Commentary

That brings an end to our coverage of the Championship play-off final between Aston Villa and Derby County at Wembley Stadium. Thank you very much for joining us. Goodbye!
Aston Villa will now turn their attentions to preparing for life in the Premier League, whilst Derby County will look to regroup and go again in their attempts at securing promotion next season.
Following a highly entertaining play-off final, Aston Villa are set to return to the Premier League after a three-year absence following their victory over Derby County! Villa broke the deadlock one minute before half time when El Ghazi nodded Elmohamady’s cross from the right into the bottom left corner. 14 minutes after the break, Villa doubled their lead when McGinn capitalised on Roos’ error before heading the ball into the open net from close range. Derby started to find their feet after Marriott and Waghorn came on before the two combined on 81 minutes to pull one back for Lampard’s side, but Villa held on in the final minutes to secure promotion to the Premier League.
ASTON VILLA ARE PROMOTED TO THE PREMIER LEAGUE!

90' + 5' Wilson’s ball into the area from the left-hand side is powerfully headed to safety by Hause with four Derby players lurking in the penalty area.

85' This is only the sixth second-tier play-off final between the teams finishing 5th and 6th in the Championship and the first since 2005.
83' Mings is down and in need of treatment following his last-ditch tackle on Waghorn. Hause has gone to warm up with the defender still down.

Goal
81' Goal Jack Marriott
80' Derby are piling on the pressure now. Following a corner to the left, the ball ricochets around the area with nobody able to claim it before Bogle eventually drives wide with an ambitious right-footed strike.
78' OVER! Waghorn gets away down the left and his cross deflects into the path of Wilson, but the Welshman lashes his left-footed effort well over the top of Steer’s goal from the centre of the box.
77' El Ghazi breaks at real pace on the counter through the centre of the field before laying the ball off to his left for Grealish. Instead of going for goal, Grealish looks to return the ball to El Ghazi on the edge of the box, but Johnson gets back to make the tackle and regain possession for Derby.
76' CLOSE! Lampard’s side are looking on top following the substitutions. Following a corner from the left, Villa fail to clear their lines and the ball drops to Marriott in the centre of the box who sees his acrobatic left-footed effort go marginally wide of the far post.
75' The team finishing sixth in the Championship have been promoted via the play-offs in just one of the last 13 seasons. Can Derby, who of course finished sixth, find a way back into the game in the final 15 minutes?
F. Jozefzoon
T. Lawrence
73' Derby make their final change of the game as Lawrence, who has been struggling with an injury, is replaced by Jozefzoon. It remains 2-0.
A. Green
A. Adomah
73' Villa make their first substitution of the match as Adomah comes off and is replaced by Green.
71' JUST WIDE! Mount slides the ball in down the right wing for Bogle who skips inside of El Ghazi before striking across the ball in looking to fire it in at the near post from an acute angle, but the effort just fizzes wide.
70' In acres of space down the left side of the field, El Ghazi’s right-footed effort form outside the box is tame, and Roos easily collects it at his near post.
M. Waghorn
M. Bennett
69' Derby make their second change of the match as Bennett is replaced by Waghorn with just over 20 minutes left to play.
68' Wilson drives forward down the left with real intent, but loses his footing and Villa regain possession of the ball.
67' The last Championship play-off final to see both sides score was West Ham’s 2-1 win over Blackpool back in 2012. Will Marriott help to spark a Derby comeback?
65' CLOSE! After being played in by McGinn, Grealish looks to bend the ball inside the near post from the edge of the box, but his effort is just dragged wide to the right of Roos’ goal.
64' There is going to be another brief pause in play as Mings is down and in need of medical attention. The defender is now back to his feet and able to continue.
J. Marriott
T. Huddlestone
63' Derby make their first change of the game as Huddlestone is replaced by Marriott as Lampard’s side look to find a route back into the match.
62' As things stand, Aston Villa are less than 30 minutes away from being promoted to the Premier League.
60' There is going to be a brief stoppage in play as Mount is down and in need of treatment. The midfielder is back to his feet and appears to be fine to continue.
J. McGinn
Goal
59' GOAL! McGinn doubles Villa’s lead! El Ghazi cuts inside of Bogle before seeing his shot deflected high into the air and towards the centre of the box. Roos comes out to claim the looping ball but gets it all wrong as McGinn nips in to nod it into the open goal. 2-0.
58' Abraham gets played in down the right by Grealish, but Tomori gets back to make an excellent sliding tackle to disposes the Villa striker just inside the penalty area.

