Kansas City Current's Temwa Chawinga breaks NWSL single-season scoring record

WHAT HAPPENED?

Over the weekend, Kansas City Current forward Temwa Chawinga scored her 19th goal of the season, breaking Sam Kerr's record of the most goals in a single NWSL season.

Kerr's record was 18 goals in 2019, when she played for the Chicago Red Stars. Chawinga's goal came in the 35th minute, and propelled the Current to a 1-0 win over Bay FC on the road.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

This is Chawinga's first season in the NWSL, and she has already established herself in the league's record books.

With the victory against Bay FC, the Current earned their first-ever home playoff match in the 2024 NWSL Postseason.

The Current sits in fourth place in the league standings with an overall record of 14-3-7.

WHAT THE CURRENT ARE SAYING

"At this point, everyone is focused on one thing, winning the next game. But also, now that we know we’re hosting the first playoff game, [we’re focused] on winning the first game in the playoffs as well. When there is a target, when there is a goal ahead, when there is a purpose behind what we’re doing, it’s a little bit easier for the team to bond and get more cohesive," Vlatko said in a post-game press release.

WHAT'S NEXT?

The Current play their final game of the 2024 season next weekend against San Diego Wave.
