Commentary

That's it from me tonight. I'm off for a big lie down. Until the next time, goodbye!
The result takes Villa up to second, with a 100 per cent record but having played a game less than the leaders. Liverpool are fifth and they face the league leaders after the international break - at Goodison Park. Boss!
The Premier League. Wow. Liverpool ship seven for the first time in more than half a century, and Villa were absolutely value for money. They could have had more. It was four by the break, Watkins with a sizzling hat-trick, McGinn with a deflected strike and a Salah finish in response. Liverpool never got to grips with Villa's press or their fast-pace attacking, and they were made to pay. Grealish and Barkley had shots deflect in, Grealish later adding his second after being given the freedom of Villa Park by Liverpool's high line. Simply incredible.
90' + 4' FULL-TIME: ASTON VILLA 7-2 LIVERPOOL
90' + 3' El Mohamady gets the ball on the right and there are three unmarked Villa players in the area, but for some reason he doesn't cross.
90' + 3' Alexander-Arnold hits the free-kick into the wall.
M. Nakamba
Yellow Card
90' + 2' Nakamba fouls Salah at the edge of the area.
90' + 1' Three minutes of stoppage time.
90' Traore gets in on goal and it takes a great tackle from Milner at the edge of the six-yard box to stop him.
89' Credit to Villa, they've got seven goals against the champions and they're still trying to score more. So are Liverpool, but at some point they should probably stop it, because they keep conceding.
Bertrand Traoré
Trézéguet
87' Trezeguet's night is over. New boy Traore comes on.
85' Watkins hits the bar! It's almost eight as he slides to meet a cross from the right, and he just can't keep it down. The ball isn't cleared but Barkley and Grealish can't find room to squeeze it in. Adrian, for some reason, was standing in line with the post when Watkins met the ball.
83' Milner finds Jota with a nice ball from deep. He connects firmly with his header, but Martinez makes a good save at the top-right corner.
82' The ball sits up for Nakamba at the edge of the area. Adrian parried a shot back into the area and Wijnaldum flicked it on with a backheel, but the keeper gets his body behind the shot as the substitute hits it first-time.
Ahmed El Mohamady
M. Cash
80' Cash has earned a rest as well. El Mohamady comes on.
M. Nakamba
Douglas Luiz
80' Luiz, who has put in an excellent shift in midfield, is off for Nakamba.
79' Salah finds Minamino with space to shoot at the right of the area, but it's blocked. Villa haven't let their standards slip at the back.
77' Liverpool haven't conceded seven goals in a game since 1963. The defending champions of England haven't conceded seven goals in a game Arsenal in 1953.
J. McGinn
Assist
75' McGinn gets an assist after finding Grealish in the centre circle with the Liverpool half to himself.
J. Grealish
Goal
75' IT'S SEVEN! GREALISH SCORES! He's put through on goal down that left channel yet again, and he has all the time in the world to stroke it past Adrian.
74' Jota goes down under a light touch from Cash as he tries to get on the end of a cross, but the ball is already in Martinez's hands anyway. Not a lot in that.
73' You probably didn't need to be told this, but this is the first time ever that Manchester United and Liverpool have conceded six on the same day. History is made.
72' Watkins is put through on goal. He might be offside but Adrian comes out and makes a good save with his outstretched foot, so there's no need for the flag.
70' If you're Liverpool now, are you thinking damage limitation, or try to salvage some pride with another goal or two?
J. Milner
Roberto Firmino
68' Firmino off, Milner on. Grealish has today become the first Villa player to assist three goals in a Premier League match since Milner back in 2010.
68' Liverpool have conceded six goals for the first time since Steven Gerrard's farewell match against Stoke in 2015.
O. Watkins
Assist
66' Watkins has an assist to go with his hat-trick against the English champions. Money well spent.
J. Grealish
Goal
66' GOAL! SIX! SIX GOALS! Grealish gets in on the act, and yet again it's a horrible deflection. Villa press Firmino in midfield, Watkins finds Grealish in his customary place on the left and his right-footed shot takes a huge deflection off Fabinho and into the bottom right.
64' Grealish picks out Barkley in behind with a looping pass from the left. Barkley controls it nicely in the air but the high ball gives Van Dijk time to get back and rob him before he can take a second touch.
62' Villa look to repeat the trick from Watkins' third goal, a free-kick deep on the right fired towards the far post. Again he's left totally unmarked but this time the delivery isn't there, and Adrian takes a simple catch.
C. Jones
J. Gomez
61' Jones is on for Gomez. It's nothing if not attacking.
Roberto Firmino
Assist
60' Firmino gets the assist for a nice ball into Salah.
