Football Kenya Federation have officially written to KPL and both clubs to notify the cancellation of Saturday derby

Football Kenya Federation have officially confirmed the postponement of AFC Leopards v Gor Mahia Kenyan Premier League derby.

The match was scheduled for Saturday at Bukhungu Stadium but according to a statement from FKF signed by CEO Robert Muthomi and obtained by Goal, the tie has been called off to a later date.

“The national team is assigned to honour friendly matches against Swaziland on May 25 and Equatorial Guinea on May 28.

“As such the derby between AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia scheduled for this Saturday has been postponed to a later date. Football Kenya Federation will work to see that the match has been scheduled at the earliest opportune time.”

On Monday, AFC Leopards, who are the home team, released a statement to insists that the derby will go on as scheduled.

“We shall not release our players for Harambee Stars friendlies due to the match and Super Cup to start on June 2, 2018. We condemn in the strongest terms possible the statement attributed to FKF President that the derby will not be played in a 'Funny stadium’.

“We are going ahead with preparations and we shall not participate in “Funny Friendlies’ which do not fall under Fifa calendar for national teams.”

Goal understands Gor Mahia players have already reported to Harambee Stars training camp ahead of the two friendly matches.
