Moroka Swallows will be relegated to Safa's Regional League should they drop points in their final match of the season against Orange Vaal Professional on Saturday.
The Dube Birds are currently place 15th on the log with, and with Garankuwa United putting two past Dondol Stars in Soshanguve on Wednesday, the former PSL giants will now depend on other results to go their way even if they win the match away from home.
They will need Garankuwa United to beat Vaal Professionals in the earlier kick-off and hope to collect all the points on offer in their match.
The Dube Birds were relegated from the Premier Soccer League (PSL) in May 2015, and although they had hopes of returning back to the elite league the following season, they found themselves at the bottom of the National First Division (NFD) log in May 2016.
A consortium led by Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi attempted to buy Free State Stars' top-flight status before the start of the current campaign.

However, the deal fell through on deadline day, and Swallows were forced to campaign in the ABC Motsepe League.
Meanwhile, Godfrey Gxowa, a long-serving official of the Swallows team, said there are plans in place to get the team back to where it belongs even if they were to be relegated to the fourth tier of South African football.
“There are a number of us who are saddened by what is happening to this club and we are willing to take over and start from scratch‚” Gxowa told The Sowetan.
“It is sad to see a club with 70 years of history go down because of people who came with the sole reason of making money and with no interests of the club at heart,” he concluded.
