Juventus 1-1 Inter (8-9 on penalties): Carrizo the hero in sudden death

The Nerazzurri put their embarrassing 4-0 defeat to Valencia behind them to finish seventh in the International Champions Cup courtesy of Ricky Alvarez and the Argentine goalkeeper

Inter goalkeeper Juan Carrizo was the hero for Walter Mazzarri's side as he not only saved Juventus midfielder Mauricio Isla's spotkick, but converted one of his own in a thrilling 9-8 penalty shootout victory following a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes in the International Champions Cup.

The result means the Nerazzurri finished seventh in the pre-season tournament, avoiding last place which went to their opponents in this match.

Inter opened the scoring midway through the first half through Ricky Alvarez before the Bianconeri equalised courtesy of Arturo Vidal from the penalty spot following Juan Jesus' amateurish trip on Mirko Vucinic in the box.

The two sides could not be separated during the 90 minutes in a largely tedious affair with both sides displaying fatigue, resulting from the heat and humidity at the Sun Life stadium in Miami. The encounter was decided on penalties with Carrizo being the man of the moment.

Juventus' Sebastian Giovinco saw his penalty saved as did Fredy Guarin, before a long streak of conversions from Claudio Marchisio, Andrea Ranocchia, Fernando Llorente, Alvarez, Andrea Pirlo, Mauro Icardi (with a panenka), Vidal, Ishak Belfodil, Angelo Ogbonna, Parick Olsen, Martin Caceres, Marco Andreolli, Giorgio Chiellini, Alvaro Pereira, Paolo De Cegile and Jonathan.

But Carrizo's moment to shine eventually came as the substitute finally made his second stop in the shootout, on Isla. The Argentine then stepped up to take a penalty of his own, and beat Marco Storari to salvage seventh place for Inter.

The pre-season tournament ends on Wednesday with Jose Mourinho's Chelsea coming up against the club he left this summer, Real Madrid in the final.
