Kaizer Chiefs head coach Steve Komphela has explained his decision to leave Siphiwe Tshabalala out of the squad for Saturday's Maize Cup tournament.

According to Komphela, Shabba is currently carrying a knock, but he hopes the veteran winger will be ready for the Soweto Dertby clash with Orlando Pirates on July 29.

Tshabalala enjoyed one of his best seasons during the 2016/17 campaign, and won several individual awards.

"Shabba is a great influence and has great experience and is among the supporters here [at the James Motlatsi Stadium]," Komphela told SuperSport TV.

"We are trying to get him ready but you know how it is - injuries sometimes take a while to heal and we are trying to nurse him," he added.

"So, by the 29th when we play the Carling Black Label Cup he should be ready because I'm sure these beautiful people are going to vote for him," he concluded.

In his absence, George Lebese featured on the left hand side of the Amakhosi midfield and scored the winner in the final against Free State Stars