54' Hourihane, with his left foot, curls the free-kick into the box and Roos manages to get something on it to send it out for a throw-in to the right.
53' Villa are coming forward with real intent at the moment as they look to pile the pressure on Derby. Bogle clips El Ghazi down the left flank and Villa are awarded another free-kick.
F. Tomori
Yellow Card
51' After a quick one-two with Abraham, Tomori blocks off the run of McGinn and the Derby defender is the latest player in quick succession to receive a yellow card.
50' Grealish is fouled by Huddlestone which leads to a scuffle between the two players, but the referee opts to keep his cards in his pocket on this occasion and just give both players a talking to. It has been a feisty start to the second half.
C. Hourihane
Yellow Card
48' Wilson lets the ball run across his body and is cynically brought to the ground by Hourihane who goes into the book. The Villa midfielder can have no complaints about that one.
M. Bennett
Yellow Card
47' Abraham skips away from Huddlestone before being fouled from behind by Bennett who receives a yellow card. Villa wanted to play on with El Ghazi free over to the left, but Tierney pulled the game back for the foul on Abraham.
46' We are back underway! Derby get the second half kicked off.
Despite being ahead, Villa will be disappointed with their overall performance in the first half and will seek to improve after the restart. Grealish and Abraham have been very quiet thus far and Smith will look to his star players to step up in the second half in their efforts to extend their lead. Derby, meanwhile, will also look to improve on their performance in the second half. Mount and Wilson have struggled to get into the game and Lampard will expect more from those two, along with Bennett and Lawrence, after the break as the Rams look to get back into the game.
After a highly competitive opening half of football, Aston Villa lead at the break. Smith’s side started strongly and were on the front foot from the off with Grealish firing just wide of Roos’ goal after only seven minutes. Derby grew into the game as the half went on before Mount’s drive from distance called Steer into action after 37 minutes, but the Villa goalkeeper had no difficulties in making the save. With only one minute left to play in the half, El Ghazi headed Elmohamady’s cross from the right into the bottom left corner of the net to ensure that Villa went in ahead at the break.

45' There will be one added minute at the end of the first half.

31' Under pressure from Bennett, Steer slices his clearance out from a throw-in. The pressing from Bennett is met with a loud cheer from the Derby fans.
29' Wilson takes the free-kick and looks to swing it in towards the far post, but the delivery is overhit and it runs behind for a goal kick.

Yellow Card
28' Bogle skips away from El Ghazi down the right-hand side and the Villa winger is shown the first yellow card of the match for pulling the Derby defender’s shirt.

25' Lawrence attempts to slide in Bogle down the right flank, but El Ghazi tracked the defender all the way to regain possession for Villa.
23' Bennett’s header lands perfectly at the feet of Lawrence who looks to try his luck from distance, but Hourihane got back to make an excellent tackle to send the effort behind for a goal kick following a deflection.

12' Bennett steers the ball into the area from the right wing and Johnson looks to leave the low cross for a team-mate, but there was nobody coming in behind him and Villa hook the ball to safety.
11' Mings cynically pushes Bennett to the floor from behind on the halfway line and Derby win a free-kick.
9' Wilson wins a free-kick to the right after being fouled by Grealish. Mount’s delivery is flicked on at the far post by Johnson and then helped on again by Keogh before Tomori is penalised for a high boot in the centre of the box.
7' CLOSE! Roos’ poor clearance drops right to McGinn who sharply lays the ball off to his left for Grealish. The midfielder cuts inside before drilling a right-footed effort just wide of the goal from the edge of the box.
6' Following a free-kick which is won by Mings, El Ghazi’s cross is deflected behind for a corner to the left off Bogle. Grealish’s delivery into the box drops right to the feet of Tuanzebe, but he just can’t quite get it under control and Derby scramble it clear.
4' Huddlestone clips McGinn from behind in the centre of the pitch and Villa are awarded a free-kick. The set-piece is taken quickly over to the left where El Ghazi is brought down by Bogle and Smith’s side win another free-kick.

1' Kick-off! The referee, Paul Tierney, blows his whistle and Aston Villa get the Championship play-off final underway.
The teams are out and kick-off will soon be upon us here at Wembley.
Aston Villa have won six of their last nine matches against Derby.
Aston Villa have been on a fine run of form of late losing only twice in their previous 12 matches. Dean Smith’s side will be full of confidence for this game having beaten Derby by an aggregate scoreline of 7-0 in their two Championship meetings this season. In reaching this year’s final, Aston Villa are the first team to reach back-to-back play-off finals in the second tier since West Ham in 2004 and 2005. Derby, on the other hand, are also enjoying a good spell of form having also only lost twice in their last 12 matches. Should Lampard’s team secure promotion today, their tally of 74 points would be the fewest by a side to get promoted to the Premier League since Crystal Palace in 2012-13 who managed 72 points.
Following their semi-final victory over West Bromwich Albion, Smith makes one change to his Villa side with Adomah coming into the attack in place of Green who drops to the bench. Derby, on the other hand, are forced into making two changes from their semi-final side. Scott Malone is suspended for today’s game having been sent off against Leeds with Lampard opting for Cole as his replacement, whilst Duane Holmes misses out through injury as Huddlestone comes in to replace him.
