Oxlade-Chamberlain to miss World Cup as Liverpool confirm knee ligament injury

Liverpool have announced that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will miss the 2018 World Cup with a knee ligament injury.

The England midfielder suffered the injury in Liverpool's 5-2 Champions League win over Roma on Tuesday.

"The extent of the injury means Oxlade-Chamberlain is set to miss the remainder of the campaign for Liverpool, as well as the World Cup finals in Russia with England," a statement from Liverpool read.

The news is a bitter blow for the 24-year-old, who was enjoying a strong second half of the season with the Reds.

In addition to the World Cup, Oxlade-Chamberlain will also miss the rest of Liverpool's season, which includes the second leg of the Champions League semi-final next week in Rome, as well as a potential final on May 26.

After just 18 minutes of Tuesday's match Oxlade-Chamberlain was forced off after catching his knee on the pitch while attempting a sliding challenge.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admitted the injury did not look good after the game, telling BT Sport : "Oxlade-Chamberlain's is probably a really bad injury."

On Wednesday, the Reds did not confirm how long the midfielder is expected to be out for, only saying "no specific timescale is being placed upon his return to action at this stage."

After the injury was confirmed, Oxlade-Chamberlain took to Twitter to say he was "absolutely devastated" to be missing out for club and country.

"Absolutely devastated to have picked up this injury at such a crucial time in the season," he wrote.

"Gutted I won't be able to play any further part now in our Champions League run for Liverpool, and also the World Cup with England. But now it's all about supporting the boys and getting behind them."

Oxlade-Chamberlain started both of England's March friendlies against Netherlands and Italy, and was in line for a role with Gareth Southgate's side in Russia this summer.
