nil-nil draw in the first leg was a better result for PSV than many gave them credit for, having not conceded the all-important away goal.
PSV are applying some excellent pressure as the momentum tilts largely in their favour. Cocu's side have made no reservations about their desire to grab an away goal, and Atletico are playing on their heels as a result. Simeone is quite agitated on the touchline - they need to make some tactical adjustments at the break.
Locadia picks up the first yellow card of the night for a needless challenge on Gimenez. It's such a poor decision from the forward, who clearly didn't learn from Gaston Pereiro's sending off in the first leg. He's going to be walking a tight line the rest of the way now- that's if he's not withdrawn at one point as a precaution.
STAT: PSV have never beaten Atletico Madrid in European competition (D1 L2). They've also never won an away game against a Spanish team in the Champions League (D1 L3).
HOW CLOSE WAS THAT?! A spectacular touch from De Jong through to Van Ginkel sees him get beyond his marker along the right side of the area, and he delivers a teasing ball across the face of goal. Oblak gets a hand to it, but has no idea where the ball is headed, as De Jong so nearly pounces on the rebound! That was an inch away from arriving at the feet of Locadia had the keeper not intervened.
Propper shows great determination to win the ball in attack, but Locadia slips as he attempts to get on the end of a pass, which allows Atletico to break. Carrasco is isolated on the break, but puts in some excellent running to win a free-kick on the left following a foul from Arias - though the chance is wasted by the hosts.
Koke is proving the catalyst for this Atletico team in attack. He's moving so well off the ball to get into space and make himself a viable outlet, while his deliveries into the area have proved so inviting for the likes of Griezmann and Carrasco. His latest cross forces Zoet to be sharp off his line.
Phillip Cocu has plenty of Champions League experience as a player, reaching the semi-finals with this same PSV side in 2005. He knows just how much an away goal can change the shape of a tie and the attacking intent of his team in this first half so far shows they are taking the initiative into their own hands.
STAT: PSV have conceded only one goal in their last four Champions League games - it was a penalty against CSKA Moscow.
This is more like it from Atletico. They're starting to figure out the layout of this PSV defence, as the chances begin to pile up. A teasing delivery by Koke from a corner is met by Godin, but the centre-half lifts his header onto the roof of the goal, much to the relief of Zoet.
TERRIFIC SAVE! Much better from the hosts! Simeone has been quite animated and nervy on his touchline, but that should do plenty to help please him. A delightful ball over the top from Juanfran finds Koke in space, and he does brilliantly to pick out Griezmann in the centre, but the Frenchman is denied by Zoet from point-blank range!
Atletico are trying to figure out the shape of this PSV team. They like to play these intricate little one-two passes in possession, but they aren't being afforded that luxury early on here as PSV are so quick to get bodies behind the ball when they give it away. It's been quite the encouraging start for the visitors.
The Eredivisie outfit muster their first real chance on the break, with Van Ginkel sprung into space down the left. His cross finds its way to Moreno atop the area, and the centre-half sees his volley deflected behind for a corner. It's a real sign of their ambition, seeing the defender get on the front foot there.
Cocu's tactics seem to have taken a few by surprise. PSV haven't come out with the intent on playing for the nil-nil draw, instead keen on playing with the ball at their feet and patiently building in attack. They certainly appear more comfortable than they did in the first leg, not at all overcome by the magnitude of the occasion.
STAT: Atletico Madrid are in the knockout stages of the Champions League for the third consecutive season, a first in their history.
Atletico aren't the type of side to try and boss possession. They're willing to let PSV play with the ball a bit, but the visitors won't be too keen on sending bodies forward either. It's going to be a tactical battle without a doubt, between two sides who like to attack with pace on the break.
First chance falls to the hosts! Atletico move the ball so quickly from the back foot to the front, as Griezmann is presented with possession inside the final third. The Frenchman slides a pass through for Carrasco, but Zoet is smartly off his line to collect ahead of the Belgian. There was just too much weight behind that pass.
Underway in Madrid! PSV in their light-blue away strip, with Atletico sporting their red and white stripes.
There's a terrific atmosphere inside a packed house at the Vicente Calderon as the match gets set for kick-off. It should be a spirited encounter in the Spanish capital!
Phillip Cocu has opted to play with five at the back, bringing Nicolas Isimat-Mirin in as a third centre-half, alongside Jeffrey Bruma and Hector Moreno, at the expense of forward Luciano Narsingh. The Eindhoven outfit keep the midfield duo of Davy Propper, Andres Guardado and Marco van Ginkel in-tact, while leading scorer Luuk de Jong is a welcome return from suspension. He was forced to miss the first leg, but is back in the side today with Gaston Pereiro - who was shown red at the Philips Stadion - obviously unavailable.
Diego Simeone makes a trio of changes from the first leg, reinstating Jose Gimenez in the starting line-up at the expense of the injured Stefan Savic (hamstring) - though the Montenegro defender is available off the bench. He partners Diego Godin at the back, with Juanfran and Filipe Luis on the flanks. Augusto Fernandez also comes in as a holding midfielder, replacing Oliver Torres, while Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco is called into attack in support of Antonie Griezmann. Luciano Vietto and Fernando Torres are kept on the bench.
SUBS: Schaars, Narsingh, Lestienne, Jozefzoon, Brenet, Pasveer, Hendrix.
PSV (5-3-2): Zoet; Arias, Bruma, Isimat, Moreno, Willems; Guardado, Propper, Van Ginkel; De Jong, Locadia.
SUBS: Moya, Jesus Gamez, Lucas, Kranevitter, Correa, Vietto, F. Torres.
ATLETICO (4-5-1): Oblak; Juanfran, Gimenez, Godin, Luis; Saul, Gabi, Augusto, Koke, Carrasco; Griezmann.
Atletico cruised to a 3-0 victory on the weekend, their fourth in a row in the league, while PSV slipped up in a 1-1 home draw against Heerenveen. Diego Simeone’s outfit are very much locked into second place in the league, with a spot in the top three all but guaranteed, affording them the ability to focus their efforts on the Champions League. Phillip Cocu’s side don’t have the same luxury, however, leading Ajax by just a point at the summit – and the two are set to face off on Sunday. It sets up as a look-ahead spot for PSV, but given the magnitude of this clash, they are more likely to let their league form suffer a bit than holding back in the slightest this evening.
Hello and welcome to live coverage from the Vicente Caldron as Atletico Madrid play host to PSV in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie! A scoreless draw in the first leg in Eindhoven has set up a finely poised clash tonight in the Spanish capital. Both goalkeepers had to come up big to preserve the 0-0 tie, until a Gaston Pereira red card gave Atletico a chance to steal a win in the final 20 minutes – which they were unable to take. They remain favourites to advance, largely as a result of their excellent defensive record at home, but all it takes is one away goal from the Eredivisie outfit to turn the tie on its head.
