  • Russo was in flying form for Arsenal in December
  • Lionesses star collects two awards for her efforts
  • Gunners interim Slegers makes it a clean sweep
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Russo netted six goals in the Gunners' four games before the winter break, including three in their two WSL outings. After netting a double in the 4-0 win over Aston Villa, the striker then scored the only goal when Arsenal signed off from league action for 2024 with a victory at Liverpool which kept them in the Champions League places. That allowed Russo to beat out competition from Tottenham's Bethany England, West Ham forward Viviane Asseyi, Arsenal team-mate Steph Catley, Manchester United midfielder Dominique Janssen and Sara Holmgaard of Everton to be named WSL Player of the Month for December.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

That was one of two awards Russo picked up on Thursday, as she also won the Goal of the Month accolade for her second strike in the win over Villa. The England striker currently has six goals in 10 league games this term, as well as five in her 10 Champions League outings.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Russo wasn't the only one presented with an award at the Arsenal training ground on Thursday though, as interim coach Renee Slegers also collected the Manager of the Month prize after guiding the Gunners to two wins from two in the WSL in December. That helped extend the team's unbeaten run under the Dutchwoman to 11 games, with her yet to taste defeat since taking the reins from Jonas Eidevall in mid-October.

WHAT NEXT FOR RUSSO, SLEGERS AND ARSENAL?

Slegers remains in interim charge as Arsenal return to action following the winter break this weekend. The Gunners will host Championship side Bristol City in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday, their first fixture in this season's competition. Whether Slegers will be in charge beyond that, only time will tell, as Arsenal near a decision on the next permanent head coach. The 35-year-old has put forth a compelling case for the job though, winning 10 of her 11 games in charge.
