Toronto FC survives despite loss in wacky second leg against New York

Toronto FC has earned a spot in the Eastern Conference final despite falling 1-0 to the New York Red Bulls in the second leg of their Eastern Conference semifinal tie.

That's the good news for the Canadian outfit.

The bad news is that the club will head into the East final to face New York City FC or the Columbus Crew devoid of Jozy Altidore and Sebastian Giovinco

While Altidore was shown a red card at halftime, along with Red Bulls midfielder Sacha Kljestan , for a scuffle between the two in the tunnel, Giovinco picked up a booking late in the second half that will see him ruled out for the first leg of the next round.

Coming into Sunday's contest, Toronto held a 2-1 advantage after winning at Red Bull Arena

New York climed back level on aggregate thanks to a deflected Daniel Royer shot that found its way into the Toronto net off of Bradley Wright-Phillips early in the second half.

Wright-Phillips later nearly won the tie for the Red Bulls, but TFC goalkeeper Alexander Bono came up with a massive stop with the forward in alone.

Toronto twice had goals ruled out as well, first on a ball from Giovinco that looked to have been turned into the net by the Red Bulls and then on a free kick from Victor Vazquez that he took quickly, with the match official ruling that he hadn't allowed for play to continue.
