Muhsin Ertugral: South African players can learn from Benni McCarthy’s experience

The Turkish mentor will come up against the legendary Bafana Bafana marksman on Saturday afternoon

Ajax Cape Town coach Muhsin Ertugral didn’t hide his admiration for Cape Town City’s Benni McCarthy in Thursday’s press conference.

Ertugral will meet McCarthy for the first time as a coach in Saturday’s Cape Derby at the Cape Town Stadium.

The Bafana legend’s experience and knowledge gathered from his amazing career in Europe can be of great benefit to the PSL players, Ertugral said.

“Benni is a legend in South African football. The highest a footballer can achieve is to win the World Cup and the second is the Champions League,” Ertugral told the media.

“Benni has won the Champions League and that says it all. I have great respect for him, you cannot buy that type of experience. He is now looking to transform that to the field as a coach, and the players can learn a lot from his knowledge and experience,” McCarthy said.

The former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates coach said he is looking forward to the much-talked about Cape Derby.

“I think both teams are hungry for this, and when you have two offensive teams such as these, then it is always positive. I think, from a spectator point of view, it’s going to be a really exciting game,” he said.

Ivorian striker Yannick Zakri, who arrived on-loan from Mamelodi Sundowns, will not get the opportunity to feature as his paperwork is still being sorted.

“Zakri’s paperwork has still to be completed. He won’t be available for the derby or the next game against Free State Stars. Hopefully, he will be ready for the Orlando Pirates clash after that," Ertugral confirmed.