Mohamed Salah
Goal
60' GOAL! Salah has his second, it's 5-2! Firmino finds him at the edge of the area and he takes one touch before firing into the bottom-right corner with his left foot.
59' Jones is getting ready to come on for Liverpool.
58' I don't have the figures in front of me, but I can't imagine Manchester United and Liverpool have conceded five or more on the same day too many times before.
57' Grealish's third assist of the match. Before tonight, he had never registered two in a single Premier League game.
J. Grealish
Assist
55' It was a simple pass to tee him up at the edge of the area, but it's another assist for Grealish.
R. Barkley
Goal
55' GOOOALLL! FIVE! BARKLEY! He's gone close more than once tonight and he gets his reward for some hard work in this game. He hits a left-footed effort from the edge of the area and it deflects again, spinning up off Alexander-Arnold's boot and into the top-right corner.
53' Firmino looks to chest down a loose ball in the area but it gets away from him, then Cash makes an excellent sliding challenge to keep it away from Jota.
51' Watkins does well to protect the ball as it bobbles on the halfway line and wins a foul from Gomez.
50' Jota looks to get away from Cash at the edge of the area, but fouls him as he gets past. Cash has played well tonight.
49' Firmino catches Grealish late on the halfway line and the Villa talisman howls in pain as he goes down.
47' Salah shows some quick feet as he looks to work some room for a shot at the right corner of the area, but Villa get bodies around him and win the ball back.
Douglas Luiz
Yellow Card
46' Luiz gets a yellow card early in the second half for pulling Minamino's shirt.
45' We're up and running for the second half.
T. Minamino
N. Keïta
45' Klopp makes a change at the break, Minamino on for Keita.
You shouldn't rule Liverpool out, of course. Not this Liverpool. But Villa are absolutely on it, and look capable of scoring more.
Well. Don't even try and claim you saw this coming. Aston Villa have been superb to a man but hats off to Watkins and Grealish in particular - they have tormented the champions. It started badly for Liverpool when Grealish seized on Adrian's loose pass and squared for Watkins to open the scoring, and he scored a stunner 15 minutes later to double the lead. Salah smashed home from close range but McGinn's long-range shot was deflected in by Van Dijk, before Watkins headed in for his hat-trick as Liverpool didn't bother to defend a free-kick.
45' + 4' HALF-TIME: ASTON VILLA 4-1 LIVERPOOL
45' + 3' Mings catches Jota with his studs after passing the ball, and play stops for a second. It was painful, but it definitely wasn't a foul.
45' + 2' Salah finds Robertson in space in the penalty area. He waits for the ball to bounce and hits it towards goal with the inside of his left foot, but it's too close to Martinez. He perhaps should have put his foot through it.
45' + 1' Three minutes of stoppage time.
44' Between them, Liverpool and Manchester United have been champions of England 39 times, and conceded 10 goals today. What a weekend this has been!
43' Jota has looked bright in moments, but he gets a cross horribly wrong from the left and it soars out for a goal kick.
42' Watkins is the first player to score a Premier League hat-trick against Liverpool since Dimitar Berbatov in September 2010.
41' Alexander-Arnold crosses from the right but it's straight to Martinez.
Trézéguet
Assist
39' Trezeguet gets the assist for an inch-perfect cross.
O. Watkins
Goal
39' GOOALLL! It's FOUR, Watkins with a hat-trick! Wow! Liverpool are absolutely all over the place from a deep free kick. It comes to Trezeguet in acres of space on the left and he puts in a simple cross. Watkins is one of three players who could turn it in for Villa and he heads home with aplomb.
V. van Dijk
Yellow Card
38' Barkley baits Van Dijk into a yellow card. He tries to burst in behind yet again and though he over-runs it a little, he touches it beyond the defender and draws a foul.
37' Salah has now scored against 25 of the 26 teams he has faced in the Premier League. Only Swansea have managed to keep him at bay.
J. McGinn
Goal
35' GOOALLL! It's 3-1, McGinn via a deflection! He hits a low left-footed volley as a corner is cleared to him at the edge of the area, and the ball deflects off the shin of Van Dijk and past a wrong-footed Adrian.
34' Barkley is making some excellent runs here, but he just hasn't quite managed to find the end product yet. This time his touch takes him wide and Adrian saves his near-post shot, but he might have found room for a cross if he'd looked up.
Mohamed Salah
Goal
33' GOOOALL! Moments after Barkley misses, Salah scores and Liverpool have it back to 2-1! Jota brings the ball in from the left, Keita spins in the area to feed it on to Salah, and he thrashes it into the roof of the net. Game on!
31' Barkley goes close for a second time! Villa get bodies forward once again and it's Grealish with the slide-rule pass. Barkley does well to hold off Van Dijk and dink a shot past Adrian, but it bounces just past the right post.
