Saudi Al-Ahli sack Icelandic coach Thor Arnason

Saudi club Al-Ahli confirmed today, Tuesday, the sacking of Icelandic coach Thor Arnason from his role in charge of the women's team, a decision driven by a run of poor results in the current 2026/2027 Saudi Women's Premier League campaign.

Al-Ahli confirmed the decision on their official website, sacking Arnason after the women's team crashed to a 4-0 defeat at hosts Al-Ula in the sixth round of the 2026/2027 Saudi Women's Premier League. The result left them seventh, second from bottom, on 4 points.

Serbian coach Dragan Vukovic steps up to replace him. He had been in charge of the club's under-17 girls' team, taking 6 points from 3 matches this season to sit fourth in the 2026/2027 Saudi Premier League for under-17 girls.

Icelandic coach Thor Arnason took charge of Al-Ahli in the summer of 2026. He succeeded the Jordanian coach Manar Freij, who racked up a string of accomplishments with the team after first taking the post in 2022.

Under Freij, the Al-Ahli women's side won the Saudi Women's Federation Cup twice, in the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 editions. They also claimed second place and the silver medal in the Saudi Women's Premier League on three occasions, across the 2023/2024, 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 seasons.
