McCarthy: Komphela is still trying to find a good defensive pairing for Kaizer Chiefs

McCarthy tells Goal that Chiefs' defence acquitted themselves well during the first round of the current 2016/17 season

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Fabian McCarthy believes that coach Steve Komphela is still trying to find a consistent defensive pairing this season.

“Towards the end of the first round, the last few months from November to December, I think they did did well, but they can do better and improve,” McCarthy told Goal.

McCarthy has been particularly taken aback at how defender Lorenzo Gordinho, who is subject of a move to Europe at the moment, has done so far, while Sibusiso Khumalo at left back has also impressed.

“I must say that Gordinho boy is doing very well. I think he can also improve a lot. Look, Khumalo is obviously fitting in well there but you know injuries and red cards breaks his momentum.

“But he is fitting in well there. Rama (Ramahlwe Mphahlele) is also fitting in well. I mean he is a good player,” McCarthy said.

Following their first 15 games of the season, the Amakhosi has conceded 12 goals three more than they conceded at this time last season.

The continuous chopping and changing at the back is partly at fault for the defensive instability that inevitably leads to the conceding of goals.

“I think Steve is still looking to find a good pairing in the centre of defence. We have not seen the consistency yet because at times you have Gordinho and (Eric) Mathoho and (Daniel) Cardoso and Gordinho and Mathoho and Cardoso,” McCarthy concluded.
