Mamelodi Sundowns star Sibusiso Vilakazi has not given up on hope that he can feature again this season.

The 28-year-old recently picked up an Achilles injury while on international duty, and the club have since confirmed that he will miss up to six months of football. This had led many to believe that ‘Vila’ will be ruled out for the rest of the campaign.

However, the attacker is making good strides in his recovery and is hopeful that he will return sooner than expected in order to help his side in their attempts to claim silverware.

“My recovery and rehabilitation are going well,” Vilakazi was quoted as saying by Daily Sun.

“We are taking it day by day, the little that you do with rehab makes a difference, so day by day there is rehab that’s happening, who knows, maybe the earliest can be next month,” he explained.

Meanwhile, in spite of the Bafana Bafana international’s absence, Sundowns were still able to record a comfortable victory away to Leones Vegetarianos in a first leg Caf Champions League preliminary round fixture.

The 2-0 win came courtesy of strikes by Jeremy Brockie and Themba Zwane, and puts the Tshwane giants in a good position heading into the return leg, and while Vilakazi may not be able to help his side on the field, he admits that is only refueling his motivation.

“At the moment, the only thing I can influence is my recovery, I can’t do anything about how my team does on the field,” he said.

“They are a huge motivation when I’m watching them, I can’t do much in terms of me being on the field but I can only help them by trying to get myself back into the game,” Vilakazi revealed.

Sundowns will now resume their Premier Soccer League (PSL) campaign with a clash on Sunday against cross-town rivals SuperSport United.
