The retired defender is confident that Abafana Bes'thende will avoid relegation

Ex- Golden Arrows defender Mzivukile Tom has backed his former club to go all the way to the Nedbank Cup final ahead of their Last 16 clash with  Witbank Spurs on Saturday afternoon.

“Yeah, I think they have a chance to win this one, but they just have to take it one game at a time. I like the fact that the coach (Steve Komphela) respects their opponents,” Tom told Goal.

“They have a good coach and I can tell you for the record that the club wanted Komphela a long time ago,” he explained.

“He is a good coach, capable of analyzing an opponent and he has good players who can play according to his style unlike in the past where we only had (Lerato) Lamola upfront to catch teams on counter attack leaving the rest of the team behind,” he noted.

Tom was part of the Arrows team that lifted the MTN8 Cup trophy under coach Manqoba Mngqithi during the 2009/10 season.

“I believe in players such as (Danny) Venter and the young (Seth) Parusnath, who comes from the development. He has done very well and he is grabbing his chance with both hands and they are doing well under Komphela,” he continued.

“We must know that Arrows are a small team not capable of challenging for the league. But they have to fight for trophies such as this one because it is very important,” he asserted.

“You know they cannot afford to operate on a big budget and buy players while challenging for the league, but they can develop players and I believe they that will not be relegated. They can now focus on winning this trophy,” he responded.

“I think the supporters are also hungry for a trophy and I am also disappointed with the fact that we sometimes exit in the first round of some cup tournaments,” noted the 36-year-old.

Arrows are currently placed 10th on the league standings - eight points above the relegation zone with 10 games left.

“Some of the coaches would just use fringe players in cup competitions and that doesn’t make sense to me because they must be using it as a chance to win something. I think they will not be relegated and they just have to focus on beating Spurs and challenging for this one,” he reacted.

“Arrows is one of the big clubs in KwaZulu-Natal and they cannot afford to be on the shadow of clubs such as AmaZulu and Maritzburg United,” concluded the retired defender.
