Orlando Pirates goals problem not just down to strikers, says Milutin Sredojevic

Orlando Pirates coach Milutin Sredojevic admits their strikers find it hard to score goals regularly because of the tightly marked defences they come up against every time.

“It’s difficult for the strikers to score because the defenses are tight and put pressure on them. But we need to understand that the firepower of scoring needs to come from all over the pitch. Not just the strikers,” Sredojevic told the media.

They were held to a goalless draw by Caf Confederation Cup finalists SuperSport United at the Orlando Stadium, a game where both sides squandered numerous chances to seal the three points.

The Serbian admits the league now is way more competitive than it was during his first stint a decade ago.

“The PSL is much more organised now from when I was here a decade ago. And the teams are working better and competing more,” Sredojevic said.

Bucs are motivated to do well this season following last term’s dreadful campaign that saw them finish outside the top eight for the first time in the PSL era.

Notwithstanding they conceded 10 goals, six in 45 minutes while four in the Nedbank Cup final against the self-same United last season.

“We have been motivated to prove that we are competitive this year so I commend the players. This game last year we conceded 6 in 45 minutes and 10 goals in 2 games against them,” Sredojevic said.
