The South African Football Association (Safa) has handed Banyana Banyana a checque of over R2.4 million for their efforts in the recently concluded African Women's Cup of Nations (Awcon).
Banyana finished second behind eventual champions Nigeria, who won the trophy for a record ninth-time on Sunday.
According to the country's FA, the bonus structure was drawn with the players way before the tournament started.
Safa, who reported an R18 million loss for the year 2018, said this was achieved with the help of main sponsor Sasol, the South African governement as well as the National Lottery.
It has been confirmed that the money will be shared among the 21 players who took part in the tournament in Ghana.
Safa released the following statement:
Upon their arrival on Sunday from Ghana where they finished as runners-up and qualified for the Fifa Women’s World Cup, Safa handed over Banyana Banyana their promised cheque incentives amounting to over R2,4 million which they will share among themselves.
Safa met with the players before they departed for the 2018 Women’s Afcon and confirmed a bonus structure for the players.
Safa was supported in this commitment by sponsors Sasol.
The bonus structure was drawn up with the players long before they left for Ghana and with the help of the sponsors and the government through Lotto, the bonus incentives were agreed by all parties.
The bonuses paid, amounting to R2 415 000,00 will be shared exclusively by the 21 players who participated at the Women’s Afcon 2018.
The cheque was handed over to captain, Janine van Wyk upon the team's arrival on Sunday.
