Monare 'positive' Orlando Pirates will retain him as contract talks begin

  • Monare had been released by Pirates before they made a U-turn
  • Now his one-year contract is set to expire
  • He opens up about his future

WHAT HAPPENED? Pirates and Monare have entered into discussions about the central midfielder’s future. He had signed a one-year extension before the start of the just-ended term.

Initially, Pirates had offloaded him before the club reversed their decision on the 33-year-old midfielder who was being linked with Kaizer Chiefs. But he returned to Pirates where he is one of the most experienced players in their squad.

WHAT MONARE SAID: “We are still in talks with the club about my contract but I am positive I will be here next season, that’s what I can say for now,” Monare told Sowetan Live.

“I think I added value within the squad when needed. I really think I did well for the team. I can’t take away the fact that we are a team and individual goals are inessential compared to the team, so I am satisfied with what we delivered as a team.”

AND WHAT MORE? Monare describes it as a "misunderstanding" when Pirates announced he was leaving the club last season before the club made a U-turn.

“I always knew that I was going to stay. I always knew where I stood with the management, the relevant people. There was never a doubt...it was more of a misunderstanding I think. I never panicked.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE: While Monare's performances were impressive towards the end of last season, it could be difficult for coach Jose Rveiro to release him. He was a regular in a Pirates midfield where competition was stiff.

The likes of Ben Motshwari, Miguel Timm, Goodman Mosele, Ndabayithethwa and Makhehlene Makhaula were competing for places in the middle of the part in the Buccaneers squad.

Even with the possible arrival of midfielder Andile Jali, Monare's future at the Soweto giants appears to be secure. He was one of the Pirates captains and showed experience which Riveiro needs when they compete in the Champions League next season.

WHAT NEXT FOR MONARE? As talks have begun, Pirates could announce Monare's future in the next few days.