30' Alexander-Arnold tries his luck from range after a corner is cleared, but Luiz gets straight out to him to charge it down.
28' Jota goes for a really cheeky effort and almost catches Martinez out. Coming in from the left at the edge of the area, he pulls out a disguised chip shot that the keeper has to react well to in order to step back and touch it over. That would have been an absolute beauty if he'd pulled it off.
26' Van Dijk goes down for a moment after taking a knock to the face from a Villa player, but it was nothing malicious and he's straight back up.
24' There were questions raised about the fee Villa paid for Watkins, but if you saw him at Brentford, you knew it was a good signing. He now has 28 league goals since the start of last season, the joint-most in England's top four tiers with Jamie Vardy and Aleksandar Mitrovic.
J. Grealish
Assist
22' Another assist for Grealish, that's his 10th since the beginning of last season.
O. Watkins
Goal
22' GOOOALLLL! It's 2-0, it's Watkins again, and it's an absolute stunner! Grealish threads him in down the left with an excellent pass and the new boy just drives infield, leaving Gomez in his wake before firing a rocket of a shot into the top-right corner. Brilliant.
21' Firmino makes a chance for himself. His first touch to collect Robertson's pass is silky, and he shows excellent feet to evade two defenders in the area before shooting left-footed from a tight angle. He hits it hard, but straight at Martinez. A little higher and he might have beaten him with power.
19' Martinez almost gifts Liverpool a goal with a sloppy pass of his own but there are defenders back to cover. Firmino takes his time and can't find a clean angle to shoot, then Keita's effort is blocked by Luiz.
17' Liverpool are looking good enough on the ball so far, but they do seem a little frail defensively. With this black and red kit, it feels a bit like an early Klopp-era game - which means it's entertaining at both ends!
15' Salah goes down in the area under a challenge from McGinn after Martinez comes out to deny Firmino a chance to shoot. It looks like a reasonable penalty shout, but there's nothing doing from the match referee or the VAR team.
14' Mings gets a good block in to stop a cross from the left, and Robertson's floated corner is headed away.
13' In 12 Premier League appearances for Liverpool, Adrian has made three errors leading directly to goals. Alisson has made four in 70.
12' This has been an excellent game so far. Villa aren't at all overawed by Liverpool but they aren't being too gung-ho in their attacks. The champions will have to work for it if they want to turn this around.
11' A couple of chances for Liverpool there. Keita carries the ball into the area and he perhaps just waits too long to shoot and it's immediately blocked. Moments later, Robertson looks to fire a shot across the keeper but it deflects behind for a corner.
10' Villa have started superbly here, but they almost found themselves in trouble there as Mings went on the attack. He did really well but the ball eventually went astray and Liverpool looked to counter, but Firmino was crowded out as he waited for support.
8' It should be 2-0! Grealish turns Van Dijk inside out as he comes infield from the left before poking the ball through the defender's legs to the onrushing Barkley, but the former Everton man scuffs his first-time shot wide from the centre of the penalty area.
7' Alexander-Arnold looks to float a cross in from deep on the right, but the ball drifts harmlessly out for a goal kick.
6' Six games unbeaten going into this game, Villa are currently on the longest unbeaten run in the Premier League. They're looking to win three in a row in the top flight for the first time since 2010.
J. Grealish
Assist
4' Villa pressed Liverpool well at the back and Grealish gets an assist for intercepting Adrian's woeful pass.
O. Watkins
Goal
4' GOOOALLL! Villa lead 1-0, Watkins scores his first Premier League goal after a horrible mistake from Adrian! He takes an age to control a pass from Robertson then sells Gomez dreadfully short. Grealish picks up the loose ball and squares it for Watkins to sidefoot home.
3' Cash turns swiftly away from Fabinho to the right of the area, working the ball back onto his left foot and crossing towards the far post. There's nobody there to attack it and Alexander-Arnold gets the shout to let it bounce behind for a goal kick.
2' Villa find Grealish in space on the left early on and he gets into the penalty area, but as he comes back onto his right foot, he can only find Robertson with his lofted cross towards the back post.
1' We're off! Liverpool, in their vaguely trippy black-on-black checkerboard kits, get us underway.
The teams are making their way out onto the Villa Park pitch, and we're moments away from kick-off.
Liverpool have won the last five league meetings between these sides, with an aggregate score of 15-3. They have only lost one of their last 19 league visits to Villa Park, winning the last six.
Barkley comes straight in for Villa after signing on loan from Chelsea. Sadio Mane has tested positive for Covid-19 so he’s recovering at home, and Jota gets the nod ahead of Minamino for his starting spot. Alisson picked up a shoulder injury after colliding with a team-mate in training, so Adrian is in goal.
