Modise slams referee after Orlando Pirates beat Kaizer Chiefs

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Teko Modise was unimpressed by some of the decisions made by referee Luxolo Badi during Saturday afternoon's Soweto derby between Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.

The Sea Robbers ran out 2-1 winners, thanks to goals from Thembinkosi Lorch and substitute Siphelele Ndlovu. Chiefs meanwhile missed a penalty through captain Samir Nurkovic before Daniel Cardoso pulled a goal back for the Glamour Boys in the 85th minute.

Modise felt that Pirates were denied a clear penalty in the 70th minute after Njabulo Blom pulled back Vincent Pule in the box. At that point, Bucs were leading 1-0.

Replays certainly suggested that Blom was fortunate to escape without giving away a spot-kick.

"Pule turns the opponent, and now [Blom] comes from a different angle, he's pulling him down. Even if he didn't pull him down, his hands are all over Pule. So that's a clear penalty," Modise said in his capacity as a SuperSport TV analyst.

The former Bafana Bafana midfielder also felt that Badi did not handle the fall-out well - as several Bucs players came over to remonstrate, the match official brandished a succession of yellow cards to Lorch, Thabang Monare and Ben Motshwari.

Modise thought that Badi should rather have taken emotions into account. That's because while Bucs still managed to win the match, they went on to have several players yellow-carded which could prove costly in the weeks ahead.

"Also again it's what you do after that as a referee," Modise commented. "You have to take into account the magnitude of the derby itself. To players, to fans, management, it's an emotional game, its a very big game, it means a lot to all the people.

"Now after that (turning down the penalty appeal), with players being emotional, now you want to stamp your authority...if you had taken a simple decision (awarding the penalty) you could have avoided all of this.

"Now you want to issue out yellow cards to all those players. You've got Covid, you've got injuries, you've got all those important players who could be suspended for next week's game because of your mistakes."
