Despite trailing twice in their round 21 Malaysia Super League match against Selangor on Saturday, Melaka United kept their cool to come from behind and record a 3-2 win at the Hang Jebat Stadium.

Ilham Udin Armaiyn opened the scoring for the visitors in the 25th minute, but Yahor Zubovich levelled the score five minutes into the second half. Substitute Kugan Dhevarajan helped Selangor retake the lead with his first touch in the 70th minute, but their poor defending allowed Zubovich to head home another equaliser from a set piece, in the 83rd minute. Selangor needed only one point from their three remaining league matches to secure top-tier safety, but Nicholas Swirad denied their chances of doing so in Saturday's match, when he nodded in the winner in the dying moments of the match.

The win was the Mousedeers' fourth straight match without a defeat, a marked improvement for them since head coach Elavarasan Elangowan took over in May.

When asked on his charges' progress by the match broadcaster's co-commentator Robert Cornthwaite, Elavarasan explained that his players have been gaining confidence from their previous matches.

"We've played some tough games; against Perak and Pahang for example, whereby people expected us to not perform well, and these matches helped the players build up their confidence slowly for the coming matches.

"And they used that confidence in the match (agaonst Selangor); they realised that they were not keeping up with the pace, they were too slow, the deliveries weren't there, so they came out better for the second half. The changes made helped the team work harder, and so did the confidence.

"Now we'll be heading into the Malaysia Cup which is a different sort of competition, so I hope whatever they have been doing in the last few games will help us take part with more confidence," remarked the coach to the former Australia international.
