Another serious injury? Bayern Munich worried about Giulia Gwinn

Early jubilation gave way to a late scare. With only a few minutes left in the Women's Bundesliga top clash, Giulia Gwinn limped off with what looked like a serious injury. Bayern Munich's narrow 1-0 (1-0) win at Eintracht Frankfurt almost became secondary afterwards, with concern for the captain taking over.

Gwinn is facing a lengthy spell out with an injury to her left ankle. At the very least, she now appears set to miss the two internationals on Friday evening (8.30pm) in Karlsruhe against Australia and on 13 October in Bremen against Japan for the time being. Examinations on Sunday were expected to provide precise findings.

Repeated serious injuries to both knees have already disrupted Gwinn's career, along with a shoulder injury most recently. She twisted her ankle in a sprint duel and stayed down on the turf. After initial treatment, she limped off, and her left ankle was then heavily strapped on the bench.

At least Bayern could still take satisfaction from the result. Their sixth win in six games moved them five points clear of closest challengers Frankfurt. "We are happy about every win. It is a nice feeling, it gives us confidence," said Klara Bühl, who scored the only goal in the 18th minute after a counter-attack in front of 5,750 fans at the sold-out Stadion am Brentanobad.

Concern for Giulia Gwinn after Bayern Munich win in top match

Bayern's Double winners have now gone 48 league games unbeaten. "We can be incredibly proud that we are winning the games one after another like this," said Bühl. Jose Barcala's team had recently looked vulnerable at times in the Champions League against Manchester City (2-2) and at Benfica (3-0), and above all in the DFB Cup at Borussia Mönchengladbach (2-1). Here, though, Bayern controlled the game for long spells. Frankfurt's attack, led by captain Laura Freigang, posed little threat.

Still, the concern over Gwinn remains after she underwent thorough examinations on Sunday. The Bayern and Germany captain had only just been working her way back to top form. In April, the 27-year-old dislocated her left shoulder in the international against Austria (5-1), and in May she underwent surgery as a result.

Earlier in her career, she had already come through cruciate ligament tears in her right and left knee (September 2020, October 2022), as well as a medial ligament tear in her left knee in the opening match of Euro 2025 in Switzerland.
