Why Lyle Lakay is desperate to win the PSL title with Mamelodi Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns left-back Lyle Lakay has explained why he is eager to win his maiden Premier Soccer League (PSL) winner's medal.

The 27-year-old player missed out on the most coveted trophy in the country years ago in his debut season.

Lakay was on the books of SuperSport United when they clinched the 2009/10 PSL title under the guidance of accomplished South African coach Gavin Hunt.

However, the league triumph eluded the left-footed player after moving on loan to National First Division (NFD) side FC Cape Town midway through the 2009/10 campaign.

Lakay secured a dream move to the defending league champions Sundowns from Cape Town City prior to the start of the current season.

“I want to win everything that is at stake but mainly the league. I missed out (in 2009/10 when SuperSport earned their third triumph on the trot)," Lakay told IOL

“I went on loan to FC Cape Town. Daine (Klate) hurt his collarbone in that season and Gavin (Hunt, then SuperSport coach) wanted me back as the cover for Masibusane Zongo," he continued.

"The coach at FC Cape Town, though, asked Hunt if he could keep me and he did. Otherwise, I could have gone back and I would have had a league medal by now. That's life, of course, but hopefully I can win one here with Sundowns," Lakay explained.

Lakay is pleased to have reunited with his former Bloemfontein Celtic and SuperSport teammates at Sundowns.

“Coming to the club, I don’t think it was that difficult. Everyone was so welcoming,” Laka is a left-winger by trade, but he has been used as a full-back by Sundowns head coach Pitso Mosimane.

“I'd also played with a lot of guys here before, Hlompo Kekana, Denis Onyango, Tebogo Langerman and Anthony Laffor, when I was still at SuperSport. I also played with Thapelo Morena at Bloemfontein Celtic," he concluded.

Lakay, who was nurtured in the SuperSport academy, has made eight appearances for Sundowns in all local competitions this season.

Sundowns will take on Lakay's former club, Celtic in a league game at the Dr Molemela Stadium on Wednesday.
