2018 is approaching quickly and with it the knowledge that World Cup squads will be decided soon.
Mexico's players don't have much time to make their case to manager Juan Carlos Osorio - and the Colombian tactician doesn't have much time to find alternative to players who may fall short of his ideal for the summer tournament.
Luckily for Osorio, Porto center back Diego Reyes is continuing to see minutes and even added a goal for the club this weekend. Reyes has by no means locked down a starting spot in Sergio Conceicao's squad (though his El Tri teammate Hector Herrera has), but getting more time and making the most of it is a big boost for the 25-year-old.
Forward Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez's spot on the Mexico squad isn't in danger, but he'll be eager to keep pushing for more minutes with West Ham United. He entered the Hammers' last two league matches - a scoreless draw with the Arsenal and a 3-0 win over Stoke City - as a substitute and was given the start in Tuesday's Carabao Cup contest against Arsenal but hasn't found the back of the net since his return from a hamstring injury suffered with the national team. West Ham's luck also ran out, with the team falling 1-0 to the Gunners and exiting from the competition.
Far from the national team, two Mexicans did battle for a crown in Guatemala. It was Agustin Herrera and Antigua GFC coming out on top of Carlos Kamiani's Municipal to lift the title in Guatemala. Both Mexicans started for their respective sides in the deciding leg Sunday, which Antigua won, 2-1, to lift its third title all-time.
