Amakhosi may be on the lookout for revenge as they take on Matsatsantsa in Tshwane

Kaizer Chiefs will aim to give their hopes of silverware a major boost when they take on SuperSport United on Sunday afternoon in the first leg of their MTN8 semi-final.

Despite making several new changes to personnel, Amakhosi’s fortunes are yet to change, but the MTN8 offers Chiefs the ideal opportunity to get their season up and running.

Chiefs have only won one game this season which coincidentally was the clash that set up a date with the reigning champions, and they will look use that as motivation going into the clash.

On the other end, SuperSport looked to have put their past misfortunes aside and have been in scintillating form.

After overcoming one Soweto giant in Orlando Pirates, Matsatsantsa will look to claim another scalp on the road to potentially defending their crown.

Squads & Team News

Position Missing players
Goalkeepers Virgil Vries
Defenders Mario Booysen
Midfielders George Maluleka (injured), Joseph Molangoane (injured), Dax (work permit), Lebogang Manyama

The Tshwane-based outfit will rely on their talismanic forward Evans Rusike and James Keene for goals.

Rusike in particular, has been in impressive form having opened his account already in the competition.

Meanwhile, SuperSport head coach Kaitano Tembo has the unenviable task of balancing the club's Premier Soccer League (PSL) priorities with MTN8 commitments.

With Tembo having previously suggested that focus would be on the Chippa United game in midweek, Tembo is likely to rotate his aging squad in Tshwane.

On the side of the home side, Chiefs may be struggling in the league, but they continue to raid the transfer market for new talent. The Glamour Boys recently brought on board both Lebogang Manyama and Mario Booysen.

However, coach Giovanni Solinas has confirmed that the duo are unlikely to make their debut in the Cup. The pair will join the likes of Joseph Molangoane, who is side-lined with a long-term injury and George Maluleka, who is is not yet fit.

Chiefs fans will also need to wait a bit longer to get their first look at Madagascar international ‘Dax’ is reportedly still awaiting his work permit.

Nonetheless, Solinas will be counting on the chemistry between Leonardo Castro and Khama Billiat to hold them in good stead up front.

Match Preview

This will be the 35th meeting between the two sides and perhaps the most tightly contested yet if history is taken into consideration. Both teams have won 13 games, with eight games ending in draws.

But SuperSport are perhaps the form team heading into the game. The reigning champions have won four of their last five games, which is heavily contrasting to Chiefs’ fortunes which has seen them win just one of their last five.

Revenge though, may be in the air as Chiefs will still be hurting from their previous MTN8 defeat against SuperSport, where they were edged out 1-0 in last year’s competition.
