Bafana Bafana, twice, <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/lists/orlando-pirates-players-saved-bafana-bafana-again-hugo-broos-should-stop-calling-siyabonga-ngezana-south-africa-need-mamelodi-sundowns-players-mothobi-mvala-and-grant-kekana-fans/bltb4eebe6202fd1932" target="_blank">scored late goals</a> in their recent Group K's Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Uganda and South Sudan, respectively.Orlando Pirates midfielder Thalente Mbatha scored the back-to-back late goals to salvage a point in a 2-2 draw against the Cranes and <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/lists/oswin-appollis-and-thalente-mbatha-on-target-as-bafana-bafana-down-south-sudan-in-africa-cup-of-nations-qualifier/blta56bb7ba025dd982#cs221f1e6540c82e80" target="_blank">three points in a 3-2 victory away to the Bright Stars</a> in Juba.Coach Hugo Broos has now explained why his team struggled to deliver against what looked like an easy opponent.

WHAT HAPPENED?

"[Bafana] don’t have enough sharpness in our game because of the lack of competitive games. 80% of my team of 23 players only played friendly games because the [Premier Soccer League] didn’t start in South Africa," the 72-year-old explained."So when we play Uganda and South Sudan, who are very aggressive, very dedicated on the field, you have to be as sharp as they are, and that’s not the case at the moment for South Africa."Next weekend the competition begins in South Africa, and in October we will be sharper. It was my fear for these two games, I saw South Sudan and Uganda, and it was a fear we had a lack of sharpness and yeah it was like that," Broos added."We’re lucky that the good Lord was with us in those two games, that we scored in the 94th and today in the 95th minute."

WHAT BROOS SAID

Paul Put's Cranes are currently top of Group K, after two games, with four points, the same as Bafana Bafana who have an inferior goal difference. Uganda claimed a 2-0 win over Congo in their second game.The Red Devils are third in the pool with three points, thanks to their hard-fought 1-0 win over South Sudan.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Broos hopes to get vital points in the next international break when South Africa will be playing Congo home and away.The two top teams in every group will qualify for the 2025 Afcon to be held in Morocco and Bafana Bafana will not want to miss the biennial competition after finishing third in the most recent edition.&nbsp;
