Pollen Ndlanya: Billiat must be given freedom at Kaizer Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs legend Pollen Ndlanya reckons the signing of Mamelodi Sundowns striker Khama Billiat will go a long way in helping Amakhosi.

The former striker believes that the player’s arrival is long overdue and said the new coach must give the Zimbabwean a free role in their attack.

Billiat joined Chiefs last week together with Madgascar’s Andriamirado Andrianarimanana, Lehlohonolo Mirwa and goalkeeper Virgil Vries who was unveiled this week.

Set to don the famous number 11 jersey worn previously by the likes of Teenage Dladla and Jabu Mahlangu, Billiat will be expected to turn the club’s fortunes around.

With the Soweto giants having failed to lift a trophy in the past three seasons under former coach Steve Komphela, the 2018 Cosafa Cup winner is expected to hit the ground running to bring back glory to the Glamour Boys family.

A look at his Brazilians career, the former Ajax Cape Town player has bagged three Premier Soccer League (PSL) titles and mosrt notably, the 2016 Caf Champions League title.

On the other hand, Billiat could revive the partnership witch he formed with Colombia’s Leonardo Castro during the duo's time with Sundowns together with Keagan Dolly as they were known as the deadly ‘CBD’.

"Give him a free role," Ndlanya told the SowetanLive.

"To have a player like Khama is a blessing, because you can play him all over," he said.

"But if I was the coach, I would give him the freedom and not restrict him," continued the former Manning Rangers striker.

"Chiefs have a lot of supporters and, once he plays those one-twos or take a shot at goal, the supporters will be behind him," Ndlanya concluded.

In his overall statistics, the former Caps United attacker banged in 68 goals in 206 appearances and if he manages to bring his deft first touch, eye for goal and an ability to pick out a teammate with a clever pass, he will definitely be Amakhosi’s saviour.

However, because of injuries Billiat provided just eight assists and scored nine times out of 21 appearances in the 2017/18 PSL season.

Meanwhile, the 27-year-old could face his former teammates in the Shell Helix Cup on July 21 at the FNB Stadium as they prepare for the 2018/19 PSL term.
