Kevin Muscat's two stars showed why he signed them

Melbourne Victory claimed a tight 2-1 win over Sydney FC on Sunday with star imports Ola Toivonen and Keisuke Honda getting on the score sheet for Kevin Muscat's side.

Sydney FC's key signing Adam Le Fondre also bagged himself another goal but it wasn't all smooth sailing for both teams across the pitch.

Check out our Big Blue player ratings below.

  • Andrew Redmayne

    Andrew Redmayne

    Rating: 6/10

Helpless for both goals but otherwise commanded his penalty box well.

  • Michael Zullo Sydney FC

    Michael Zullo

    Rating: 7/10

Effective as always down the left and offered the Sky Blues a solid outlet moving forward.

  • Jop van der Linden

    Jop van der Linden

    Rating: 3/10

A nightmare game for the Dutchman, whose deflection led to Victory's opener before he gave away an unnecessary penalty in the second-half.

  • Alex Wilkinson Sydney FC

    Alex Wilkinson

    Rating: 6/10

A lot less erratic than his centre-back partner and made his presence known in defence.

  • Rhyan Grant Sydney FC

    Rhyan Grant

    Rating: 5/10

Fresh from his Socceroos debut mid-week, the right-back looked a bit too hot-headed as he picked up a yellow card and was caught out of position a number of times.

  • Brandon O'Neill Sydney FC

    Brandon O'Neill

    Rating: 7/10

Offered some brilliant distribution for the Sky Blues and was always where he needed to be.

  • Josh Brillante Sydney FC

    Josh Brillante

    Rating: 6/10

Didn't stand out as much as O'Neill, but didn't do much wrong either.

  • Milos Ninkovic

    Milos Ninkovic

    Rating: 6/10

A quiet game from the Sydney FC star who never really got going.

  • Paulo Retre

    Paulo Retre

    Rating: 7/10

Looking better and better down the right for the Sky Blues and got himself in the right position to win the first-half penalty.

  • Alex Brosque Sydney FC

    Alex Brosque

    Rating: 7/10

Solid as always from the skipper, who wasn't quite as sharp with the ball at his feet as he often can be.

  • Adam Le Fondre Sydney FC

    Adam Le Fondre

    Rating: 7/10

Lively performance from the striker and another goal to his tally. Had his penalty saved initially but was aware and quick enough to tuck home the rebound.

    Daniel De Silva: N/A

    Charles Lokoli-Ngoy: N/A

    Aaron Calver: 7/10

  • Lawrence Thomas

    Lawrence Thomas

    Rating: 7/10

Stopped the initial penalty from Le Fondre but was helpless trying to stop the follow-up effort. Brave as always in coming out and defused a number of high balls from Sydney FC.

  • Corey Brown

    Corey Brown

    Rating: 6/10

A solid if not spectacular performance from the left-back who struggled at times to contain Retre.

  • Georg Niedermeier

    Georg Niedermeier

    Rating: 7/10

A strong showing from the German, whose height and physicality made the Victory back line hard to breakdown for the Sky Blues.

  • Thomas Deng

    Thomas Deng

    Rating: 6/10

A mixed performance from the Socceroos defender. A few strong tackles, but still shows glimpes of inexperience.

  • Storm Roux

    Storm Roux

    Rating: 7/10

Did well to keep Ninkovic so quiet while still getting forward when needed.

  • Carl Valeri

    Carl Valeri

    Rating: 6/10

A performance you'd expect from the veteran. No thrills but did what he had to to keep everything together in the middle.

  • Melbourne Victory Terry Antonis

    Terry Antonis

    Rating: 5/10

The villain turned hero last time these teams met was in the thick of the action again as he gave away an admittedly questionable penalty in the first-half. Was withdrawn on the hour mark after an otherwise tired performance.

  • Keisuke Honda

    Keisuke Honda

    Rating: 7/10

Won and tucked home the winning penalty, but by no means his best performance for Victory. A few uncharacteristically heavy passes from the Japanese star.

  • James Troisi

    James Troisi

    Rating: 7/10

Another lively showing from the fringe Socceroo, who created the first goal with a great run and pass across goal. Looks determined to have more of an impact in the final third this season.

  • Melbourne Victory Kosta Barbarouses

    Kosta Barbarouses

    Rating: 6/10

A fairly subdued performance from the winger-turned-striker. Had an early effort from distance saved comfortably by Redmayne.

  • Ola Toivonen Melbourne Victory

    Ola Toivonen

    Rating: 8/10

A goal in his starting debut and though rather fortunate, there's no luck about how the Swede reads the game. Still not fully fit by the looks of if but still got himself into all the right areas.

  • Melbourne Victory subs

    Raul Baena: 7/10

    Nick Ansell: N/A
