Mamelodi Sundowns legend Roger Feutmba believes the loss to Wydad Casablanca on Saturday is not a train smash because they have the quality to bounce back.
Despite their 1-0 in their final Caf Champions League Group A match in Rabat, the Brazilians qualified for the quarter-finals as runners-up.
“I believe they had a good game even though they didn’t win yesterday. I mean they have qualified for the quarter-finals and it is good for the team, country and the supporters,” Feutmba told Goal.
“I believe they have what it takes to go all the way. There were confidence against Wydad. This is a massive achievement for the entire Sundowns family and finishing second is not really bad in my opinion. I know the coach (Pitso Mosimane) wanted to top the group, but they just have to prepare well now,” reacted the legend.
With Sundowns facing a possibility of meeting the likes of Al Ahly, Esperance de Tunis and TP Mazembe as the tournament progresses, the Cameroonian legend says the Brazilians are feared on the continent.
“I agree there will be tough teams in the next stage because it is the knockout round, but Sundowns are also a team to beat because they are experienced. They are former champions and a growing team in Africa,” he added.
“They are fully aware that when you reach the quarter-finals you will meet top quality sides. They are experienced having been there in 2016, they went on to win it and they must use that experience,” said Feutmba.
“The only mission for the coach is to keep his players in good shape, focused and keep their winning record at home intact because that will also play a big part in the next stage,” he responded.
Touching on the PSL title race, ‘The General’ insists the league is for the defending champions Sundowns to lose.
“Even though the league is tight, Sundowns are still contenders and we talked about this even before the start of the of the season,” said the legend.
“I cannot say they must choose one tournament over the other, but we Sundowns is a big team and the supporters want every trophy,” he noted.
“The only thing is to win their games, forget about who is chasing the title, they are on top and they just have to give that final push and go all the way to defend it,” he concluded.
