Orlando Pirates striker Eethe Khaukanani has attracted interest from Newly promoted National First Division (NFD) outfit Maccabi FC.

The Balfour Park-based side secured promotion to the second tier of South African football after winning the 2017/18 NFD promotional playoffs in June, 2018.

Maccabi, who are under the guidance of former Kaizer Chiefs defender Mokete Tsotetsi as their head coach, qualified for the play-offs as 2017/18 Gauteng ABC Motsepe League champions.

They are now looking to reinforce their squad with players, who have Premier Soccer League (PSL) and NFD experience ahead of the 2018/19 season.

Maccabi have identified Khaukanani as a target according to an impeccable source, who is close to both Pirates and the player.

“Yes, Maccabi have registered their interest in Eethe. But they want to assess the player, before signing him on loan,” the source told Goal

“However, Pirates are unwilling to release Eethe to Maccabi because the player could sustain an injury while on trial,” the source added.

Khaukanani, who joined Pirates from PSL side Free State Stars in 2016, spent some time in the NFD last season on loan at Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) FC.

However, the marksman left the Limpopo-based side midway through the campaign with the club reportedly struggling to pay him.

The Buccaneers are known to be looking to add Khaukanani to the club’s loan contingent in the NFD.

Pirates have already loaned out midfielder Reanetse Ramatlapeng and striker Thobela Sikhakhane to new NFD club TS Sporting, who lost to Maccabi in the promotional playoffs.

Witbank Spurs, who are also campaigning in the second tier, recently confirmed the signing of promising midfielder Siphumelele Mbulu from Bucs.

The Pirates academy product made his PSL debut during the Soweto giants’ 2-1 victory over Free State Stars at the Orlando Stadium in the final game of the 2017/18 season.
