Maritzburg United sign Yannick Zakri from Mamelodi Sundowns

The striker has joined the Team of Choice on a two-year deal and has been welcomed by the 2017/18 Nedbank Cup finalists

Maritzburg United have finally announced the signing of Mamelodi Sundowns striker Yannick Zakri, who joins the Team of Choice on a permanent deal.

The Cote d'Ivoire attacker was loaned out to Ajax Cape Town last season and returned to the reigning Premier Soccer League (PSL) champions at the end of the 2017/18 PSL term.

However, with the Brazilians having bought Lebohang Maboe from Maritzburg, Keletso Makgalwa and Zakri have gone in the opposite direction, with reports suggesting they were part of the deal.

Although the tricky attacker had already been spotted in the stands during Maritzburg's matches, chairman Farook Kadodia confirmed the signing on Monday.

“We are very happy to welcome Yannick to the club. He is an international with lots of experience and will add to our attacking options upfront,” said Kadodia on Monday.

“It was a bit of a challenge to bring a player from Sundowns to a club with limited resources. We had to be patient, get the support of Sundowns to make the transition happen. Boxing clever was important,” he added.

“Yannick was training with the team while the deal was being done. He was warmly received by the players and fitted in immediately,” continued the chairman.

“It is a great signing for us. We always look to target the best players for the job. It is an investment to the city and supporters of the Team of Choice,” concluded Kadodia.

Meanwhile, the former Asec Mimosas attacker could be unleashed when coach Fadlu Davids and his troops welcome Bidvest Wits on September 15 at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

In addition, Zakri's arrival is seen as a solution to Maritzburg's slow start to the season. They are yet to taste victory in four competitive matches this season.
